www.bonanza.org There is so much more available in Mexico than meets the eye! The depth and richness of the culture, geography, and destinations are almost overwhelming. Mexico is a large and varied country, so it has many nooks and crannies. Personal aviation is a fantastic platform for exploration. If you like to arrive at a destination resort and flop down for a week or two, have at it. There are perhaps a dozen or more world-class places like that, and many second-tier places that are very affordable with the same great weather and sea and local people. But if you have a more adventurous streak then you will be amazed at the possibilities. Mexico has a history Oaxaca Main Town Square that is far longer, and perhaps more turbulent than the USA, with a strong colonial influence including great history, traditions, architecture, and character. But let’s get specific and look at a few great places to visit in Mexico. All have excellent airport access for piston G.A., comparable with any Class Delta airport in the USA, and each airport has excellent 24/7 security with an admirable record of safety and security. Rental cars and all other “normal” services are readily available. While these locations are not necessarily household names in Monte Albán the USA, they are major destination attractions for many Mexicans. Oh, and the cost of personal aviation in Mexico is surprisingly modest, especially when compared with almost any other country outside the U.S. Geographically, much of the Mexican mainland is on a high plateau, with even higher mountains. It is all quite stunning – from the air and from the ground. Most airport runways are consequently quite long and more than adequate for the needs of ABS members. Climate varies a great deal, too, due to altitude, humidity from the Gulf of Mexico, the extreme dryness of the Baja, and tropical monsoons at certain times of year in some areas. Of course, this creates a fantastic array of flora and fauna. All of this wonder is best seen and experienced with our planes. This is partly due to the obvious bird’s eye view, but also because our planes traverse vast areas and hop over natural barriers to road travel with ease. In what we call the winter months, CAVU skies are the norm, with excellent ground temperatures to ease your cold northern-latitude bones without causing a swelter. 54 AMERICAN BONANZA SOCIETY MAY 2013
