HOW OUR MOTTO WAS ADOPTED : We
Serve was adopted at the 1954 International
Convention in New York as the winning entry
of a two year contest. “We Serve” was chosen
by the International Board of Directors after a
long and difficult process of judging more than
6000 suggestions from around the world. The
motto was proposed by eight Lions in the
United States, two in Canada and one in
Hawaii, with the prize given to th entry with the
earliest postmark . In his acceptance
message, winner Lion DA Stevenson of
Canada wrote “ I wish to emphasize that the
credit goes , first to our splendid, little, Fonthill,
Ontario, Lions Club, whose inspiring
example of devoted, selfless service to its
community gave me the motte “We Serve”
practically automatically. And Secondly, to
those same worldwide service activities of our
great body, Lions International.
Congratulations to DGE Mike Cousins on
receiving his green jacket. May he have
a rewarding year. Congratulations to
VDGE Robert Behrens on his election.
The 2nd International Vice President Al
Brandel visited our Convention. What a
dynamic person. He likes to be called Al
and likes to smooze (Meaning going
from person to person to get to know the
individual Lion) Al met all Lions this
weekend, was very impressed with
what he saw in South Africa.
Membership is still a priorty. Lions
please send your PU101's to Cabinet
Secretary Mike Cousins as he has to
prepare the listing and then email it
MDC Denis Meyer. These forms must
be in by the 30th of May to enable Denis
to prepare the Directory in time.
Mike says he has only received 5 clubs
PU101's. If you cannot do it
electronically please let me know as I
have forms at home. I was dismayed to
see the list of outstanding District Dues,
please settle these accounts as soon as
possible. MMR's have a number of
clubs that have not submitted for March
and April. At the end of June I have to
hand over to Mike plus give a correct
account of Members to Council to
enable them to charge the District.
Thanks to those clubs that have
inducted new members. At the end of
March we had a net increase of 18
members and I am sure by the end of
June we will have a bigger net growth.
Hibberdene Lions
More than 1000 now see better
By Susan Smuts-Steyn
As the Lions Club of Hibberdene presented recycled
spectacles to its eye clinic’s 1000th patient on Friday 18th
June, Club President Susan Smuts-Steyn took the
opportunity to tell guests something of the history of Lions’
service to the blind and visually impaired. Hibberdene Lions’
involvement with Lions Operation BrightSight and recycling
spectacles began almost immediately after the Club was
chartered 12 years ago. The opening of the eye clinic in
Hibberdene was the beginning of the very successful
relationship that Lions now have with both the Hibiscus Coast
and UGU District Municipalities. Hibberdene Lions Club is
acknowledged as a leader in sight services by Lions
countrywide. Her plea for assistance from the local municipalities
did not go unheeded by the guests of honour. Hibiscus Coast
Mayor, Clr Shusha also had some horrifying statistics on eyecare
in the public sector, showing that, effectively, 25
optometrists had to care for the needs of millions of citizens.
Speaker of the UGU District Municipality, Clr Ravi Pillay,
emphasised the need for water and sanitation in the overall fight
against disease in the area. “Water is life” he said, “and sanitation
is dignity”. He also pledged assistance towards the Cataract
Clinic plans. Mayor Shusha presented recycled spectacles to the
999th, 1000th and 1001st recipients, Maggi Govender, Queen
Chili and Clasne Jacobsz. The visiting optometrists Brian
Williams and (in absentia) Willem Nieuwenhuis were awarded
certificates of appreciation by Lion Peter Van Rooyen who also
presented a plaque to the administrator of the eye clinic, Lion Liz
Coulson in appreciation for her hard work for Lions Operation
BrightSight.
Thank you: Lion Lady Liz Coulson,
who is responsible for the administration
of the Hibberdene Lions’
eye clinic, received a plaque from
Lion Peter van Rooyen in appreciation
of her hard work over the years
Cowies Hill Lions
Once again preparations have begun for the 2007
Comrades Marathon down-run. Of particular importance
to Lions is the refreshment station at the top of Cowies
Hill, which is traditionally manned by the Cowies Hill Lions Club
together with help from friends, family, sister clubs and anyone
who doesn’t mind getting up early enough in the morning. This
year we are fortunate to have the support and sponsorship of
Reebok, who are one of the many sponsors of the Comrades
Marathon, and they are joining us at the top of the hill. They will
be displaying their banners down the hill for advertising purposes
as we will be having the TV cameras at our station again – this is
traditional for the down-run.
This marriage, we hope, will last for a long time. The first runners
start coming past just on 10am and the human snake lasts right
up to about 4pm with up to 16000 runners passing the station.
Mayor of Hibiscus Coast Municipality, Councillor Nolwazi
Shusha, (middle) presents recycled spectacles to
Hibberdene Lions’ eye clinic’s 999th recipient, Maggie
Govender (left), while Lion President Susan Smuts-Steyn
Bright Sight
By Dave Shone
Our main task is to make sure they are fed,
watered and encouraged over the hill and
along the remainder of the route. Once over
we then have the task of cleaning up the road
and packing everything away before settling
down for a few well-earned few drinks (supplied by our sponsors)
snacks and vibrant banter withpassing stragglers before saying
goodbye to old and some new friends until the next time…..
Sounds like a bit of hard work but a lot of fun? Well, come along
on Sunday 17th June and join us on this special day, the 27th
time that this club is manning the station. Please phone Dave
Shone (083-447 1930) or Alec Collier (084-7291990) for more
details or to pledge your support. Remember, the road at the
bottom of Cowies Hill closes no later than 08h30, so be there
early!

2008 LIONS MD 410
“UMZIMKULU CONVENTION”
Volume 1, Issue 9 / April/May 2007 Lions District 410C Monthly Newsletter Page 7
District 410C is due to host the next Convention. Owing to delays in the
construction of the new Bloemfontein Convention Centre, the Council of
Governors have decided to move the 2008 Lions Multiple District 410
Convention to Port Shepstone. This decision was taken after they met with
members of the Port Shepstone delegation at the 2007 Egoli Convention. A
Convention Committee has been formed under the Chairmanship of Convener,
IPDG Paul Brauteseth and the first meeting has already taken place. All Clubs in
Zone 6 will be requested to assist with this mammoth project. The dates for next
year’s Convention will be 23-26 April 2008. A Power Point presentation has been
prepared and will be circulated to all clubs in the MD. An official Convention web
site (www.sheppielions.org.za/umzimkulu2008) wll be launched soon with all
relevant information, online bookings etc. All clubs will be informed in due course of
further progress with this project. Many thanks to all delegates from Port
Shepstone and other Zone 6 clubs for agreeing to run with this project at such short
notice.
Aman is getting
into the shower
just as his wife
is finishing up her
shower, when the
doorbell rings. The
wife quickly wraps
herself in a towel and
runs downstairs.
When she opens the
door, there stands Bob, the next-door
neighbor.
Before she says a word, Bob says, "I'll give
you $800 to drop that towel."
After thinking for a moment, the woman
drops her towel and stands naked in front of
Bob. After a few seconds, Bob hands her
$800 and leaves.
The woman wraps back up in the towel and
goes back upstairs. When she gets to the
bathroom, her husband asks, "Who was
that?"
"It was Bob the next door neighbor," she
replies.
"Great!" the husband says, "did he say
anything about the $800 he owes me?"
Moral of the story:
If you share critical information pertaining to
credit and risk with your shareholders in
time, you may be in a position to prevent
avoidable exposure
