EAST COAST LIONS CHARTERED
At a charter dinner held at the Coastlands hotel in
Umhlanga Rocks District Governor Debbie Berry
officially inducted the new members of the Durban
East Coast Lions Club, (to be known as East Coast
Lions) and then proceeded to present them with their
official charter.
The 48 new members had put together a fantastic
night which was attended by 200 people among which
were the Consul General of India and his wife, as well
as the Multiple District Chairman Lion Rashmi
Kooverjee and his Leo daughter.
The club which meet on the Durban beachfront is now
officially the biggest club in the district and consists
solely of Indian members, mainly husbands and wives.
The club arose out of a contact from CC Rasmie and
after an initial meeting in early April at which stage
there were already 28 members the number quickly
grew.
Sponsored by the North Durban Club with District
Chairmen Denise Bolland and Trevor Hobbs as
guiding Lions
The club are already in full swing and have a number of
projects lined up. As mentioned by incoming President
Sundru Pillay in his address the club are in talks with
the Dental association on setting up a dental clinic at
which they would provide a feeding scheme. As a long
term project they are also planning to provide a home
for the Phoenix Hospice.
Through Lion Sundru they are getting involved in the
ICUSASA project, a project that provides chefs'
L-R Indian Consul General, CC Rushmie, DG Debbie, New
President Sundru, North Durban President Ian and Guiding lion
DC Denise
training for underprivileged children
To round off the evening The Indian Consul and his
wife were inducted as honary lions.
At the close of the proceedings the club boosted their
welfare account by raising R21 000 with a raffle of a
number of prizes of nights and weekends away. One
of which was won by DC Alec Collier. They also
auctioned off a weekend at the Table Bay Hotel in
Cape Town with flights included.
All the new lions are very enthusiastic about lions and
have undertaken to look at helping to charter two new
clubs in the new year.

The club meets on the first Friday of the month at the
Pavillion Hotel (opposite the Jewish club) and would
welcome a visit by any club.
Fellow Lions,
We have come to the end of the 2010-2011 Lionistic year,
although it only seems just a few months ago it began!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this year serving District 410-C as
District Governor. At times it has been incredibly stressful and
challenging, but the good definitely outweighs the bad. I have
laughed, cried, shared tremendous fellowship and made many
friends.
We have a very special District here, my Motto for the year
“ Many Hands make light work” has been seen throughout the
year by the way the cabinet have worked together in the best
interests of District C. I have enjoyed working with such a
dedicated team of individuals who have that shining light burning
brightly in their hearts for Lionism. I'd like to take this
opportunity to thank all cabinet members for your support and
dedication to the District.
There are many highlights of my year, too many to mention, but
one was going to Zambia in February. Firstly spending two days
with the International President Sid and his wife Judy in
Livingstone prior to the conference making memories which will
last forever. They truly are the inspirational people you imagine
them to be. Then continuing on to Lusaka for the All Africa
Conference, the seminars, plenary sessions and evenings were
all outstanding. I encourage everyone to attend and experience
the incredible warmth and fellowship from our African Lions.
Another highlight of the year has to be the recent Charter of East
Coast Lions Club. It was my honour to induct 48 members into the
th
club and officially hand over the charter on 18 June 2011. This
rd
Club is the 3 largest in the Multiple District and continues to
grow as the Consul General and his Wife were made honorary
members during the evening bringing the total to 50! It looks
promising that by the end of June we will have shown a positive
growth in membership within the District, but we still have a long
way before we become a par District (1250 members & 35 Clubs).
Next year will see a change and MERL will be replaced by the
Global Leadership Team and the Global Membership Team,
focusing on building Leadership and membership respectively. I
will be taking over the portfolios next year and I believe we are
heading in the right direction for a trend in a positive
membership growth.
I have visited all clubs within the District as well as many projects.
Having travelled throughout the District I have continually found

my inspiration from remarkable clubs and members, doing
amazing things within their communities. I have seen the light
shining on service everywhere I have been.
As Martin Luther King, Jr said;
The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: "If I
stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" But... the good
Samaritan reversed the question: "If I do not stop to help this man,
what will happen to him?"
You are those Samaritans and the 'Beacons of Hope' shining a
light for those you serve. I am proud to be a member of District
410-C, a district that has so many dedicated Lions who have made
it their mission to serve.
I wish DGE Stuart a successful and enjoyable year along with all
the incoming Presidents for 2011-2012.
To all of the clubs that have hosted me over the last year I send
my heartfelt thanks for the warm and generous way in which
you received me into you midst and made me feel very special.
I thank each and every Lion in District 410-C for your support
and giving me the opportunity to serve you. It has been both
my pleasure and my honour.
Yours In Service
Debbie
OBITUARY
It is with great saddness that two prominent lions
have recently been called to higher service.
Past District Governor Roy Hardman.
PDG Roy served as a member of Lions Clubs
International for the past 21 years and was a member
of the VIRGINIA Lions Club in District 410-C. He
Served as District Governor of District 410-C during
the 2003/2004 Lionistic Year. He was a much loved
and highly respected member of our Lions family and
will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Lion Elna Morley
Lion Elna was the wife of past Council Chairman Dave
Morley and was a member of the Kingsburgh Lions
Club. Having been a member of our organisation and a
regular at all District functions she will be greatly
missed.
This is the last newsletter for the year so if you will bear
with me I will give you a brief summary of my views on
the year.
As always the year has had it’s ups and downs. We
have unfortunate seen the passing on of a number of
Past District Governors in PDG Valie De Bruin, PCC
Arnold Clarke and recently PDG Roy Hardman.
Their presence will be missed as at present our district
seems particularly short of past District Governors to
pass on their skills.
Leadership within the district has been identified as
something we need to work on particularly hard and
the district training weekend was a start along this path
and one that will be continued in the next.
In contrast to the sadness there have been moments
of great delight and the charter of the East Coast Club
as covered in this addition was one such event.
DG Debbie must be congratulated on her year in
office. She has worked extremely hard and travelled
many miles to make the District what it is. Along the
way she has had many obstacles to overcome and
has always done so with great sensitivity and a
determination to ensure the best for the district.
The cabinet have taken great steps in trying to provide
support to the clubs in their mission of providing
service to the community. Some times those of us on
cabinet need to take the time to stop and find out what
the clubs out there require from cabinet. On the other
hand clubs in turn need to speak up and pass their
ideas on to their Zone Chairman so that the ideas can
be implemented.
What is needed is two way open channels of
communication. Through this newsletter I have trided
to keep you informed of the goings on within the clubs.
I am once again going to do the newsletter next year
and would appeal to all clubs to send me through their
information. I so often see from the club minutes that
clubs are submitting articles to their local newspapers
but fail to pass the same articles on to me.
One thing I as the editor would appreciate is some
feedback from clubs as to possible items that I could
include in future editions.
As you move into the new lions year I wish you all the
success in the world and urge you to continue serving
your community.
Trevor Hobbs

SHELLY BEACH
Members of the Shelly Lions decided to actively
t h
support World Environment Day on the 5 June by
planting indigenous trees in the local community. They
planted 2 Milkwood trees in the Voigt Park in St
Michaels as well as 3 more Milkwoods in the admiralty
on the beachfront. The club are initiating a joint venture
with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the Hibiscus Coast
Municipality to manage and rehabilitate the beautiful
Voigt Park near St Michaels Beach which has sadly
fallen into neglect over the past few years. By planting
these indigenous trees they took the first steps
towards reviving this beautiful sanctuary that has
recently needed some TLC. Time and resources will
be committed to this project in the coming months.
As part of their on-going commitment to Community
Services Loin John Naylor (right) hands over a cheque
for R 3 000.00 to Pastor Don Olding of the Margate
Baptist Church, the church will be running the popular
Youth Holiday Program during the school holidays from
t h
st
the 27 June to the 1 of July, the program attracts over
300 youth during the school holidays.
HOWICK
Lion Tony Farrow, on behalf of the Howick Lions recently
presented Lions Lady Marion Chapman with a Louis
Halse Award for her many years of unselfish dedication
and service to the Howick community.
SCOTTBURGH
Participants in the annual cycle race from
Johannesburg to the KZN south coast sea (JHB2C)
arrived in Scottburgh on 7 May and the Scottburgh
Lions Club were there to welcome them. They set up
refreshment tables at 6.00am in the Umzinto cane
fields and provided a large variety of energy giving food
and drinks to the weary cyclists. The rain had stopped
by 9.00am but the participants needed to have their
glasses cleaned of mud by the Lions so that they could
continue to the finish in Scottburgh. It was all over by
2.00pm and the Lions Team, who were also exhausted,
cleared up and returned home having had a very
rewarding morning.
The Lions manned another refreshment table again on
20/21 May but this time it was for the cycle race from
Sani Pass to the sea (Sani2C) and in glorious weather.
Many cyclists complimented the Lions for the
exemplary service given to them at this point of their
arduous race.
The Scottburgh Lions are invited to provide tables at
these two events every year which brings in much
needed funds for the Club.
HILTON
Hilton Lions as they have done for the past 10 years
presented audio books to the value of more than
R6000 to Lucy Bond the Chief Librarian of the Hilton
Library. The audio books are presented to the library
so that the print handicapped people who live in Hilton
can enjoy listening to a good book.
Lion Robin Giles hands over the audio books to Lucy Bons
You are now at a crossroads. This is your
opportunity to make the most important
decision you will ever make. Forget your
past. Who are you now? Who have you
decided you really are now? Don't think
about who you have been. Who are you
now? Who have you decided to become?
Make this decision consciously. Make it
carefully. Make it powerfully.
much needed supplies.
EMPANGENI
Empangeni hosted a belated High5 day by teaming up
with the Tanda Royal Zulu football club and sponsored
by Empangeni Milling who donated a cup of maize
meal for every high5 that the club obtained. The maze
meal collected was donated to Empangeni Child
welfare, Meals on wheels and the local Methodist
Church feeding scheme.
The day held at the Sanlam shopping centre included
lots of music and fun and opportunities for the public to
meet the players of Tanda Royal Zulu football team
and to obtain their autographs.

RAMSGATE
This year Ramsgate Lions Club has had a
wonderful year in terms of their membership and
set a example for all the clubs in the District. They
doubled their membership from 9 to 18 members.
The club also recently formed the Ramsgate Leos
Club and they held two events in the first month of
their formation. The first event was a talent show to
raise funds for their charity account.
PORT SHEPSTONE
Port Shepstone are another club who sponsor a Leo
The Leo's project for Term 2 was an internal school
"Winter Warmth" collection of blankets and clothing. All
the goods collected were handed over to Louisiana
Primary School where the Principal will distribute the
donations to the most needy families
Parents and friends eagerly await the start of the talent contest.
The Leos Club spend Youth Day working hard to
collect rubbish and clean up the environment in the
streets around their school. Hiding amongst the Leos
are Lions Wilma Nevin, Joan Robins and Rob Henry.
Can you spot them.
One of the Leos carries part of the blankets and clothing
collected.
The Leos proudly display the rubbish collected from around
their school, with Ramsgate Lions hidden amongst them.
The greatest good you can do for another
is not just share your riches,
but reveal to them their own.
With new Presidents about to take office here
are a few thoughts on the presidents leadership.
Presidents should keep in mind that, at the end of their
term of office, they would be called upon to give an
account of their conduct of the club's affairs during the
year.
They should build their clubs, in every way possible, to
be an example to other clubs, and a credit to the
community, the district and Lions Clubs International.
A good definition of leadership is "the knack of getting
other people to follow you and for them to readily do
the things you want them to do."
As a good leader, you will be equipped with
knowledge of the community, the club and the
Association. Good leaders realize the greatest
achievements are reached through a team effort,
using effective delegation.
It is essential for the president to be fully
knowledgeable of all members. Getting to know
members will assist with building a team and the
achievement of goals in fellowship and service.
A survey should be done to find out the wishes of
members, they're various talents and the time that
each has available to give to meetings, activities and
projects.
Making members feel needed is essential to build a
year of success; and you should be aware that
"Good members will take on important tasks, if they
see the importance of those tasks" .
On every occasion the members should be told what
is required and asked for their support. Ensure that
everyone is clear on the completion date and reasons
for their activity.
One major ingredient in the role of leadership is to be a
good "time manager” and this will earn respect from
members. Remember that the time of your members
can never be replaced. Use it well!
Agood motto is "Do it now"!
Plan to save time.
Write down the tasks that have to be done and number
them in order of importance. Begin at

Number (1) and stay with it until it is completed.
Recheck priorities, and then carry out task Number
(2).
If any task seems to be taking too much time, don't
worry about it. It is better to complete half of one task in
the time that has been allocated rather than half finish
all the tasks and have none completed. Do one thing
at a time and finish it.
Presidents who do not normally use a diary should get
one and develop the habit of using it. Diaries help to
reduce brain strain. A diary used properly can be an
administrator's most powerful tool; it will reduce the
incidence of forgotten projects and club commitments,
and assist in maintaining priorities when time is short.
But above all, remember to DO IT NOW!
PROPOSING MOTIONS
The following is a summary of what is needed
and how to handel proposals at your meetings

Any member may propose a motion.
The motion must be seconded to be
given time for debate.
The motion must be proposed in positive
terms, be clear and unambiguous.
A counter motion may be proposed
immediately (and seconded). It’s purpose
is to defeat the motion and it must be
debated first.
Amendments may now be moved and
seconded. They must not change the
essence of the original motion.
If the amendment is accepted, the
amended proposal becomes the
substantive motion to be voted upon.
There may be more than one amendment
before the vote is taken.
The President (with the secretary’s help)
must keep track of all this and make sure
all know what they are voting on.
Motions may not be proposed under
“General”. No “business” can be done
here.
