DISTRICT 410C
NEWSLETTER
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FROM DG HEATHER HARDMAN TO THE LIONS, LIONNESSES AND LEOS OF DISTRICT 410C
Volume 1, Issue 2
August 2006
Message from the District
Governor : Heather Hardman
Dear Lions, Lionesses,
Lion Ladies and Leo's
Our International
President Jimmy Ross
stated that we can serve our
community in seven different
ways. I will discuss one in each
newsletter.
1) WE SERVE... WITH A NEW
LIONS CLUBS INTERNA-
TIONAL
The world is changing and so it
Lions Clubs International. Today,
Lions increasingly comprise
diverse groups of serviceminded
men and women who
focus on results and effective
use of time. As part of its renewal,
Lions Clubs International
is targeting four main “markets”
of prospective members.
a) Urban populations:- To start
new city clubs, often connected
to an ethnic neighborhood, a
lifestyle or even a special interest.
b) “Baby Boomers”:- For the
influential generation born immediately
after World War II
c) Younger Generation:- For
educated and techno-savvy
younger generations – men and
women up to the age of 35.
d) Special interest groups:-
Lions clubs can provide groups
focused on a specific need—
nursing, law enforcement etc –
with an established structure
and network to help accomplish
their goals.
Lions Clubs International have
announced a new initiative for
2006-07 for New Clubs in Africa.
This is called the New Club
Financial Incentive Reimbursement
Fund. LCI will provide
reimbursement for the District
$500 for each and every club
ENVIRONMENTAL DATES TO REMEMBER
1-7 September 2006 Arbor Week
24 September 2006 - Heritage Day
27 September 2006 - World Tourism Day
15 - 21 October 2006 - National Marine Week
formed in this fiscal year. The
funds can be used to defray costs
of travel to new club, organization
meeting, Charter Night activities
and supplies for the new club.
When Chartering a new club
please contact me so that I can
send you the form to apply for the
$500 incentive. Lionesses that
have become Lions can apply for
their years of services as Lionesses
to be added to their years
of service as Lions.
Congratulations to Estcourt Lions
Club on 40 years of service. The
evening was very well organized
and enjoyable. I will be visiting the
MDC Denis Meyer
Many thanks to all Clubs
and Club PRO’s who have
taken the time to forward articles
to PDG Dave. Unfortunately
PDG Dave has had to deal with
various computer gremlins and
some articles have been lost
along the way. May I suggest
that clubs “cc” all articles submitted
for the newsletter to myself
as a backup copy. I will retain
these emails in a dedicated
PRO folder. Large attachments
still appear to be a problem. It
must be most frustrating for the
senders who have normal dial
up internet as these emails
probably take ages to send. If
Club PRO’s / Secretaries take
the time to resize the photos /
scanned articles that they are
sending, this will make a huge
difference. Unfortunately it is
difficult for me to give advice on
this as there are so many different
software packages that
The I.T. “Geek”
have been installed on computers
for this purpose. The
best advice that I can give is
for members to approach their
local computer dealer and
request advice.
Viruses are, once again, becoming
a huge problem. Most
are being forwarded as email
attachments and can create
havoc on a computer’s hard
drive. Please ensure that you
have an updated anti-virus
package installed on your
computer. If you do not, you
may download the free AVG
anti-virus program which has
proved to be one of the best
available. The address for this
download is :
Tribute to Lion Greg Coetzer—a Colleague and a Gentleman
On Saturday 19th August
Lion Greg Coetzer of the
Durban Central Lions Club was
Called to Higher Service. This
extraordinary colleague in
Lionism, friend and true gentleman
will be sorely missed by
all Lions within our District.
Lion Greg served as District
Chairman, Youth Exchange for
a number of years and was
currently serving as Secretary
of his Club. His passion for
Lionism, friendly and helpful
nature and true dedication was
an inspiration to us all. A large
number of Lions representing
Clubs from around the District
attended the funeral service
which was held in Durban
North. Words cannot describe
the sorrow and loss that has
been experienced by his family,
friends and Lions coll-
-eagues. Taken from us so
tragically, you were a true Lion
and we will all miss your smiling
face and forever helpful
attitude. To Bern, Damian,
PCC Gert, Maureen and family,
our deepest sympathy to
you all.
Rest in Peace our dear Friend,
we will never forget you!
Leos News
Eshowe swell
Leo numbers
In the small town
of Eshowe, an
Amiga Leo Club is
taking shape. A group of dedicated
young people wanting to
"serve" with a smile together.
An enthusiastic bunch, led by
Tarryn Armitage, who has
found young people who want
to fill a role in society and take
the opportunity to grow as
individuals while serving their
community and having fellowship
and fun together. Well
done Tarryn - we need more
young Lions like you!
Nestled in the tranquil but poverty
stricken rural Valley of a
1000 Hills area, is also a
young man with vision and
dedication. Bharat, a young
MDC Tricia Smith
man in his early twenties, had
taken it on his self to already
"serve with a smile". Although
he himself has nothing, he
wants to share the little he has
with others. They recently held
a children's party for about
+200 children in the area, providing
the children with a
cooked meal, face painting,
jumping castle and a small
goodie bag. Gillitts/
Camperdown Club has agreed
to sponsor this mushrooming
club and I'm sure they will
achieve great things in their
community.
Leos is the future of Lionism
and should anyone want me to
come and talk to a group of
students or young adults,
please give me a ring on 073
5721688.
Youth Exchange
Creating a spirit of understanding
amongst the
people of the world.
During the month of July six
exchange students landed
on the shores of KZN. They
came from varying cultures:
the clog country of the Netherlands,
the spaghetti capital
of Italy and a lone Slovak
model.
They roamed from Kei River
to the battlefields of Ladysmith
to the savannahs of
Zululand to the lush South
Coast, taking in the beauty
and the hospitality of numerous
Lion families as they
went. We tasted traditional
Dutch pancakes and authentic
Italian dishes and enjoyed
MDC Tricia Smith
learning about their homes,
families and cultures. Thank
you to all, Graham Halse
(Durban Host), Alec and
Tracey Collier (Cowies Hill),
Andrew and Debbie Bouwer
(Ladysmith), Paul Brauteseth
and Hannetjie (Port Shepstone),
Lawrence Galtrey
(Gillitts/Camperdown) for
their wonderful hospitality.
These young people all went
home with a positive view of
South Africa and a better
understanding
of the
beautiful
country
we call
home.
Christmas Cakes Project PDG Stan Foley Condolences
A
very big thank you to
those Clubs that submitted
their cake orders by the
11th August, however there
were 18 Clubs that did not and
had to be chased up. It is difficult
to get hold of Club’s Office
Bearers if the PU101 has not
been filled, surely on must
realise that I will use the Directory.
I met with Bradley Bishop of
Albany Durban in connection
with the cake deliveries, Thiru
Naidoo who has done the job
for a number of years has had
his leg amputated due to Diabetes.
Cakes will only be delivered
when all orders are in for a
particular run, it shows therefore
that Clubs who delay
sending in their orders, hold up
delivery, that affects those
Clubs that wish early delivery.
Remember that if you don’t
ask, you will never know and
that the worst someone can do
to you is say no. BE PROAC-
TIVE and get out there and sell
cakes. An example IPDG Paul
Brauteseth sold 50 cases by
simply asking, if you need any
help ask Paul.
Good selling
Stan
Our deepest
condolences go
out to the following
members who lost loved
ones :
ZC John and Lion Lady
Di Saunders and family
on the loss of your father
Lion Elaine De Jager on
the tragic loss of your
son.
Lions in Action
Eshowe Lions Pride in Service
We would like to start this
month with a VERY BIG
thank you to Lee-Mark Williamson
of uMhlathuze High Pressure
Cleaning from Richards
Bay. Lee-Mark saw our story
in the Zululand Observer regarding
the cleaning of the roof
of the Zululand Home for the
Aged and volunteered the use
of his equipment and workers.
Through this most generous
offer it took us one more Sunday
to get the roof clean and a
very, very good job was done
by all. We had a very successful
Leo’s meeting at the Bowling
Club on the 15th August,
with a very enthusiastic
speaker from Durban, Lion
Tricia Smith who is the Leo’s
co-ordinator. The response
was very encouraging and we
will, I am positive, be starting a
young Leo’s club very soon.
Should any young person out
there wish to know more or
even join the Leo’s please
contact Tarryn Armitage, who
organized the evening, on
0722275860.
We have just inducted a new
member to the pride, Matthew
Bennett, welcome and we
hope you have a long and
happy association with
Eshowe Lions. Our request for
clothing, toys, etc., has had a
very good response, and we
still need more, thank you so
much for all donations received
so far, these will be taken to
Mbongolwane Mission in the
very near future. We have
several projects coming up in
the near future, so watch this
space. Another thank you for
your support at the night
cricket on Wednesday evennings,
these will be coming to
an end with the finals on the 30
August.
Alice Walker
I would like to close with a
request that all the residents of
Eshowe, young and elderly,
support our local artist’s of
Eshowe by attending the Art
Exhibition on the 1,2,3, September.
All proceeds will be
going to The Zululand Home
for the Aged, see you there.
Please contact Margie Salter
information.
MISS PINETOWN PAGEANT COMING UP SOON!
Once again the Cowies Hill
Lions Club are busy preparing
for their annual Miss
Pinetown Pageant. This year
the event was originally
planned for 1st April but due to
a number of reasons beyond
our control, we had to abandon
it at the last minute and the
only alternative date that we
could get a booking for the
Pinetown Civic Centre was for
30th September.
Alternative venues were investigated
but proved either too
expensive or totally unsuitable
for an event of this size and
nature so we had to accept this
later date and started planning
accordingly. Needless to say
everything is on track once
again and everyone is enthusiastically
working towards this
event.
Some of the more difficult
things that need doing this
year are:
1. Making nearly 1000
white paper roses
which is an arduous
task by any means.
2. Cutting out 40 sets of
titles of broadway
shows from polystyrene.
3. Arranging flights and
accommodation for our
compere who is coming
all the way from
Johannesburg.
4. Finding a minimum of
20 beautiful girls to
enter and then finding
suitable outfits for them
to wear.
5. Sourcing prizes for the
winner and runners-up.
6. Arranging rehearsals
for the girls.
7. Organising suitable
judges.
8. Organising suitable
entertainment (at low
or no cost!)
9. Inviting and catering for
special guests.
10. Preparing and serving
approximately 500 sitdown
dinners for everyone
on the evening.
11. Sourcing donations
and sponsorship for
just about everything.
Yup, these are just a few of
the items on a long list of
“things to do” but after 16
Cowies Hill Lions
years of this, the members
have got it down to a fine art
and once again the show
promises to be “better and
bigger” than the last one! If
anyone from the corporate
world would like to become
involved by way of donations
or sponsorship, please
contact our President Alec
Collier on 084-7291990.
Since the induction of our new
President, Lion Steve Cockcroft
we have been kept extremely busy and
involved. Over the last month we have
raised funds for the Juana Maria Old
Age Home and Our local Morester
Childrens Home which was well attended
by our lions including and nice
to see a number of prospective lions
there as well. Currently we have 9
prospective members as this year our
drive is to grow our club back to where
we were two years ago.
We have also decided to market our
organization in line with International
President Jimmy Ross’ plea to promote
Lionism in our communities and
as a result we have placed an advert
about Lions in Our local newspaper
informing our community of our wonderful
organization.
We have also pledged R2000 toward
the diabetes bus as diabetes awareness
is serious and with so many people
not knowing their status, we can
make a difference for a relatively small
financial investment together with a
concerted effort.
This month also sees the anniversary
of our charter and we will be celebrating
36 years of involvement in Lionism,
not to mention the induction of 2 new
members on this auspicious occasion.
Strange but these things do happen
There was a case in a Hospital's ICU, where patients always
died in the same bed, every Sunday morning at 11am -
regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors
and some even thought that particular bed was the work of the
Devil... as to why the deaths at 11am on Sunday mornings? A
world-wide team of experts were constituted and they decided
to go down to the ward to investigate the cause of the incidents.
So on the next Sunday morning, a few minutes before
11, all doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves
what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses,
prayer books and other holy objects to ward off any evil spirits... Just then the
clock struck 11 and...............
In walked Sipho Tshabalala (the part-time Sunday cleaner). He entered the ward
and unplugged the life support system so that he could use the vacuum cleaner.
