MDC Denis Meyer
Many thanks to all Clubs
and Club PRO’s who have
taken the time to forward articles
to PDG Dave. Unfortunately
PDG Dave has had to deal with
various computer gremlins and
some articles have been lost
along the way. May I suggest
that clubs “cc” all articles submitted
for the newsletter to myself
as a backup copy. I will retain
these emails in a dedicated
PRO folder. Large attachments
still appear to be a problem. It
must be most frustrating for the
senders who have normal dial
up internet as these emails
probably take ages to send. If
Club PRO’s / Secretaries take
the time to resize the photos /
scanned articles that they are
sending, this will make a huge
difference. Unfortunately it is
difficult for me to give advice on
this as there are so many different
software packages that
The I.T. “Geek”
have been installed on computers
for this purpose. The
best advice that I can give is
for members to approach their
local computer dealer and
request advice.
Viruses are, once again, becoming
a huge problem. Most
are being forwarded as email
attachments and can create
havoc on a computer’s hard
drive. Please ensure that you
have an updated anti-virus
package installed on your
computer. If you do not, you
may download the free AVG
anti-virus program which has
proved to be one of the best
available. The address for this
download is :
Tribute to Lion Greg Coetzer—a Colleague and a Gentleman
On Saturday 19th August
Lion Greg Coetzer of the
Durban Central Lions Club was
Called to Higher Service. This
extraordinary colleague in
Lionism, friend and true gentleman
will be sorely missed by
all Lions within our District.
Lion Greg served as District
Chairman, Youth Exchange for
a number of years and was
currently serving as Secretary
of his Club. His passion for
Lionism, friendly and helpful
nature and true dedication was
an inspiration to us all. A large
number of Lions representing
Clubs from around the District
attended the funeral service
which was held in Durban
North. Words cannot describe
the sorrow and loss that has
been experienced by his family,
friends and Lions coll-
-eagues. Taken from us so
tragically, you were a true Lion
and we will all miss your smiling
face and forever helpful
attitude. To Bern, Damian,
PCC Gert, Maureen and family,
our deepest sympathy to
you all.
Rest in Peace our dear Friend,
we will never forget you!
Leos News
Eshowe swell
Leo numbers
In the small town
of Eshowe, an
Amiga Leo Club is
taking shape. A group of dedicated
young people wanting to
"serve" with a smile together.
An enthusiastic bunch, led by
Tarryn Armitage, who has
found young people who want
to fill a role in society and take
the opportunity to grow as
individuals while serving their
community and having fellowship
and fun together. Well
done Tarryn - we need more
young Lions like you!
Nestled in the tranquil but poverty
stricken rural Valley of a
1000 Hills area, is also a
young man with vision and
dedication. Bharat, a young
MDC Tricia Smith
man in his early twenties, had
taken it on his self to already
"serve with a smile". Although
he himself has nothing, he
wants to share the little he has
with others. They recently held
a children's party for about
+200 children in the area, providing
the children with a
cooked meal, face painting,
jumping castle and a small
goodie bag. Gillitts/
Camperdown Club has agreed
to sponsor this mushrooming
club and I'm sure they will
achieve great things in their
community.
Leos is the future of Lionism
and should anyone want me to
come and talk to a group of
students or young adults,
please give me a ring on 073
5721688.
Youth Exchange
Creating a spirit of understanding
amongst the
people of the world.
During the month of July six
exchange students landed
on the shores of KZN. They
came from varying cultures:
the clog country of the Netherlands,
the spaghetti capital
of Italy and a lone Slovak
model.
They roamed from Kei River
to the battlefields of Ladysmith
to the savannahs of
Zululand to the lush South
Coast, taking in the beauty
and the hospitality of numerous
Lion families as they
went. We tasted traditional
Dutch pancakes and authentic
Italian dishes and enjoyed
MDC Tricia Smith
learning about their homes,
families and cultures. Thank
you to all, Graham Halse
(Durban Host), Alec and
Tracey Collier (Cowies Hill),
Andrew and Debbie Bouwer
(Ladysmith), Paul Brauteseth
and Hannetjie (Port Shepstone),
Lawrence Galtrey
(Gillitts/Camperdown) for
their wonderful hospitality.
These young people all went
home with a positive view of
South Africa and a better
understanding
of the
beautiful
country
we call
home.
