NEWSLETTER
Volume 1, Issue 5
Nov / Dec 2006
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FROM DG HEATHER HARDMAN TO THE LIONS, LIONNESSES AND LEOS OF DISTRICT 410C
Governor’s Message
Dear
Fellow
Lions,
Lionesses,
Lion Ladies
and
Leos,
Well the
Festive Season is upon us once
again. I would like to take this
opportunity in wishing you and
your families a very Merry Xmas
and a prosperous New Year.
May we return from our short
break rejuvenated and ready to
reach our goals during the next
six months.
The fourth way to “Serve” is as
follows:
By Organizing New Clubs and
Building Membership:
The first purpose of our association
is “To organize, charter and
supervise service clubs to be
known as Lions Clubs” The
formation of new clubs is essential
to the Lions mission, as it
brings to the organization new
groups of talented leaders with
fresh energy and innovative
approaches to community service.
The only reason for a Lions
Club to exist is to serve. The
only reason to start a new Lions
club is to provide services where
they are needed but are not being
fully addressed.
I visited the following clubs this
month: Amanzimtoti and Kingsburgh.
It was a honour to be able
to share the 50 years service of
PCC Norval Gibson. It is sad to
say farewell to a Lion of 50 years
service. He will be sorely missed.
Lions, to have 50 years of service
is a milestone. Too many of us
are too quick to resign because
this is wrong and this member is
not doing this etc. Dedication is
the word in this organization.
Thanks to Lion President Malcolm
and members of Amanzimtoti
making my stay a memorable
one. Kingsburgh has very strong
and dedicated members. PDG
Dave and Lion Elna it was great
staying with you and the evening
was very personal as I got to
know the members individually.
Congratulations on your two new
members that will be inducted into
the new year.
VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR
NOMINEES: REMEMBER CLUB
PRESIDENTS THAT THE NOMI-
NEES CV ETC MUST BE SENT
TO ME BY THE END OF FEBRU-
ARY 2007. NOMINEES MUST
HAVE SERVED AS PRESIDENT,
SECRETARY, ON BOARD OF
DIRECTORS AND SERVED AS
ZONE CHAIRMAN/CT/CS. Lions
this is the most prestigious position
and very exciting. Make so
many new friends, a lot of hard
work and dedication. I really recommend
this position to someone
who is a people’s person and not
scared to take on hard work or
remarks from Lions that can hurt.
Family dues: hopefully those that
wish to take advantage of the
family dues service had to register
by 27th November 2006. If you
have missed the deadline you will
have to wait for the end of June
2007.
The last six months of serving
this District have been most enjoyable.
I thank those clubs that
have inducted new members and
Chartered Leo Clubs. May we go
from strength to strength in the
next six months.
CONVENTION EGOLI: The Vice
International President Al Brandel
will be our guest speaker at Convention.
District 410C, let have a
great attendance at this Convention.
To all those Lions who sent sympathy
messages on the loss of my
brother’s wife Jenny Gow, I thank
you from the bottom of my heart.
It was a great shock as she was
not ill.—Yours in Lionism
CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNCIL CHAIRMAN
Dear Lions
The year has almost turned
halfway. Most of us reflect back
on what happened during the
past year. If your plans did not
succeed completely, or if you had
problems, put it behind you and
keep focused on the future. Have
a positive outlook on everything
that you do. This will also have a
positive impact on those around
you. This is also the time of the
year that one must use to recharge
our batteries. We hope
and believe that all of you who
will be travelling to other destinations
will have a safe and enjoyable
trip. Start the New Year
fresh and with new vigour! Petro
and I want to wish all the Lions,
Lionesses, Leo's and your families
a very peaceful festive season
and a wonderful New Year.
We wish that those of you who
observe religious holidays, experience
the peace of your religion,
and receive the spiritual upliftment
that you seek.
used for various projects such
as the St Vincent’s Orphanage
Annual Christmas party and
Christmas day toys hand out
at St. Mary's
Hospital.
Toy Run
Bloemfontein Host Lions
Bloemfontein host held a diabetes
testing drive on Sat 4th
November at our craft market. We
tested 60 people for Sugar, Cholesterol,
BMI & Blood Pressure
with the following results being
reported Weight 22 , Glucose 10
abnormal, Cholesterol 15 abnormal
en Blood Pressure 7 abnormal.
The patients who were abnormal
were referred to their
G.P.'s for further tests.
We have also generated 10
scripts for bright sight of which
one will be processed this year
(emergency) and the other 9 will
be processed next year, the
scripts were all from an old age
home here in Bloemfontein.
Bloemfontein will be extending
their craft market in the new year
with the addition of a roof top
market on the last sat of each
month at Mimosa Mall.
We are also in preparation for a
membership evening early next
MIKE COUSINS
year which will be combined with
a wine tasting.
We have a transfer member Lion
Dennis Olivier from Upington who
was a Leo leader there, and has
agreed to see if he can get a Leo
club started in Bloemfontein
again. We will keep you posted on
developments.
Eshowe Lions
Well once again another year
is nearly over and we are
all reflecting on the year that has
nearly past, hope you have all
been good or else Father Xmas
won’t be filling your stockings!
Our Annual Senior Citizens Lunch
is once again over and wow did
we have some ‘skebengas’ visiting
our Shebeen. Everyone got
into the spirit of things and what a
joy to see all the happy faces.
This year once again we brought
Mim and John here from Durban,
they are really super and had
everyone going, dancing, singing
and enjoying the variety of music
they shared with us. We had a
surprise visit to our “Shebeen”
from Mama Thembu and her
Swinging Sowetan Sisters who
danced their way into everyones
hearts, the highlight (which had
everyone laughing and clapping)
was when our sister Hazelee
dropped part of her boob on the
floor from all the shaking. Well
done ladies! We wonder what the
men are going to do to beat that!
At this point we would like to
THANK the following for all their
help and the super gifts that were
donated: Nestle who sent us a
super hamper from Johannesburg,
Zululand Times, Eshowe Steers,
Cheryl Preston for Avon Products,
Eshowe Liquor World, Four
Square Liquor Store, Glengrove
Motors, Eshowe Louries Bed &
Breakfast, Protea Hotels,
Shakaland, George Hotel, Isibindi
Africa, Browns Cash & Carry, D.
Andrews, Jenny’s Salon, Salon
Lyn, Corner Café, Sunset Flowers,
The Oasis, Drift Bakery,
Gordon and Zululand Nurseries,
Gratton School, Andries Yaffe,
ALICE WALKER
Avrey Shelain, and last but certainly
not least, our young Leos
who gave up their time to help us
out all round on the day. As was
said last year if all you generous
supporters had seen the joy and
smiles on the faces of all who
received the prizes, you would
have known how worthwhile your
assistance was. Once again it
shows what can be achieved
when people work together to give
pleasure and that is what makes
us proud to be a LION!
Port Shepstone Lions Charter a new Leos Club
The Port Shepstone High
School Leos Club was officially
chartered on Friday 3rd
November. The new Club, sponsored
by the Lions Club of Port
Shepstone, has been active within the local
community for a number of years, especially
with regard to providing assistance and support
to the children’s ward at the local Provincial
hospital. These dedicated learners have
unselfishly volunteered their spare time to
PAUL BRAUTESETH
Port Shepstone Lions Annual Golf Day
The Port Shepstone Lions hosted their
Annual Sponsored Golf Day on Friday 24
November at the Port Shepstone Country
Club. This enjoyable annual event was convened
by Lion Pete Stoppel. There was a full
field and the thousands of rands worth of
PAUL BRAUTESETH
prizes were sponsored by Lion members from
within the Club as well as the local business
community. For the first time in the history of
the event, Harbour View Superspar were the
main sponsors. There was a great deal of
festivity both during the day as well as afterwards.
The game and prizegiving was followed
by a braai and live musical entertainment
and sing-a-long. The day’s event raised
the magnificent amount of R20 000-00 which
will be donated to the Reach For A Dream
Lions Christmas Cakes
To all Participating Lion Clubs,
Well Done
As at the 20th November we have
exceeded last year’s sales by 112
cases (1344 cakes), with our total
figures for 2006 standing at 1202
cases (14424 cakes).
The following are the leaders in the
sales figures:
Port Shepstone
120 cases
Bloemfontein Host 80 cases
North Durban
80 cases
Hilton
80 cases
Westville
80 cases
Remember the final date for orders is
Friday the 8th December, I would like
to have your orders in before that date
to organise stocks from Germiston,
Albany Durban bring down 100 cases
at a time. Albany Durban will receive
100 cases on 20th November of those
100 cases 66 cases have already
been ordered leaving a mere 34 cases
in stock in Durban.
Thanks to Zone 6 for their Newspaper
coverage of the cake project with
photo. I would if possible like to have a
copy for my records (yes I do keep a
PDG STAN (SANTA) FOLEY
scrapbook). ZC Willie van der Schyf
showed me the report at Mid Year
Conference, so the South Coast news
travels far and wide. If clubs do have
media coverage please forward a
copy to me.
Please remember that in any negotiations
the clubs make with shops or
any other outlet that the sale price
figure was set by Council at it’s February
meeting at R42 and should be sold
at that price to the public, I have heard
of cases of outlets selling at R39.99,
R40 and believe it or not at R54.99.
Shopping outlets for some strange
reason sell at just below R42 (R41.99
or R41.95, there is no problem with
that minor discount)
I need to make known to clubs that if
they do not submit their membership
figures to me as at end December
they will not come into contention for
the Highest per Capita Sales Patch.
Once again well done.
To our fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos, Lion Ladies and their Families
We wish you all the joy and beauty of the Season...
And a New Year filled with happiness and prosperity
