Dear Fellow Lions
Something Important.
1. In less than two weeks we have our Spring Conference in Graaff-Reinet. I do not believe that any Lion or Partner in
Service who has attended a Spring Conference can deny that it is a time or great fellowship and morale boosting. If we
can persuade our members to attend this highlight of our year, they will be recharged for many months to come.
Meeting other Lions, learning about our various projects, sharing ideas on service and fundraising all contributes
towards ensuring that we remain active, enthusiastic and dedicated Lions.
2. Each year we have difficulty finding a Lion prepared to lead our District as District Governor, and each year, once we
have persuaded someone to accept this position he/she has difficulty finding Lions to accept positions on his/her
Cabinet. Part of the reluctance on the part of our fellow Lions is a lack of knowledge – they do not know what the
various positions and portfolios are and what they involve. We need to educate, inform and orient our Lions better so
that they, with knowledge, become eager to serve our Organisation by accepting various positions.
Each one of us occupies the most important position in our Organisation – that of a Lion. We are the ones who do the hard
work, we are the ones that the public see, we are the ones whose service is appreciated by many in our communities. But each
organization needs managers as well, and each one of us has the ability to serve in these capacities.
In a Club, the members elect a President, one or more Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Director, Directors of
Service and Fundraising Projects, Lion Tamer and Tailtwister. Most of their functions are easy to understand.
At District level, the Lions elect a District Governor who forms a Cabinet comprising a Vice District Governor, Cabinet Secretary,
Cabinet Treasurer, District Chairpersons in various portfolios: Health. Constitutional matters, Membership, Retention, Extension,
Youth related matters, Training etc, some Districts have Region Chairpersons who oversee for the District Governor a number
of Clubs, and, the most important Cabinet Officers, the Zone Chairpersons. The District Governor and the Zone Chairpersons
form the District Governor’s Advisory Committee. The Zone Chairpersons – all of whom must have served as a Club President
before becoming a ZC, have contact with the Clubs in their Zones and are able to inform the DG of any challenges that the
Clubs are facing, as well as causes for celebration, thus forming a vital link between clubs and the DG (and other Cabinet
Officers). A Zone Chairperson visits Clubs, at times representing the DG, sometimes performing inductions of new members
and presidents, assisting clubs where there are difficulties, and generally being a father or mother figure to their clubs. It is a
very rewarding position.
At Multiple District level – in those countries that have MDs (a Multiple District comprises two or more Districts – in South Africa
our MD 410 comprises four Districts), the Council Chairperson heads the Council of Governors and is assisted by a Council
Secretary, a Council Treasurer and various MD portfolio co-ordinators. They manage the affairs of Lionism at a level that affects
the whole Multiple District.
Internationally, we have an International President and International Directors elected from all over the world (the Lionistic world
is divided into various geographical areas) and a large administrative staff based in Oakbrook in the USA. All of those people
are Lions, like you and me. Each one of us can occupy positions like them if we have the desire to do so.
Being a Lion in our Clubs is great. We have wonderful fellowship at meetings, projects and social events. We must not forget
that we are part of a large, world wide organization and our involvement and responsibility goes further than our Clubs. Let us
encourage each other to be prepared to take on greater roles than we are perhaps, limiting ourselves to at present.
Yours in Lionism
