Language Arts
Our language arts classes are primarily driven by the skills-based standards
defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Education in Reading,
Writing, Listening, Speaking, Research and Technology. This is a
course that focuses on literature study, vocabulary in literature terminology,
public speaking skills, continued advancement of writing skills
and preparation for PSSA testing. At least four school board approved
novels are studied with a focus on comprehension, integrated grammar
and vocabulary skills as well as literary connections.

Additionally, students will study units in fiction, poetry, and non-fiction
which will stem from the McDougal-Littell textbook series. Students
will also learn about the Holocaust and will participate in a career unit
which is presented in conjunction with the middle school guidance
counselor. Each student will also develop both a narrative and persuasive
speech which focuses on public speaking skills. Students looking
to further enhance their experience are encouraged to participate
in school sponsored activities such as the middle school newspaper,
Duquesne University’s English Festival, numerous writing contests and
The Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Shakespeare Monologue and Scene
contest.
