The Goal Setting and Decision Making Unit include a number <strong>of</strong> mini<br />

lessons addressed within this three-week unit. Students will have the<br />

opportunity to comprehend the various stages <strong>of</strong> development in addition<br />

to responsibilities that are necessary to be a successful child care<br />

provider. Students will also be introduced to a variety <strong>of</strong> different, yet<br />

common textiles, as well as how to fulfill basic laundry care duties <strong>of</strong><br />

these fabrics.<br />

Family and Consumer Sciences<br />

(8th Grade: 9-Week Daily Course)<br />

Students will rotate between three focuses: Independent Living, Nutrition<br />

and Food Preparation. This course will provide a variety <strong>of</strong> life skill<br />

knowledge as well as prepare the students for the high school level Family<br />

and Consumer Science classes.<br />

Independent Living is a three-week unit that introduces students to<br />

consumer skills needed for real life experiences. Students explore their<br />

rights and responsibilities as consumers. Advertising techniques and<br />

shopping skills are introduced and practiced in cooperative learning<br />

situations.<br />

The three-week Nutrition unit will focus on an in-depth exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

the nutrient groups. Students will identify nutrients, read food labels,<br />

and compare products to identify which foods are healthy. Students use<br />

My Plate food guidelines and Dietary Guidelines for Americans to develop<br />

a wellness plan.<br />

The Food Preparation unit includes five cooking labs over a span <strong>of</strong> three<br />

weeks. Students will expand their knowledge on the use <strong>of</strong> kitchen<br />

equipment such as the microwave, oven, cook top, blender, and mixer.<br />

In the cooking labs, the students will: plan, prepare, serve, and eat the<br />

dishes they prepare. Students will work in cooperative groups to complete<br />

lab activities.<br />

Keyboarding<br />

(5th and/or 6th Grade: One Semester A/B Days)<br />

This computer course introduces proper keyboarding methods such as<br />

posture and technique in order for students to develop touch-typing<br />

skills. The students will demonstrate correct finger utilization for the alpha,<br />

punctuation, and numeric keys. All keys are taught with emphasis<br />
