with the opportunity to experiment with different forms, which will<br />

result in both decorative and functional pieces. The elements and principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> design will be emphasized through 3-D art and design.<br />

Family and Consumer Sciences<br />

(5th and/or 6th Grade: One Semester A/B Days)<br />

This fifth and sixth grade course is composed <strong>of</strong> four units. In the first<br />

unit, Getting Along with Others, the students will identify and practice<br />

relationship skills that include communication, building trust, and<br />

adapting to change.<br />

The Foods and Nutrition unit is based on kitchen safety, measuring,<br />

utensil identification, basic cooking techniques and My Plate. These<br />

skills will be applied during five cooking labs using the electric stove<br />

top, oven, and broiler, and the microwave oven as well as other small<br />

appliances.<br />

Students will learn how to sew a button and other basic hand stitches<br />

in the Sewing unit. They will apply these learned skills while sewing a<br />

class chosen hand-sewn project.<br />

Family and Consumer Sciences<br />

(7th Grade: 9-Week Daily Course)<br />

Students will rotate between three focuses; Sewing Construction, Interior<br />

Design and Goal Setting/Decision Making. This course will provide<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> life skill knowledge as well as prepare the students for the<br />

high school level Family and Consumer Science classes.<br />

MAMS<br />

Sewing Construction is a three-week unit that will introduce students<br />

to basic sewing techniques, equipment components and the sewing machine.<br />

Students will explore their creative side in the sewing construction<br />

<strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> different project opportunities while in this unit.<br />

The three-week Interior Design unit will enable students to be introduced<br />

to and explore interior design strategies. Students will discover<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> different housing styles, furniture choices as well as the<br />

elements <strong>of</strong> design, principles <strong>of</strong> design, accessories and backgrounds<br />

found within our living corridors. Students will then apply these skills<br />

to develop and create their own personal 3-D virtual living space.<br />
