Cuts &
cautions
It's a month now since an election
precipitated the first coalition
government in Britain since WWII, and
the first ever Lib-Con alliance, reports
Chris Hopkins.
What’s the result so far? It's all been
rather quiet on the economics front.
Or at least it has been for Britain, sidelined
as it is by uproar in the eurozone
markets prompted by Greece's (and now
perhaps Hungary) debt worries. These
events have left the pre-election rhetoric
over cuts and budget deficit seeming
rather anti-climactic.
All in all, the only real bad news for the
coalition government, economically, has
been the sudden and unfortunate
departure of David Laws.
The highly regarded Chief Secretary to
the Treasury has been offloaded amidst a
scandal about his expenses and attempts
to keep his sexuality a secret.
Apart from the obvious loss of a
respected minister, the question remains
about who will now prevent our new and
most qualified chancellor George Osborne
from spilling hot coffee over himself or
attempting to nationalise cheese?
We can only hope Law's replacement
Danny Alexander can transfer the skills
acquired dealing with his small children to
managing precious Osborne's
economic quirks.
