AMBA - Deans & Directors Conference, Geneva<br />

This year, AMBA’s International Conference for Deans<br />

and Directors was held in <strong>the</strong> Grand Hotel Kempinski in<br />

Geneva. The conference provi<strong>de</strong>s an important<br />

opportunity for stakehol<strong>de</strong>rs in <strong>the</strong> business education<br />

field to examine <strong>the</strong> MBA and its future <strong>de</strong>velopment<br />

within <strong>the</strong> international community. It is a key forum for<br />

learning and networking. The conference was atten<strong>de</strong>d by<br />

Judith Bouvard, Thierry Grange, Phil Eyre and Nancy Armstrong.<br />

Phil Eyre chaired a very interesting session on <strong>the</strong> Future of <strong>the</strong> MBA. With <strong>the</strong> contribution of prestigious speakers<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Open University Business School and IESE Business School University of Navarra, Phil addressed <strong>the</strong> future<br />

of <strong>the</strong> full time MBA in light of distance and blen<strong>de</strong>d learning and, more generally, <strong>the</strong> balance that needs to be struck<br />

between technology-based learning and more traditional face-to-face classroom settings.<br />

Nancy contributed to a session entitled “Challenges in Faculty Recruitment and Development” and gave a talk about<br />

<strong>the</strong> issue of training practitioners to teach in accredited business schools like GGSB and presented GGSB’s faculty<br />

<strong>de</strong>velopment program which has been <strong>de</strong>ployed in <strong>Grenoble</strong> and Singapore this year and which she will <strong>de</strong>liver in <strong>the</strong><br />

form of a 3 day seminar in Saudi Arabia, <strong>the</strong> Lebanon and Egypt in <strong>the</strong> Fall.<br />

Early in June, Nancy Armstrong and Michelle Mielly atten<strong>de</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

18th edition of <strong>the</strong> EDiNEB International Conference in IDRAC,<br />

Lyon. The <strong>the</strong>me of <strong>the</strong> conference his year was “From Innovation<br />

to Crème <strong>de</strong> la Crème Education”.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> conference it became clear that participating institutions<br />

shared <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y look at education. From 40+ contributions<br />

(papers, workshops, keynotes) <strong>the</strong> mega-<strong>the</strong>me i<strong>de</strong>ntified was that<br />

of “The Whole Person” (a term introduced by prof. Peter Jarvis in his keynote address). Crème <strong>de</strong> la Crème Education<br />

focuses on <strong>the</strong> learner, and not just on <strong>the</strong> learner's cognitive capacities, but his/her entire being.<br />

Nancy and Michelle showed how 'Horseplay' (a pedagogical activity <strong>de</strong>signed by Nancy and piloted by <strong>the</strong> MSc<br />

<strong>Management</strong> Consulting – see previous newsletter) can literally lead to enhanced lea<strong>de</strong>rship skills and ‘mindfulness’<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir paper and presentation entitled "Concepts of Ethological (Natural) Lea<strong>de</strong>rship in Elite <strong>Management</strong> Education<br />

and won <strong>the</strong> 2011 EDiNEB Best Paper Award.<br />

Conference “Lea<strong>de</strong>rship – Managing for Values”<br />

Professor Jim Hoopes, of Babson College, USA gave a conference on 5 April that<br />

lasted from 6:00 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m.; a total of 15 people atten<strong>de</strong>d, of whom most<br />

were faculty and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs GGSB MBA/MIB/BIB stu<strong>de</strong>nts.<br />

The subject of Professor Hoopes address was “Lea<strong>de</strong>rship – Managing for Values”.<br />

This subject was based very wi<strong>de</strong>ly on his book about George W. Bush’s presi<strong>de</strong>ncy<br />

(“Hail to <strong>the</strong> CEO: The Failure of George W. Bush and <strong>the</strong> Cult of Moral Lea<strong>de</strong>rship”).<br />

Professor Hoopes sought to <strong>de</strong>fine “values” being used as goals – are <strong>the</strong>y a means to an end or an end in<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves? Where should values figure in political and economic life? The answer would appear to be that values<br />

are used as grounds for <strong>de</strong>fining political or economic goals but <strong>the</strong>y are not, in <strong>the</strong>mselves, a final objective.<br />

The <strong>de</strong>velopment of values over <strong>the</strong> last 20 years or more has rid<strong>de</strong>n on <strong>the</strong>ir moral i<strong>de</strong>als, but <strong>the</strong>y are only now
