AMBA - Deans & Directors Conference, Geneva
From Nancy Amstrong, GGSB Director of Studies
This year, AMBA’s International Conference for Deans
and Directors was held in the Grand Hotel Kempinski in
Geneva. The conference provides an important
opportunity for stakeholders in the business education
field to examine the MBA and its future development
within the international community. It is a key forum for
learning and networking. The conference was attended by
Judith Bouvard, Thierry Grange, Phil Eyre and Nancy Armstrong.
Phil Eyre chaired a very interesting session on the Future of the MBA. With the contribution of prestigious speakers
from the Open University Business School and IESE Business School University of Navarra, Phil addressed the future
of the full time MBA in light of distance and blended learning and, more generally, the balance that needs to be struck
between technology-based learning and more traditional face-to-face classroom settings.
Nancy contributed to a session entitled “Challenges in Faculty Recruitment and Development” and gave a talk about
the issue of training practitioners to teach in accredited business schools like GGSB and presented GGSB’s faculty
development program which has been deployed in Grenoble and Singapore this year and which she will deliver in the
form of a 3 day seminar in Saudi Arabia, the Lebanon and Egypt in the Fall.
Educational Innovation in Economics and Business International
Conference
From Nancy Amstrong, GGSB Director of Studies
Early in June, Nancy Armstrong and Michelle Mielly attended the
18th edition of the EDiNEB International Conference in IDRAC,
Lyon. The theme of the conference his year was “From Innovation
to Crème de la Crème Education”.
During the conference it became clear that participating institutions
shared the way they look at education. From 40+ contributions
(papers, workshops, keynotes) the mega-theme identified was that
of “The Whole Person” (a term introduced by prof. Peter Jarvis in his keynote address). Crème de la Crème Education
focuses on the learner, and not just on the learner's cognitive capacities, but his/her entire being.
Nancy and Michelle showed how 'Horseplay' (a pedagogical activity designed by Nancy and piloted by the MSc
Management Consulting – see previous newsletter) can literally lead to enhanced leadership skills and ‘mindfulness’
in their paper and presentation entitled "Concepts of Ethological (Natural) Leadership in Elite Management Education
and won the 2011 EDiNEB Best Paper Award.
Conference “Leadership – Managing for Values”
From George Room
Professor Jim Hoopes, of Babson College, USA gave a conference on 5 April that
lasted from 6:00 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m.; a total of 15 people attended, of whom most
were faculty and the others GGSB MBA/MIB/BIB students.
The subject of Professor Hoopes address was “Leadership – Managing for Values”.
This subject was based very widely on his book about George W. Bush’s presidency
(“Hail to the CEO: The Failure of George W. Bush and the Cult of Moral Leadership”).
Professor Hoopes sought to define “values” being used as goals – are they a means to an end or an end in
themselves? Where should values figure in political and economic life? The answer would appear to be that values
are used as grounds for defining political or economic goals but they are not, in themselves, a final objective.
The development of values over the last 20 years or more has ridden on their moral ideals, but they are only now
