You may have occasion to use the 

ILYA Scow Slants or the ILYA Web Site 

(www.ilya.org) to advertise a boat or related 

equipment. Evidently some scam 

artists have found the ILYA Web site and 

its classified ad page. One of our current 

advertisers told me he was contacted twice 

recently with the scam. I heard a similar 

story from two other ILYA members recently 

as well. 

The scam works something like this 

(with possible variations): The interested 

person (scammer) supposedly has a friend 

or business acquaintance who owes him 

Warning: Classifieds Scam 

money. That money (more than you are 

asking for the boat) is sent to you in the form 

of a cashier’s check (WHICH IS FAKE!). 

When you receive the cashier’s check, you 

are supposed to deposit it and send a personal 

check for the overage amount to the 

scammer. 

Here’s how you get taken: The bank 

has no idea that the cashier’s check is fake, 

so they accept it, and you send a good check 

to the scammer. After a few days, the bank 

finds out that the cashier’s check was fake, 

and you are responsible for it. By then you 

are out your good check, and possibly the 

boat, if the scammer 

even bothered to come 

get it. 

You have probably 

read about this type of 

scam in your local newspaper. 

I know it has been 

written about in the Janesville (Wis.) Gazette 

a couple of times now. 

Precautions: Don’t accept or deposit 

any checks without having the bank first 

verify its authenticity. Tell others about 

this scam, especially if they may have 

items advertised somewhere.

The third annual X clinic was held 

on Cedar Lake, WI. on June 13th - 

15th. Twenty-one of 64 sailors 

were girls enjoying this great sport. 

But not to be overlooked, the 

gentlemen had exceptional 

competition at the three-day event.

a selection of light and heavy air and 

threatening storms. Cedar members 

provided great meals and support. 

At the end of the event, the six-race 

regatta had Beaver’s Chris and Greta 

Banholzer as champions. Pewaukee’s 

Drake and Charlie Sprinkman sailed 

consistently to second. Cedar’s 

Patrick Egan with Annie 

Sprinkman took third; 

Nagawicka’s Ryan Grosch with 

Alex Stuckart finished fourth and

Thirty three boats sailed 

in the Big Kahuna 

Xtreme Regatta. The 

weather varied, but fun 

prevailed. Three races 

were completed. After 

the racing was complete, 

everyone splashed, slid down slides, and cruised the 

lazy river in tubes at the new Oshkosh Community 

Water Park. Sailors and parents alike had fun with 

the Hawaiian theme. Many were spotted to wear 

their leis throughout the entire regatta. 

Information for the 2007 Xtreme Regatta will be 

available by the Winter Inland. Expect more sailing, 

more fun, and a relaxed regatta experience you’ve

The 36th. annual Quad lakes X regatta with 28 boats 

from Beulah, Cedar, Nagawicka and Pine took place 

on July 5th. and 6th., hosted by Lake Beulah. 

Sailors, parents, and coaches arrived early and were 

ready to go by 10:00 am. 

Two races were sailed before breaking for lunch and 

volleyball. Beulah and Cedar won hard fought 

matches over Pine and Nagawicka and then Chief 

Judge Milt Haeger found some breeze and returned 

the sailors to the water. 

All three races were sailed in typical Beulah breeze 

of about 4 to 6 mph with noticeable shifts. After day 

one Joe and Charlie Kutchenreuter sailing the B-3 

were the leaders winning all three! Danny Tighe of 

Pine also had a great day with finishes of 2,2,4. 

Race 4 also was won by Joe and Charlie on the B-3. 

Trophies were awarded to the top ten skippers and 

crew followed by the championship volleyball 

showdown between Beulah and Cedar. Cedar won 

the first game, Beulah the second and Cedar 

prevailed in the final game to win the coveted 

Volleyball Trophy. Lake Beulah enjoyed the 

opportunity to host this fine event. Complete results

Day two started much like day one, calm and hot. 

Chief judge Haeger sent the boats out and once they 

were all on the water, he called for the wind and got a 

breeze similar to the previous day. Using a different 

part of the lake the boats were able to get the fourth 

and final race in. Top notch dedicated race 

management makes it easy to have a successful 

regatta. Thanks Milt and crew!


I never imagined that sailing Opti’s would help me to 

qualify for the Laser Worlds in JeJu, South Korea. I 

was proud to represent the USA as one of 5 

Americans who qualified 

for worlds. 

I found out that there 

were only three 

teenagers that competed 

at the Laser Worlds. I 

grew up sailing Opti’s 

and crewing on an X 

Boat on Lake 

Minnetonka and 

around the Inland. I 

soon got my own X- 

boat and grew out of 

the Opti. I started to 

learn about Laser 

Sailing though my High 

School sailing team. Eric Oppen; my mentor and 

Coach as an Opti sailor loaned me his Laser while he 

was sailing in College. I have been sailing Laser’s 

seriously for the last two years. I sailed at a National 

level for the last year and that is how I qualified for 

Laser Worlds. 

When I received the phone call that invited me to sail 

in the worlds I was coaching my home lakes Opti 

team at the Inland Opti Championships. I was very 

excited and was unsure of what to think. I trained as 

much as I could before hand in order to try to prepare 

myself for what I was about to face. September 

came all too soon and that meant one thing—school 

was starting. I went to the first day of classes then 

hopped on a plane to Jeju Island, South Korea. 

While training before the event with Bradley Funk and 

Andrew Campbell we had some time to visit the island and 

see some interesting things. We visited a 

very old Buddhist Temple built 

into the rocks, The Stadium 

where the World Cup Soccer 

had been played and attempted 

to go shopping.

light as we were heading 

out to the race course. 

Then all of the sudden 

you could see this line of 

wind come down and all 

of the sudden it was 25 

knots with 6-10 foot 

waves. We didn’t sail a 

race under 15 knots with 

8 to sometimes 12 foot waves. Being 6’3 and 

weighing 165 did not help me when I was going up 

against men who were my size plus 30 pounds 

heavier. The weather was challenging and I 

experienced my first Typhoon. The sailing was fun 

and super challenging. 

Looking back at it I learned a lot and had a lot of fun. 

I knew my results wouldn’t be anything unreal 

because of the conditions but I sailed the best I could. 

I made many new friends from different countries 

and of course like all kids learning a new language, 

picked up a few bad words in other languages. All in 

all this Inland sailor had a really good time and I 

hope to keep sailing well and qualifying for future 

Laser Worlds.

The LOP’N was held at Pewaukee Yacht Club last 

Thursday, June 15th. Warm weather and light winds 

lead to four great races in the Junior and Senior 

fleets. There were forty-one sailors that took part in 

the racing with great judging lead by Russ Ackley 

and PJ Friend. 

Nicholas Clemence (PYC), for the second year in a 

row, won the senior fleet. He was followed closely 

by Spencer Jones (PYC) in second, Parker Trepton 

(LYC) third, PJ Feichtmeier (PYC) fourth and Augie 

Dale (PYC) rounding out the top five. 

Wills Duchow (PYC) had an impressive four race 

winning streak to be crowned junior champion. Hot 

on his trail were Trevor Trepton (LYC) in second, 

Tommy Calvy (PYC) in third, Tom Groskopf 

(OLYC) fourth and Scott Sazama (OLYC) in fifth.

The USODA Upper Midwest Championships were 

held on Lake Minnetonka on July 8th and 9th. We 

had beautiful weather for the whole regatta. The 

winds were consistently around 8-12 Miles per hour. 

The sun was shining and temperatures were around 80- 

85 degrees. The sailors and families all had 

a great time sailing, swimming and 

playing games on the Island of the 

Minnetonka Yacht Club. The big tent 

was a great place to gather while eating 

with all our Opti friends.

was for the kids to have fun, sail and 

eat well. I also wanted to teach parents 

and kids that USODA (United States 

Optimist Dingy Association) was just a 

name of an organization and nothing to be 

nervous about when it came to our kids and 

sailing. We had some competition in the 

Midwest on the same weekend for Opti sailing 

and were very pleased with 31 Red, White & Blue 

Fleet sailors and 16 Green Fleeter Sailors. 

Some of the Green Fleeters had just come out of 

the area sailing schools' learn-to-race classes and had 

a great time. With the coaches help they learned a lot. 

These kids became inspired to do more races 

throughout the rest of the season. The top three 

finishers for Green Fleet were 1. Ford Johnstone, 2. 

Trevor Trepton and 3 Marissa Bernstein. 

The Championship Fleet was very competitive and 

they all had a good time while showing great

exciting event. The kids all became excited as we 

announced who the kids were who would be going 

to Team Trials. The twelve sailors who qualified to 

go to Team Trials are Connor and Parker Trepton 

from Lac LaBelle, Harrison Burton, Addy 

Ferguson, Lucas Vroege, Griffin Robillard, Ian 

Solum, Declan Armour, Charlie Burton, and Ben 

Garber all from Minnetonka, Eddie Cox from 

White Bear and Adam Voortman from Chicago. 

Congratulations to all the sailors who qualified and 

we wish them well at Team Trials. 

Ford Johnstone (Beulah), Trevor Trepton (LaBelle), and 

their families made the trip to Sarasota, Florida in August 

to compete in the Green Fleet Nationals. With winds 

ranging from 5 to 8 knots, the Inland representatives 

competed in a fleet of 65 sailors. With coach Nicole 

Hudson looking on, Ford and Trevor both got off to slow 

starts in the first race, finishing 25 th and 34 th , respectively. 

Beginning with the second race, the two young skippers 

became more comfortable starting in the large fleet and 

finished in the top ten in each of their next three races.

After ten races, Trevor turned out to be the most consistent 

competitor with only two finishes out of the top ten. While 

he did not win a race, he earned the title of USODA National 

Green Fleet Champion. In the meantime, Ford finished fifth, 

just ten points behind his friend. Also competing from the 

Midwest were William Curtiss, Hannah Danly, and Maggie 

Holz. 

Look for these sailors next summer on Minnetonka which 

hosts the 2007 USODA National Championships.


The No Tears West regatta was held on July 7th at 

Clear Lake Yacht Club. 

The day started with a surprise visit from 

Commodore Tom Hodgson! Eighteen Optis off to 

the races early at 9:30 as winds were expected to 

build—one race finished before Head PRO 

Mark Tesar wisely called the second as gusts 

to 18 mph were recorded. 

In for lunch the kids enjoyed a great meal and 

prize drawing as races were called for the day.

In George Washington’s days, there were no 

cameras. One’s image was either sculpted or 

painted. Some paintings of George Washington 

showed him standing behind a desk with one arm 

behind his back while others showed both legs and 

both arms. 

Prices charged by painters were not based on 

how many people were to be painted, but by how 

many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs 

are “limbs,” therefore painting them would cost 

the buyer more. Hence the expression: "Okay, 

but it will cost you an arm and a leg" 

As incredible as it sounds, men and women took 

baths only twice a year! (May and October) 

Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved 

their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore 

wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made 

from wool. The wigs couldn’t be washed, so to 

clean them they could carve out a loaf of bread, 

put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. 

The heat would make the wig big and fluffy,hence 

the term “big wig.” 

Today we often use the term “here comes the 

Big Wig” because someone appears to be or is 

powerful and wealthy. 

Needless to say, personal hygiene left much room 

for improvement. As a result, many women and 

men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The 

women would spread bee’s wax over their facial 

skin to smooth out their complexions. When they 

were speaking to each other, if a woman began to 

stare at another woman’s face she was told “mind 

your own bee’s wax.” Should the woman smile, the 

wax would crack, hence the term “crack a smile.” 

Also, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax 

would melt and therefore the expression “losing face.

Pewaukee Yacht Club was the gracious host of the 

No Tears East Regatta on July 24th. Pewaukee had 

all the wind the C’s, X’s and A’s desired over the 

previous weekend. With blasts over 20 and a No 

Tears fleet ready to compete, the challenge fell on 

capable sailing school instructors to handle nervous 

parents and excited sailors.

Jacques who left his boat to go rescue fellow sailors 

twice. He was separated from a green Croc 

(waterproof shoes for you not-so-hip) which was 

returned by some fellow boater. Scott Sazama of 

Okauchee won the tipover prize with a total seven 

and he lived to tell the story! Caroline Keck of 

LaBelle won a prize for smiling the most during 

tipovers. It never phases these kids. The top story 

was the start in big wind, I flag just up at four 

minutes when a most attractive, young girl, Paige 

Carlson from Powers sails by the committee boat to 

see if it had a ponytail holder to keep her hair back in 

the big wind. Race Committee member Fritz Ruf 

reported he had never heard that one. Race 

Committee member Kelly Reese sacrificed her own 

hair adornment to the sailor.

First nice winds, then strong winds Friday, followed 

by big air Saturday, then no wind Sunday. 

These conditions challenged the X Class at Inter- 

Lake hosted by Clear Lake Yacht Club August 6-8. 

Clear Lake X sailor Jon Osmundson was able to 

handle all wind and wave conditions, winning all 

three Inter-Lake X Class races this summer. Jon 

Osmundson skipped with consistency in all three 

races, bringing his Z-84 into first place with a total of 

only 3 points. 

Saturday one race was sailed, following a delay due 

to weather concerns. After a large weather front 

passed, without delay the course was set and the X 

fleet sailed a race in what developed into a 

big-air contest. 

In second overall was Mike Hansen, sailing M-99 

and finished 4-2-3 in the three races with a total score 

of 9 points. In third place was Chris Moen, P-1, with 

a close 11 points. Fourth was Addy Ferguson, sailing 

M-87 to a finish of 16 points with 6-3-7 races, 

followed by Spencer Chute, sailing M-33 and 

finishing with 20 points with races of 11-4-5. 

On Sunday morning, several shifty lines of wind 

were enough to entice the fleet out for two more 

races. However, after three 120-degree direction 

changes, the race committee wisely decided to cancel 

for the morning. Three races completed this year’s 

Inter-Lake regatta for the 17-boat X Class fleet.

Threatening clouds welcomed the 100+ sailors to the 

Lake Beulah Yacht Club for the 14 th annual Beulah 

Fun Regatta. Sailed in a RWB, Green, and No Tears 

format, the Optimist sailors were welcomed by regatta 

chair John Sullivan and his hearty crew of volunteers. 

RWB PRO Brian Brickler reviewed the sailing 

instructions (SI’s) with the competitors and fired the one 

hour warning, signifying the harbor start. 

With northerly breezes at 10 mph, MOST members 

Nicholas Clemence of Pewaukee, Malcolm 

Lamphere of Geneva, and Will Holz of Chicago 

started strongly and led start to finish in race one. 

Following an extended break in the action for a 

thunderstorm to pass, Clemence repeated with 

another race win. This time, however, Geneva’s 

Davis Porter, Hunter Johnstone of Lake Forest, and 

Pewaukee’s Augie Dale got into the mix as winds 

dropped to less than 5 mph. In the final race of the 

day, George Kutschenreuter of Beulah pulled out a 

victory. Kutsch outlasted Clay Danly of Lake Bluff. 

Overall, Clemence took home the title over Will 

Holtz, Hunter Johnstone, Davis Porter and Alex 

Curtiss. Beulah’s Andrea Sullivan finished as top 

girl sailor, eighth place overall. 

In the Green Fleet, Hannah Ripkey of Geneva took 

race one over Will Komas and Gregory Westin, both 

of Lake Beulah, and Evan Jones of Sheridan Shore. 

Trevor Trepton of LaBelle took the second race, 

winning a tightly contested race with Ford Johnstone 

and John Barr of Beulah. In the third and final race, 

Will Komas outlasted Johnstone and Cedar’s Lydia 

Garlie who closed with her best finish of the event. 

Despite not winning a race, Ford took the overall 

Green Fleet title over Trevor by seven points. Westin 

was third followed by Garlie in fourth. 

During the trophy ceremony a bit later in the 

morning, no puffs of wind were visible on any part of 

the lake, which allowed the sailors to enjoy the day 

without struggling through what would have been a 

shifty light-air race. 

We look forward to the Inter-Lake next year at 

Okoboji yacht Club.

The ILYA Youth Champs were graciously hosted by 

Cedar Lake Yacht Club, WI. on June 24th and 25th. 

The small and talented group were met with plenty 

of help and encouragement from the wonderful 

Cedar volunteers.. 

PRO Chip Mann was faced with a mixed bag on day 

one as he abandoned race 1, finished race 2 in 

virtually dead calm, took an hour break and 

concluded the day with three medium races run 

3:00-6:00.

the Full-Rig fleet posting a 1-1-2 for the day. Matt 

Schmidt got it going to be second in the first two 

races and fourth in the finale. Rob Pickens matched 

Matt with a 4-3-1. Kevin Campbell sailed 

consistently well to finish third overall. 

Joe Kutschenreuter aced the Radial fleet, winning all 

the races. Christine Porter just couldn't catch him, 

putting up deuces all day. Minnetonka’s Nick Miller 

was in third. 

Local knowledge paid off as Patti Schmidt with crew 

Becca took over the lead on the first race today. She 

won all three races to best Liz Prange by three points. 

Dan Barker was third. All six 420 sailors sail for 

UW- Madison who brought a total of 10 sailors to the 

event. Oshkosh brought six new 420 sailors to Cedar 

to compete in their first ILYA Youth Champs. 

Thanks to Cedar’s Karen and Dave Schmidt for 

hosting, Cedar race committee members Ralph, 

Nancy and Jack Eckert, Jim Wiebrecht and Roger 

Walsh led by PRO Chip Mann. Commodore Anita 

Hauske and her Cedar crew are to be commended

After a year of planning and building for the 2006 X-Inland it was complete! 

We built it and they came! 91 X-Boaters registered for the event—48 in the Senior Fleet and 43 in the Junior 

Fleet. Chairing the regatta were Bob and Cathy Allen, Jule and Betsy Hannaford, and Sharon and Dave 

Garber. With the regatta held on the MYC Lighthouse Island it was our goal to to accomodate all. “You want 

it- We got it” soon became our slogan for the regatta. Thanks to careful planning by Tom Burton, every X- 

Boat had their own dock and land base. We saw a lot of smiles from the parents to have this type of lake 

access available. It is key to keep the youth parents happy, and we strongly feel it was done. The weather was 

perfect for the Island and our 4 pontoons were running smoothly the whole regatta to keep everyone moving. 

The greatest challenge on day one was to keep Minnetonka’s guests hydrated and comfortable in the 95+ 

weather. The forecast for the entire regatta was increasing temps. But sailors know how to have fun and 

Tonka knows how to run an event: 35 cases of water, 350 lunches, a dinner party with tacos, hamburgers, 

salads and just plain fun all day. 

During more serious times, parents and instructors met to discuss the “state of the X boat.” An open 

discussion resulted in an initiative to investigate improved flotation and rescuing capability in the boat. The 

age-old discussion of where to go next yielded the same lack of direction but with one clear message: sailors 

want to sail after X boats. One new event to be implemented in the 2007 season will be a clinic or sailing 

event the last two weeks of May for the college sailors and a repeat of the event the last two weeks of August 

for the graduating or older X boaters. 

Back to Fun!! Volleyball was truly the game of the day. Round Robin play began 15 minutes after the 

postpone flag was raised at 9:30. A new bracket for instructors was developed with an ultimate championship 

tomorrow of students v. the instructors. 

The big event on Saturday evening at the Woodhill Country Club was a record crowd at a X-Social Event. 

500 parents and sailors came together to play volleyball, eat, drink, hang out and just talk sailing—Coach 

Lindsay Allen even showed up the sailors with her fine Limbo talents.

followed, then Peter Studer, with Beulah’s Joe Kutschenreuter and Will Haeger in fourth and fifth. 

Commodore Jule Hannaford added to the fun each night with raffle items awarded to happy winners. Day 2 

opened with hot weather accompanied by wind to complete three races. 

On Thursday the heat index registered 111 degrees. Smart race committee work and the tireless efforts of the 

Minnetonka organizers allowed sailors to withstand the heat to complete three races today. Both fleets left the 

shore at 8:30 for a 9:30 start. While conditions looked good for a medium air day, the wind fizzled early. The 

seniors rested on the water with trains of boats in tow and then swimming. The wind came up for one race in the 

heat. The morning’s winner was Minnetonka’s Mike Hanson. Second place went to Joe Kutsch. Alex DeGuire 

and Samantha Kultgen, V-133 surprised the crowd with a hard-fought battle with Coye Harrett and Mike Six, 

I-41. Seniors went in to rest, drink and eat. 

The senior afternoon was comprised 

of two races: Jon Osmundson and 

Harrison Southwick, Z-84, took the 

gun in race 3. They lead from gun to 

gun. Chris Wean and Joey Harvat, 

OO-26, sailed extremely well to take 

second place honors. Peter and 

Brian Studer, A-2, got third.

of “so-so” races with a

The Junior Fleet was 43 strong, 

overflowing with talent. They 

also were sent out the first 

morning. When the wind died, 

they were sent in to wait for wind 

on shore. In the late afternoon 

enough wind to run a race 

appeared. Davis Porter and Joe 

Rolander, I-49, found the light 

steady wind to their liking, 

leading the pack. Jacob Zea and 

Lillian George, E-2, were rockets 

in second place. Kyle Stack and 

David Wean sailed their best to 

take third place honors. 

While conditions looked good for a 

medium air day. the wind fizzled 

early with the Juniors sent in. 

About mid-day Juniors returned to 

the water for three back-to-back-toback 

races with water guaranteed 

and swimming to cool bodies 

down. In the first race of the day, 

George Kutschenreuter and 

Michael Barr, B-16, took off and 

never looked back. Robbie Allen 

and Jack Carlson, M-44, sailed a 

beautiful race in the second spot. 

Jordan Kaerek and Nathan Heppe,

“Forty years ago today, “ says Will Norris, “this great

sail East Coast, SE or West Coast, Minnetonka is the 

best. Thank you, my friends in Minnesota.” And with 

those words the 

ILYA X Champs 

of 2006 were 

recorded in the 

history books.

emotional awards 

ceremony. 

Commodore Tom 

Hodgson spoke of this as 

a time for brothers, for family and for friends. The 30 

teams presented with awards were comprised of 

many brother or sibling combinations. The photo 

above shows just that: Dad Jim Kutschenreuter was 

presented with the Kate Goes Sportsmanship Award. 

“Kutsch” was seen on land and water assisting all the 

sailors with taxiing, water supply and was “last man 

standing” in the continued heat at the launch assisting 

the boats at Carson’s Bay. Commodore Hodgson 

presented 15th to 2nd in both fleets and then for the 

finale called up “Uncle Will” to the applause of the 

parents who had not seen Will in decades. The 

Kutschenreuter boys thanked the appropriate entities 

but George concluded the presentation by thanking 

his grandmother, Nan Norris, “without whom this 

would not happen”. Thumping his heart, saying he 

could feel her here, he proclaimed, “I love you.” A 

touching moment which exemplifies all the ILYA is 

and who we are—families, old dear friends and new 

friends we meet at each event.

The Race Commitee of both fleets did a fabulous job 

of running 6 races. Tom Hodgson, Chip Mann, and 

Terry Bischoff really showed that they are truly all 

about the kids. In the Senior Fleet there were 6 

different race winners!! 

Hopefully everyone at some point will have the 

opportunity to spectate an X-Inland regatta in their 

life. These young sailors are incredibly talented and 

they will always carry with them the fun they have at 

regattas. They are the foundation of the Inland 

Association. 

History was in the making: two brothers winning the 

Champs but not to be outdone, Minnetonka made 

history with 525 participants at the Friday night 

dinner. Chairpersons Cathy Allen, Sharon Garber and 

Betsy Hannaford provided a first-rate, flawless event.

Lake Beulah was the host for the ILYA Optimist 

Championships. Taking a note from Minnetonka, 

Beulah served up the same hot weather but with a 

bit more wind to make the heat index lower. The 

air-conditioned clubhouse was a treat. They did a 

fabulous job welcoming everyone with their famous 

hospitality, great fun and non-stop fun. The raffle 

was huge with what seemed like an endless supply 

of gifts. Thanks to USODA for great raffle items 

which added to the near 100 raffle items gathered 

by Susan Clayton for great gifts for the kids.The 

sailors truly enjoyed the baggo game, graciously 

donated by the Kiernan family. Beulah served 350 

lunches and over 200 dinners to Opti sailors and families on day one. 

Minnetonka's Dave Garber took it upon himself to fix pancakes and sausage for the sailors on Wednesday 

morning. Okauchee's Tim Kay also helped him. Regatta chairmen Candace Porter, Molly and Marty Barr, 

and Cathy and Mark Kiernan put on an incredible event. 

The Green Fleet had a perfect day . Although hot, 

the day was dominated by light. steady winds. At 

end of day the 42-46 sailors (it was a moving target 

in that fleet with fear, illness and cancellation) had 

finished 4 races.

Ford Johnstone won all the races handily. In the first 

race, Will Komas gave him a run for his money. Eric 

Zettlemoyer sailed his very best to finish third. 

The second race saw Alex Vasiliou in second, with 

Gregory Westin pushing him in third. 

Following a break for lunch and relaxation in the 

club, the fleet ventured out again. Ford continued his 

winning ways as the wind remained a steady light 

breeze. Will Komas bounced back for second place 

honors. Gregory Westin sailed consistently again to 

take a trey. 

The final race of the day again belonged to Ford. 

William Curtiss sailed to a fine second place finish, 

and Will Komas rounded out a very consistent series 

with a three. 

Ford Johnstone was crowned the Green Fleet 

Champion. Ford is from Lake Forest area but trains 

with ILYA sailors at Beulah. Beulah’s Will Komas 

was second, Chicago’s William Curtiss (who also 

trains with ILYA sailors) was third. Beulah’s Gregory 

Westin was fourth and Pine’s Alec Bischoff 

(grandson of judge Terry) was fifth. Race Committee 

Suzi Reese and Leslie Barkow had their hands full 

with medium wind, varying skill levels and a huge 

fleet. Sailing school instructors were invaluable on 

the course assisting sailors from 14 lakes.

The Championship fleet was a robust 73 

sailors, chock full of talent. This regatta 

also acts as a qualifier for the USODA 

Team Trials. Sailors qualify for the right 

to attend the USODA regatta in the 

Spring that selects the national and 

international teams for the year. 

The Red, White and Blue fleet sailed four 

races the first day under the watchful eye 

of PRO Mike Sherin. George 

Kutschenreuter exploded out of the gate 

to win the first race. Chicago's Alex 

Curtis, who trains in Wisconsin, took 

second place honors. Natalie Kay had 

her best result in third place. 

The second race had Connor Trepton 

taking the gun, with Alex Curtis 

remaining consistent in second. Charlie 

Davenport got going to post a third 

place finish. 

Following a well-deserved lunch break 

from the heat, the fleet sailed the last two 

races of the day. Connor Trepton again 

displayed his winning form, running 

away with the race. Alex Curtis kept 

pace, notching another two. George 

Kutschenreuter returned to form in 

third position.

The Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association 

(MISSA) kicked off the Fall season with the annual 

Sheridan Shore Kick Off Classic. Sailed on Lake 

Michigan out of Wilmette, the competitors were 

presented with wet and howling wind conditions. 

Faced with these challenging sea conditions, only the 

Laser Radial fleet completed a series. Conditions to 

his liking, Loyola Academy’s Clifford Porter took the 

title over Will Howard of Lake Forest. 

Next up was the Jimmy Talbot Memorial Regatta 

hosted by Chicago Yacht Club on Lake Michigan. 

Despite flying from Boston to Chicago on the 

morning of the event, Tabor Academy’s Gordon 

Lamphere had enough energy to place third in the 

Laser Full Rig Division. Anne Haeger of Lake 

Forest took Laser Radial honors for the second 

consecutive year, this time over Maggie Shea of New 

Trier. In the HS 420 class, Stephanie Hudson of New 

Trier took the A Division title over Latin’s Nate Swift 

and Will Haeger of Lake Forest. Latin took the team 

title over New Trier and Walter Payton.

The MISSA Cressy Qualifier was hosted by Crescent 

Sail Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Thirty 

three (33) sailors competed for two spots at the high 

school single handed national championships in very 

light and variable wind conditions. The Full Rig 

division was won by Brady Savage of Grosse Pointe 

North (MI) over Minnetonka’s Josh Garber and 

Wayzata’s Bill Siemers. In the Radial division, Lake 

Forest’s Anne Haeger won three of the five races 

sailed, taking first place over Stephanie Roble of 

Catholic Central (WI) and Gavin Potts of Hill-Murray 

(MI). Weeks later, Savage finished 12 th while Haeger 

finished 13 th at the Cressy Nationals hosted by Indian 

Harbor Yacht Club in Connecticut. Gordon Lamphere, 

representing NESSA, finished 16 th .

The Grosse Ile Invitational received a record turnout 

of 70 sailors representing nine MISSA schools who 

traveled from as far away as Erie, PA and Evanston, 

IL. Grosse Ile Yacht Club hosted the fourteen 420 

teams and six Laser sailors, double the previous high 

turnout for the regatta. Latin (IL) took the 420 team 

title over Loyola Academy and Grosse Ile.

Blustery northwest winds welcomed a record 142 

sailors to the Lake Forest Sailing Center on the 

western shore of Lake Michigan for the 2006 

Halloween Spectacular Regatta. The event included 

sailors from Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio 

representing ten high schools competing in Laser 

Radials and 420s. On the first day, howling winds 

gusting up to 50 knots from the North kept the sailors 

on shore where Clifford Porter of Loyola Academy 

won the costume contest. 

Following a change of the clocks for daylight savings 

time, the sailors discovered that the wind speeds had 

dropped to a more manageable westerly 10 to 15 

knots. On this day, Will Haeger/Ian Schappe of Lake 

Forest (IL), Loyola’s (IL) Clifford Porter/Leah 

Schaller, and Big Foot’s (WI) Coye Harrett/Katie 

Fideler sailed to race wins, but the top teams were 

more consistent as Grosse Ile (MI), Latin (IL), and St 

Ignatius (IL) placed one, two, and three in the overall 

team competition. 

Geneva Lake Sailing School hosted the Great Oaks 

Qualifier. Strong northwesterly winds and cold 

temperatures didn’t daunt team from the International 

School of Minnesota (ISM) as they captured first 

place. ISM competed against nine other high school 

sailing teams from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and 

Wisconsin in a 10-race, round robin regatta format. 

Representing ISM was the all-junior team of Erik 

Bowers and Sydney Morical, who fought 25 mph 

Temperature in the low 40’s, winds gusting over 25 

knots from the north, red hot action on the waters of 

Chicago’s Monroe Harbor! Twenty three teams 

completed in MISSA’s Great Lakes Championship 

hosted by Chicago Yacht Club’s Monroe Station. 

Representing fifteen high schools from Illinois, 

Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio, over 120 

sailors competed in a three fleet format, with A and B

The Deephavern Centennial Regatta was held on 

Lake Minntonka on July 7th. The day started out 

with a calm breeze and then picked up steadily 

throughout the whole day. A record 90 boats 

participated at the TC Youth sailing event and 

everyone had a great time. Some Opti sailors used 

the day as a warm up for the USODA Upper Midwest 

regatta, which started the next day. The 32 Green 

Fleeters had a lot of fun and had to sail in after the 

second race because the wind picked up too much. 

Once we calmed the sailors down all the Opti’s 

followed Dan Crear like little ducks and sailed in 

Carson’s Bay, which was protected, from the big 

wind. The top three finishers in the Green Fleet were 

1. Marissa Bernstein of Minnetonka YC, 2. Cole Lee 

of White Bear Yacht Club and 3. Connor Slocum of 

Minnetonka YC. 

The 29 boat Championship Fleet was very 

competitive with some close finishing races. The top 

three Overall Opti’s were 1. Charlie Burton of 

Minnetonka YC, 2. Robbie Seltzer-Schultz of 

Calhoun YC, 3. Harrison Burton of Minnetonka YC. 

I don’t know which was better—the volleyball, 

swimming, or sailing! 

The 420 fleet had 15 boats, the Laser fleet had 4 - 4.7’s, 8 

Radials and 6 Full Rigs. The big kids were exhausted after 

sailing all day in the winds. The 420 sailors had some 

expert help from Molly O’Brien, a guest coach from the 

Navy collegiate sailing team. This regatta has a special 

tradition. The winners of the double-handed (420) and 

singled handed (Opti) Fleets have their names engraved on 

a special plague, which hangs at the yacht club year round. 

The winners this year were Charlie Burton for Singlehanded 

and Matt Thompson and crew for double-handed.

The city of Deephaven also honors the winning sailors.

Laser Radial title. Anne Franzene of Beulah won 

the last two races to place second. Will Howard of

highly competitive fleet.

In A Division, the competition was very strong as 

seven different teams won races. Grosse Pointe 

North (MI) (GPN)’s Charlie Trost and crew Christie 

Listwan got off to a strong start by taking the first of 

their two wins in race one. Black River (MI)’s Alex 

Kiss/Chloe Beigley followed by outlasting the 

combined Edina/Hill (MN) team of Brady 

Hutchinson/Anne Tigelaar in race two. Later, the 

Lake Forest freshman tandem of Will Haeger/Ian 

Schappe won five races while New Trier’s Stephanie 

Hudson/Gardner Yost and Minnetonka’s Harrison 

Burton/Tess Porter each won two races. Will 

Starshak/Mary Duncan of St Ignatius and Nate Swift/ 

Emma Rovit of Latin also sailed to race wins. 

Overall, Lake Forest’s Haeger/Schappe crew, took 

the A division title with 65 points, defeating 

Stephanie Hudson/Gardner Yost of New Trier by ten. 

St Ignatius placed third with 90 points. 

Minnetonka’s Mike Hanson and Melissa Kennedy 

finished fourth with 102 points while International 

School of Minnesota’s Chris Loew-Blosser / Auriane 

Muse finished fifth with 116. 

In B division, Walter Payton’s crew took top honors 

over GPN’s team. GPN won two races as did St 

Ignatius’ Michael Lee/Molly Condon who finished 

third. New Trier also won two races, finishing fourth 

overall. Single race winners included Grosse Ile, 

Grosse Pointe South, Latin, and Minnetonka’s Brady 

Solum / Phil Holt. 

Finally, Junior Erik Bowers of International School 

of Minnesota dominated the Laser Full Rig division, 

winning seven of 14 races, en route to a 22 point win 

over GPN senior Brady Savage. Savage, who had 

won the MISSA Cressy Qualifier, finished with two 

firsts and three seconds. Josh Garber of Minnetonka 

High School (MN) also won two races while placing 

third with 77 points 

Overall, Grosse Pointe North’s team total of 239 

points bested six time defending champion New Trier’s 

248 to take the title of Great Lakes Champion by nine 

points. St Ignatius finished third with 265 followed by 

Minnetonka with 290 and Latin with 331.
