PAGE 56 SCOW SLANTS FALL/WINTER 2006 ○ reported by Sharon Garber The USODA Upper Midwest Championships were held on Lake Minnetonka on July 8th and 9th. We had beautiful weather for the whole regatta. The winds were consistently around 8-12 Miles per hour. The sun was shining and temperatures were around 80- 85 degrees. The sailors and families all had a great time sailing, swimming and playing games on the Island of the Minnetonka Yacht Club. The big tent was a great place to gather while eating with all our Opti friends. ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ sportsmanship. The top three finishers of the Championship fleet were 1. Connor Trepton, 2. Will Holz, and 3. Hunter Johnston. Being a qualifier for the USODA Team Trials, which are to be held May 3-5, 2007 in Florida, made this a very My personal mission with the regatta was for the kids to have fun, sail and eat well. I also wanted to teach parents and kids that USODA (United States Optimist Dingy Association) was just a name of an organization and nothing to be nervous about when it came to our kids and sailing. We had some competition in the Midwest on the same weekend for Opti sailing and were very pleased with 31 Red, White & Blue Fleet sailors and 16 Green Fleeter Sailors. Some of the Green Fleeters had just come out of the area sailing schools' learn-to-race classes and had a great time. With the coaches help they learned a lot. These kids became inspired to do more races throughout the rest of the season. The top three finishers for Green Fleet were 1. Ford Johnstone, 2. Trevor Trepton and 3 Marissa Bernstein. The Championship Fleet was very competitive and they all had a good time while showing great Talk about close racing! Photo supplied by Sharon Garber exciting event. The kids all became excited as we announced who the kids were who would be going to Team Trials. The twelve sailors who qualified to go to Team Trials are Connor and Parker Trepton from Lac LaBelle, Harrison Burton, Addy Ferguson, Lucas Vroege, Griffin Robillard, Ian Solum, Declan Armour, Charlie Burton, and Ben Garber all from Minnetonka, Eddie Cox from White Bear and Adam Voortman from Chicago. Congratulations to all the sailors who qualified and we wish them well at Team Trials. Ford Johnstone (Beulah), Trevor Trepton (LaBelle), and their families made the trip to Sarasota, Florida in August to compete in the Green Fleet Nationals. With winds ranging from 5 to 8 knots, the Inland representatives competed in a fleet of 65 sailors. With coach Nicole Hudson looking on, Ford and Trevor both got off to slow starts in the first race, finishing 25 th and 34 th , respectively. Beginning with the second race, the two young skippers became more comfortable starting in the large fleet and finished in the top ten in each of their next three races. by Jeff Hudson After ten races, Trevor turned out to be the most consistent competitor with only two finishes out of the top ten. While he did not win a race, he earned the title of USODA National Green Fleet Champion. In the meantime, Ford finished fifth, just ten points behind his friend. Also competing from the Midwest were William Curtiss, Hannah Danly, and Maggie Holz. Look for these sailors next summer on Minnetonka which hosts the 2007 USODA National Championships.
FALL/WINTER 2006 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 57 The No Tears West regatta was held on July 7th at Clear Lake Yacht Club. The day started with a surprise visit from Commodore Tom Hodgson! Eighteen Optis off to the races early at 9:30 as winds were expected to build—one race finished before Head PRO Mark Tesar wisely called the second as gusts to 18 mph were recorded. In for lunch the kids enjoyed a great meal and prize drawing as races were called for the day. Our thanks to Nancy Lundeen for organizing a great event. Race results: Senior Fleet 1. Anne Tesar 2. One’s image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are “limbs,” therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression: "Okay, but it will cost you an arm and a leg" As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year! (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. The wigs couldn’t be washed, so to clean them they could carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy,hence the term “big wig.” Today we often use the term “here comes the Big Wig” because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. Needless to say, personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee’s wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman’s face she was told “mind your own bee’s wax.” Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term “crack a smile.” Also, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt and therefore the expression “losing face.
