PAGE 68 SCOW SLANTS FALL/WINTER 2006 George Kutsch and Michael Barr lead the pack to the gun again in Race #3. Michael Lee and Matt Cain started their push taking a second. Drake Lundeen and Barak Brakke, Z-7, sailed a fabulous race to be third. The final race of the day belonged to Chris Columbe and Dillon Lacke, B-93. Michael Lee and Matt Cain have now hit their stride finishing second again. George and Michael finished up a stellar day with third place honors. They seemed to have a big lead after the end of racing, but throwouts could really scramble things. The final day was hot and breezy and belonged to Robbie Allen and Jack Carlson. They won the first race of the day going away. George Kutschenreuter and Michael Barr stayed close with a second. Michael Cain continued his consistent ways with a third. The last race of the regatta was again taken by Robbie and Jack, In this race, Michael Cain and Matt Cain fought for a second, sneaking into second overall by one point. Jessica Lutrell and Ellen Poole, D-7, sailed like champions in third place. The junior championship belonged to George Kutschenreuter and Michael Barr. FALL/WINTER 2006 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 69 “Forty years ago today, “ says Will Norris, “this great lake played a role in my life. No matter where you sail East Coast, SE or West Coast, Minnetonka is the best. Thank you, my friends in Minnesota.” And with those words the ILYA X Champs of 2006 were recorded in the history books. Will Norris, uncle to Joe, George and Charlie Kutschenreuter, and past ILYA X Champion presented the trophies at an emotional awards ceremony. Commodore Tom Hodgson spoke of this as a time for brothers, for family and for friends. The 30 teams presented with awards were comprised of many brother or sibling combinations. The photo above shows just that: Dad Jim Kutschenreuter was presented with the Kate Goes Sportsmanship Award. “Kutsch” was seen on land and water assisting all the sailors with taxiing, water supply and was “last man standing” in the continued heat at the launch assisting the boats at Carson’s Bay. Commodore Hodgson presented 15th to 2nd in both fleets and then for the finale called up “Uncle Will” to the applause of the parents who had not seen Will in decades. The Kutschenreuter boys thanked the appropriate entities but George concluded the presentation by thanking his grandmother, Nan Norris, “without whom this would not happen”. Thumping his heart, saying he could feel her here, he proclaimed, “I love you.” A touching moment which exemplifies all the ILYA is and who we are—families, old dear friends and new friends we meet at each event. listing of all the volunteers. Applause and cheers as Cathy Allen presented her crew with bags for the yearlong work to prepare for this event. And, speaking of accolades, the crowd gave Sally Barkow a standing ovation as she appeared numerous times throughout the regatta. Sally and Matt Prange presented at a parents meeting on Wednesday night; Sally presided at a cocktail party of the MYC Yngling fleet, lastly she handed out the Senior highest ranking female award to Okauchee’s Shannon and Bridget Smith. The Junior Fleet female trophy went to local Addy Ferguson with Hayley Jewett as crew. Kutschs' Rule! The Race Commitee of both fleets did a fabulous job of running 6 races. Tom Hodgson, Chip Mann, and Terry Bischoff really showed that they are truly all about the kids. In the Senior Fleet there were 6 different race winners!! Hopefully everyone at some point will have the opportunity to spectate an X-Inland regatta in their life. These young sailors are incredibly talented and they will always carry with them the fun they have at regattas. They are the foundation of the Inland Association. History was in the making: two brothers winning the Champs but not to be outdone, Minnetonka made history with 525 participants at the Friday night dinner. Chairpersons Cathy Allen, Sharon Garber and Betsy Hannaford provided a first-rate, flawless event. Never has a crowd stood and applauded during the Eddie Cox is powered up and moving.
