Valk specializes in surfaces, nubby from scaling
paint. A brilliant cerulean blue in Taza V protects
the wood of a Moroccan door repainted many times
(page 17.)
Sketching in parks, estate gardens, old cities and
from memory, Valk chooses images from global
travels (East Africa, South America, Eastern and
Western Europe), then constructs the paintings in
the studio. Born in Berlin, Valk studied and lived in
the Netherlands before moving to DC.
"I am not interested in telling the viewer what to
see. I prefer to leave the paintings open to individual
emotional responses," she says.
