The Cluster Action Teams provided a <strong>for</strong>um to brainstorm,<br />

plan and execute a strategic plan in a collaborative manner.<br />

A Strategy Board consisting of approximately 50 well-connected<br />

business, government, academic and civic leaders<br />

met regularly to provide guidance to the action teams’<br />

work and ensure plans were linked to existing resources<br />

and initiatives.<br />

Throughout the 18-months of strategic planning, <strong>Opportunity</strong><strong>Newark</strong><br />

participants reviewed a considerable amount<br />

of data to in<strong>for</strong>m the recommendations described in the<br />

action plans found in the subsequent pages.<br />

Transportation, Logistics<br />

& Distribution Services<br />

<strong>Newark</strong>’s port, as the largest on the East Coast and the 3rd<br />

largest in the country, is an important competitive advantage<br />

<strong>for</strong> the city. Foreign trade coming through the port<br />

is expected to double by 2020, creating many business<br />

and employment opportunities. To prepare <strong>for</strong> this growth,<br />

port leaders have planned more than $1 billion in investments<br />

that will increase port capacity and accommodate<br />

large freighters. The Portfields and Portways initiatives<br />

are already rehabilitating lands in the port area in order to<br />
