Geographical expansion, innovation,
and selective acquisitions
In 2010, Sulzer proved its ability to adapt
quickly to changed market conditions.
The company achieved a strong doubledigit
profitability with a return on sales
of 12.8% and an improved return on capital
employed of 28.1%. Sales (CHF 3.2
billion, –5.0%) were still impacted by the
notable decrease in order intake in 2009.
Net income increased by 11% to
CHF 300.4 million, corresponding to
earnings per share (EPS) of CHF 8.92.
Sulzer’s global presence was further
strengthened as major investments in the
emerging markets went into operation.
The service business was substantially
enhanced through acquisitions. Based
on a healthy balance sheet, Sulzer continues
to assess additional acquisitions.
For 2011, Sulzer expects a moderate
growth in order intake and increased
sales on an adjusted basis. The divisional
operating income is anticipated to be
moderately higher.
Sulzer to strengthen tower field
service activities in Canada
On February 11, 2011, Sulzer Chemtech acquired the company Black Magic Crew
Ltd. in Canada. Black Magic Crew’s annual sales is approximately CAD 1.5 million.
All staff, including the former owner, will be retained after the acquisition. With
this acquisition, Sulzer Chemtech will enhance its competitiveness of the tower field
service activities in Canada by adding the competencies of a local contractor with
a skilled crew.
Black Magic Crew Ltd. is a recognized specialist in the installation of tower
internals and general maintenance of gas and ethanol plants as well as refineries;
it is mainly active in the Alberta region. The
company is listed as an aboriginal-owned corporation
with registered and records offices
in Turner Valley, Alberta. Sulzer Chemtech, a
global market leader for components and
services for separation, mixing, and cartridge
technology, is present in all significant markets
in the areas of sales, engineering, production,
and customer support. As a main supplier of
mass transfer components and provider of
tower field services, it is Sulzer Chemtech’s
strategy to strengthen its ability to supply
installation and maintenance services to its
customers in all geographic regions.
