DMV TITLE AND REGISTRATION HANDBOOK Chapter K: Damaged/Totaled Vehicles Driver and Motor Vehicle Services, Form 735-270, must be submitted with the salvage title. (See Chapter Q on how to complete the Form 735-270.) If the vehicle is repaired, rebuilt, or if the frame or unibody is used in constructing another vehicle, the salvage title should be surrendered in support of an application for certificate of title on the assembled or reconstructed vehicle. Information on how to apply for an assembled, reconstructed or replica vehicle title appears later in this chapter. Oregon began issuing Salvage Title Certificates on January 2, 1992. There are several situations in which a salvage title must be applied for: • When the vehicle has been wrecked, dismantled, disassembled or substantially altered (ORS 819.010) and you intend to rebuild or repair the vehicle. • When the vehicle has been totaled and the title is required to be surrendered (ORS 819.012 or 819.014). • When you buy an abandoned vehicle sold under ORS 819.220 (appraised at $1,000 or less but more than $500). You do not need to apply for a salvage title if you do not intend to rebuild or repair the vehicle, to transfer the vehicle, or to use the frame or unibody for repairing or constructing another vehicle. If the vehicle has been repaired or is otherwise operable before a salvage title can be applied for, a regular Oregon title may be applied for following the guidelines found later in this chapter regarding assembled, reconstructed and replica vehicles. Vehicle Types Subject To Salvage Titles All vehicle types required to be titled or registered in this state, if operated over the highways, snowmobiles, manufactured structures (except those exempt from title under ORS 820.510), and any other vehicle that has been issued a certificate of title by DMV or some other jurisdiction are subject to salvage titles. Registration/Security Interests Any existing registration for a vehicle is canceled when a salvage title is issued. Registration is not allowed and the vehicle may not be operated on the highways of Oregon until an application for certificate of title on the assembled, reconstructed, or replica vehicle is applied for. No security interest information is shown on a salvage title. Oregon Salvage Title Certificate The most current version of the Oregon Salvage Title is dated January 2004. The significant change with this version is that there is now only one reassignment area on the back of the form. K-6 7/1/05
