‘Iran supports peace plans for Syria
but with conditions’
TEHRAN, March 22 (MNA) - Iran supports
any initiative that would help resolve the
Syrian crisis through diplomatic channels
without violating the country’s
sovereignty, Iranian Foreign Ministry
spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said
on Thursday.
Mehmanparast made the remarks in
reference to the statement that the
United Nations Security Council approved
on Wednesday, which supports former
secretary general Kofi Annan’s peacemaking
efforts in Syria and the delivery of
aid for victims of the violence.
In the statement, the Security Council
called on both the government and the
opposition to work “in good faith” with
Annan, who met with Syrian President
Bashar al-Assad in Damascus this month in
his role as a special envoy for the UN and
the Arab League, according to Los Angeles
Times.
Mehmanparast said, “The Islamic Republic
of Iran once again emphasizes that the
current situation in Syria should be
resolved through diplomatic means and
any hasty and interventionist measure
should be avoided and announces that it
will cooperate in carrying out any plan
which does not violate the country’s
sovereignty, takes into account demands
of the Syrian people and the
implementation of the announced reform
process by the president and officials of
the Syrian government, helps restore
stability and peace in the country, and
paves the way for national dialogue in the
country.”
