The most frequent causes of injury hospitalizations are combined over a<br />

five-year period. The most frequent cause of injury hospitalization was<br />

adverse effects, which also included adverse events in a hospital setting<br />

such as medication adverse reactions. Other major causes of injury<br />

hospitalization and their rates per 100,000 in 1999 were:<br />

• Falls with a rate of 366.8.<br />

• Motor vehicle collisions with a rate of 78.4.<br />

• Parasuicide (suicide attempts) with a rate of 76.7.<br />

Other causes included assault, other transportation-related injuries,<br />

overexertion/strenuous movements, late effects of injuries, struck by<br />

objects/person, and poisonings.<br />
