7.16 COMMENTS Ward Population: The population sizes for the fourteen wards vary from 1 708 people in ward 13 to 12 422 people in ward 12. Although ward 35 has a population greater than that of ward 13 it has a critical deficient of infrastructure, although ward 13 has less infrastructure as compared to other wards, indicating the relationship that exists between infrastructural distribution and the population. Health Facilities: All the clinics do not have resident doctors. The constituency only have 2 rural hospitals that offer services that are offered by clinics of which none has a resident doctor, and the residents have to look elsewhere for specialised treatments. Education: The constituency does not have even a single ‘A’ Level school. All the secondary schools in the constituency offer classes up to ‘O’ Level therefore forcing the pupils to travel to other schools to access advanced secondary education. Farms: The constituency is characterised by high commercial farming activity, with 35% of the wards being agricultural zones and comprising of farms. 7.17 The Recommendations There is need for: -
• The beefing up of nurses in all clinics to ensure that every person that needs their services is attended to in time. • The establishment of ‘A’ level schools in the constituency to ensure that pupils go further than the ordinary level. There is also a need to establish secondary schools in ward 35, and a primary school in ward 35 to ensure government policy of near and accessible education. • The Increase in the number of operational self-reliance projects in almost all wards to ensure that the residents help themselves in reducing poverty, in as much as economically empowering the youth and women. Most of the projects in the constituency are however owned by women while the greater number is comprised by groups and cooperatives. • Gender mainstreaming in local governance. Of the 14 wards, only 2 wards, i.e. wards 15 and 26 have a female councillor, depicting that women are still lagging behind in decision making. They constitute only 14% of the total ward seats.
