2-3-lobed (lobes divaricate, acuminate, the sinus shallowly lunate<br />

or wanting, i.e., upper margin of leaf truncate, often undulate),<br />

variable in shape, ranging from 6.5 cm. long and 9 cm. wide to 3 cm.<br />

long and 10 cm. wide, rounded or subtruncate at base,<br />

3-nerved,<br />

ocellate, coriaceous, glabrous and lustrous above, glabrous or slightly<br />

puberulent beneath; peduncles solitary or in pairs, 0.5 to 1.5 cm.<br />

long, articulate near middle; bracts setaceous, about 3 mm. long,<br />

borne below middle of peduncle; flowers up to 5 cm. wide; sepals<br />

broadly lance-oblong, 1.5 to 2 cm. long, 7 to 8 mm. wide at base,<br />

obtuse, subcoriaceous, yellowish green; petals oblong, 1 to 1.2 cm.<br />

long, about 4 mm. wide at base, obtuse, membranous, yellowish<br />

green; corona filaments in 2 series, the outer narrowly liguliform,<br />

yellowish green, united at base into a broad, greenish white membrane,<br />

the free filaments 1 to 1.5 cm. long, the inner filaments capillary,<br />

3 to 4 mm. long, arising about 2 mm. from the free portion of the<br />

outer series, greenish white; operculum membranous, closely plicate,<br />

lobulate, white; limen annular; gynophore purple; ovary ovoid,<br />

glabrous; fruit subglobose, 1 to 1.5 cm. in diameter; seeds obovate,<br />

about 4 mm. long and 2 mm. wide, transversely sulcate.<br />
