axillary branches, the leaves frequently wanting so that the inflorescence<br />
appears racemose; bracts similar to the stipules, broadly cordate,<br />
10 mm. long, 8 mm. wide, obtuse, reddish or violet-purple, glabrate<br />
without, pilosulous within; flowers about 3 cm. wide; sepals linearoblong,<br />
1.5 cm. long, 3 mm. wide, very densely pilose without, glabrate<br />
within; petals linear-oblong, 8 mm. long, obtuse, pink; corona<br />
filaments filiform, spotted with purple, in 2 series, the outer filaments<br />
6 to 8 mm. long, the inner 2 mm. long, capitellate; operculum<br />
about 2 mm. high, closely plicate, dark red below, pale yellow above,<br />
denticulate, slightly incurved; limen erect, minutely pulverulent<br />
above; ovary globose, densely white-pilose; fruit globose, about<br />
1 cm. wide, transversely sulcate with 6 to 8 ridges, the ridges rugulose,<br />
the axis slightly curved.<br />

Because of a general similarity in the shape of the leaves, this<br />
species might be confused with P. sexflora. The large bracts, varying<br />
from bright red to violet-purple, the nonfasciculate inflorescence,<br />
and the larger flowers readily distinguish it from that, however.<br />
