Plant densely and softly pilosulous throughout; stem subangular,<br />

striate; stipules setaceous, 2 to 3 mm. long, soon deciduous; petioles<br />

up to 1 cm. long, usually bearing 2 minute, sessile glands at apex;<br />

leaves oblong or oblong-lanceolate, 3.5 to 10 cm. long, 1.5 to 4 cm.<br />

wide, unlobed or rarely slightly undulate-lobed near middle, obtuse<br />

or rarely subacute at apex, rounded at base, 1-nerved, reticulateveined,<br />

subcoriaceous, often lustrous above; flowers in fascicles of 3<br />

(rarely 2) to 6, 1.5 cm. wide, or less, the peduncles slender, 0.5 to<br />

1 cm. long, articulate at middle; bracts linear-subulate, about 2 mm.<br />

long, borne near base of peduncle; calyx patelliform, strongly sulcate;<br />

sepals linear-lanceolate, 3 to 4 mm. long, 1 to 1.5 mm. wide, acutish;<br />

petals narrowly linear, 2 to 3 mm. long, less than 1 mm. wide, white;<br />

corona filaments in 2 series, the outer filiform, 2 to 3 mm. long, the<br />

inner setaceous, 1 mm. long, or less; operculum membranous, slightly<br />

plicate, less than 1 mm. high, incurved; limen annular, closely<br />

encircling the ovary; ovary globose, sessile, glabrous; fruit globose,<br />

5 to 8 mm. in diameter, dark blue, glabrous; seeds oblong, about<br />

3 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, transversely 6-8-grooved, the ridges<br />

rugulose.<br />
