1. How would you suggest the federal government improve the way they uphold First<br />
Nations Rights to education?<br />
• Honour the spirit and intent of the Treaties and Crown obligations;<br />
• Develop transparent working relationships and consultation processes that respect First Nation<br />
jurisdiction over education;<br />
• Move away from unilateral/authoritative/oppressive policies;<br />
• Respect First Nation holistic vision of lifelong learning and decision-making processes;<br />
• Provide adequate and equitable funding <strong>for</strong> First Nations education.<br />
2. What would make the First Nation education system here in Ontario function more<br />
effectively?<br />
• Emphasize language, culture and experiential learning;<br />
• Exercise the political will to follow our own path;<br />
• Set our own standards;<br />
• Understand and articulate what makes sense <strong>for</strong> us;<br />
• Develop a vision statement on what our education system looks like;<br />
• Provide our own professional development;<br />
• Develop research institutions with our own scholars;<br />
• Focus on capacity building;<br />
• Celebrate and share best practices;<br />
• Support a unified ef<strong>for</strong>t to create a system complete with second and third level supports;<br />
• Create partnerships that support students both on and off-reserve.<br />
3. What are the barriers to achieving a superior education system <strong>for</strong> First Nations in<br />
Ontario/in your community?<br />
• The base funding provision is too low (BOFF) with too much competitive funding;<br />
• Foreign definition of student success;<br />
• Lack of a positive attitude towards education – intergenerational effects of residential school<br />
system;<br />
• Lack of collective thinking and knowledge sharing;<br />
• Lack of access to new technology;<br />
• Inadequate libraries and infrastructure;<br />
• Underfunding inhibits capacity building;<br />
