He has won a total of 10 external research grants from the Research Grants Council, the Innovation Technology Fund and the Research Fund for Control of Infectious Disease. Under his directorship, the Research Centre for Building Environmental Engineering has won a total number of 40 Competitive Earmarked Research Grants in the past five years. He has produced more than 200 publications and over 20 invited papers and presentations, winning the recognition of both local industry and international organisations and numerous awards in technical publications and technology innovations. He is currently serving as the Chair of the Departmental Research Committee of Building Services Engineering, developing the research strength of the Department in addressing pressing society needs in sustainable building technologies. He obtained his PhD in 1993 at the University of Wales, College of Cardiff, UK. He has been involved in renewable energy research and development projects throughout his career in the Chinese mainland, Britain and Hong Kong including geothermal, solar, and wind energy resources. Prof. Yang is now leading the Renewable Energy Research Group at the Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has published over 150 papers and two books. Since he joined the Department in 1995, he has been working on 52 research and development/consultancy projects as a Principal Investigator with a total funding of more than $20 million. He intends to develop the Renewable Energy Research Group into a flagship group of the Faculty of Construction and Environment, and a leading worldwide research and development organisation. He finished his PhD specialising in acoustics and fluid dynamics from the same department in 1992. He joined the Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in July 1993. He is currently the leader of the Building Acoustics and Vibration research group in the Department and is member of a number of research centres in the University. He is also active in organising acoustics conferences and providing services to the industry. Prof. Tang has published over 75 research papers in SCI journals devoted to the science and applications of fluid mechanics, acoustics and mathematics. He has also completed over 40 consultancy projects. He acquired his MSc degree in 1987 and PhD degree in 1993, was awarded a Dufton Silver Medal by CIBSE in 1997 and served the Northumbria University as a Visiting Professor from 2000 to 2003. He is currently a Professor of the Department of Building Services Engineering, a Fellow of CIBSE, a member of the International Advisory Board of BSER&T, an Associate Editor of Indoor and Built Environment, and a member of the Appeal Tribunal Panel (Buildings Ordinance). In recognition of his research achievements, he was awarded a higher doctorate degree of Doctor of Engineering by the Northumbria University in January 2009. 18

In addition to his undergraduate study in quantity surveying, he also got his Master Degrees in Architecture and Mechanical Engineering, and a Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering. Since joining the Department of Building Services Engineering in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1997, he has contributed to the development of a research area in building services and environmental engineering and economics. Dr Chau is actively involved in government consultancy projects such as the study on Specification and Market Structure of the Significant Building Services Materials for Hong Kong Housing Authority Projects, Consultancy Study on Life Cycle Energy Analysis of Building Construction. He has a BSc degree from The University of Hong Kong, a MSc degree from the University of Reading and a PhD degree from the University of Loughborough. He is a member of HKIE and CIBSE. He is currently a Board member of CIE (Hong Kong), a regional member of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). Currently, his major teaching is on lighting systems and lighting engineering. His current research interest is on building lighting systems and daylighting. He is the Chairman of the Departmental Learning and Teaching Committee. Dr Chen joined the Department of Building Services Engineering in 2002 and is now an Associate Professor. Before joining the Department, he was a researcher in the CAS and a system engineer at Morimatsu Ltd in Japan. He is now in charge of teaching subjects in the area of electric services. His research/consultancy interest is in the areas of lightning detection & protection, building electrical services, EMC, and power quality. He has been engaged in more than 30 various research projects and published 90 more journal and conference papers. He is the recipient of Science and Technology Progress Award by CAS in 1993 and that by the Headquarter of People’s Liberation Army in 1995; He is also the recipient of Best Presentation Award of 6th Asia Lightning Protection Forum in 2009 and Dean’s award for excellence in External Competitive Research Funding in 2011. Currently he is an Associate Professor with the Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests include power quality in power distribution systems, electromagnetic compatibility and lightning and surge protection in railway and buildings. He has been awarded more than six external research grants from the Research Grants Council, and made significant contributions in the areas of modeling and simulation of electromagnetic environments in buildings. He has produced more than 100 publications. Dr Du is an active EMC consultant, and has completed more than 50 projects related to electrical systems in buildings and railway. He is a member of IET, and is a chartered engineer. 19
