The Department <strong>of</strong> Build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Real Estate is one <strong>of</strong> the oldest departments <strong>in</strong> the University <strong>and</strong> has been<br />

produc<strong>in</strong>g graduates for the construction, real estate, <strong>and</strong> related <strong>in</strong>dustries for over 70 years. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time we<br />

have helped develop the <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>and</strong> services <strong>of</strong> the region. Many <strong>of</strong> our graduates now occupy important<br />

positions <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. They represent an important group <strong>of</strong> people contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the growth <strong>and</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hong Kong. Our aim is to provide programmes that are application oriented, <strong>and</strong> produce graduates who can<br />

apply theories to practice. To ensure this, our research is <strong>of</strong> an applied nature relevant to <strong>in</strong>dustrial, commercial <strong>and</strong><br />

community needs. We have established <strong>and</strong> will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to develop dedicated partnerships with bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

<strong>and</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essions. We have an excellent reputation worldwide <strong>and</strong> are work<strong>in</strong>g to extend our l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>in</strong>ternationally.<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g Services Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has an enviable reputation for lead<strong>in</strong>g edge<br />

research. We comb<strong>in</strong>e academic excellence with open-m<strong>in</strong>dednees that responds to community needs <strong>and</strong> enables<br />

us to quickly put together multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary teams to meet the chang<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> society<br />

at large. Over the years our staff have developed expertise across a wide range <strong>of</strong> BSE topics. These specialisms<br />

<strong>in</strong>form both their teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> the wider developments tak<strong>in</strong>g place with<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>and</strong> the workplace. Our staff’s<br />

research credentials mean we are able to respond quickly to issues <strong>of</strong> the moment, such as the SARS outbreak, <strong>and</strong><br />

make a mean<strong>in</strong>gful contribution to high priority concerns. We have, <strong>in</strong> particular, two research centres <strong>of</strong> excellence<br />

- the <strong>Research</strong> Centre for Fire Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Research</strong> Centre for Build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Environment</strong>al Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g – which<br />

are particularly strong <strong>in</strong> collaborative <strong>and</strong> applied research.<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Civil <strong>and</strong> Structural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The mission <strong>of</strong> the Department is to provide high quality application-oriented programmes to tra<strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers to<br />

meet the future <strong>in</strong>frastructure needs <strong>of</strong> Hong Kong <strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, <strong>and</strong> also to advance scientific knowledge <strong>and</strong> facilitate<br />

technology transfer through research <strong>and</strong> consultancy activities. The Department is very active <strong>in</strong> research <strong>and</strong><br />

consultancy. There are about 96 research students <strong>in</strong> the Department pursu<strong>in</strong>g either MPhil or PhD programmes.<br />

Besides the research students, there are about 103 research personnel, supported by research funds, work<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

various research projects. The Department considers the formation <strong>of</strong> research centres <strong>and</strong> groups as an important<br />

mechanism to susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> to further strengthen its research capability. At present, there are two research centres<br />

<strong>and</strong> three research groups <strong>in</strong> the Department.<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Survey<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Geo-Informatics<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Survey<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Geo-Informatics is the only academic unit amongst the local tertiary<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g a range <strong>of</strong> opportunities for education, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> research <strong>in</strong> the fields <strong>of</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Survey<strong>in</strong>g<br />

& Geo-Informatics. We focus on acquisition, modell<strong>in</strong>g, analysis, <strong>and</strong> management <strong>of</strong> spatially referenced data<br />

for a wide range <strong>of</strong> applications. These <strong>in</strong>clude map-mak<strong>in</strong>g, navigation, monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g projects <strong>and</strong><br />

geological hazards, environmental monitor<strong>in</strong>g, boundary determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>and</strong> geographic <strong>in</strong>formation management.<br />

The Department has close l<strong>in</strong>ks with both <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>and</strong> local academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essions. L<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

with the local pr<strong>of</strong>essional community are ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed through our community service <strong>and</strong> consultancy activities,<br />

hence our courses <strong>and</strong> research are oriented towards the needs <strong>of</strong> Hong Kong.<br />
