The Department of Building and Real Estate is one of the oldest departments in the University and has been
producing graduates for the construction, real estate, and related industries for over 70 years. During this time we
have helped develop the infrastructure and services of the region. Many of our graduates now occupy important
positions in industry. They represent an important group of people contributing to the growth and development
of Hong Kong. Our aim is to provide programmes that are application oriented, and produce graduates who can
apply theories to practice. To ensure this, our research is of an applied nature relevant to industrial, commercial and
community needs. We have established and will continue to develop dedicated partnerships with business, industry
and the professions. We have an excellent reputation worldwide and are working to extend our links internationally.

Building Services Engineering in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has an enviable reputation for leading edge
research. We combine academic excellence with open-mindednees that responds to community needs and enables
us to quickly put together multidisciplinary teams to meet the changing demands of the profession and society
at large. Over the years our staff have developed expertise across a wide range of BSE topics. These specialisms
inform both their teaching and the wider developments taking place within industry and the workplace. Our staff’s
research credentials mean we are able to respond quickly to issues of the moment, such as the SARS outbreak, and
make a meaningful contribution to high priority concerns. We have, in particular, two research centres of excellence
- the Research Centre for Fire Engineering and the Research Centre for Building Environmental Engineering – which
are particularly strong in collaborative and applied research.

The mission of the Department is to provide high quality application-oriented programmes to train engineers to
meet the future infrastructure needs of Hong Kong and China, and also to advance scientific knowledge and facilitate
technology transfer through research and consultancy activities. The Department is very active in research and
consultancy. There are about 96 research students in the Department pursuing either MPhil or PhD programmes.
Besides the research students, there are about 103 research personnel, supported by research funds, working on
various research projects. The Department considers the formation of research centres and groups as an important
mechanism to sustain and to further strengthen its research capability. At present, there are two research centres
and three research groups in the Department.
Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics

The Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics is the only academic unit amongst the local tertiary
institutions offering a range of opportunities for education, training and research in the fields of Land Surveying
& Geo-Informatics. We focus on acquisition, modelling, analysis, and management of spatially referenced data
for a wide range of applications. These include map-making, navigation, monitoring of engineering projects and
geological hazards, environmental monitoring, boundary determination and geographic information management.
The Department has close links with both international and local academic institutions and the professions. Links
with the local professional community are maintained through our community service and consultancy activities,
hence our courses and research are oriented towards the needs of Hong Kong.
