Project title
Torsional Vibration Control of Suspension Bridge
Decks Using Tuned Liquid Column Damper
Dr Xue studied as a PhD candidate in the Department of Civil and Structural
Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 1995 to 1998,
under the supervision of Prof. Jan-ming Ko and Prof. Youlin Xu. During that
period, he mainly did research projects on Wind-Induced Vibration Control
of Cable Suspension Bridges and was involved in many field measurements
for Tsing Ma Bridge and other bridges in Hong Kong. Upon graduation
in December 1998, he returned to Beijing University of Technology for
his teaching and research. He is now a full professor in the College of
Architecture and Civil Engineering at Beijing University of Technology
and Director of Teaching Affairs Office of the University. He has published
6 books, obtained 5 patents, published over 100 technical papers and
received many academic awards. He is currently a member of the Executive
Council of International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS)
and Vice-President of China Spatial Structures Committee.

Project title
A new approach to construction planning and site
space utilization through computer visualization
Prof. Zhang Jianping graduated from Tsinghua University in 1980 and has
been working in the Department of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University.
She worked as a Research Assistant and PhD candidate in the area of
computer visualization on construction planning and site space utilization
from 1991 to 1995 under the supervision of Prof. Michael Anson, and
obtained her Doctor of Philosophy from The Hong Kong Polytechnic
University in 1996. She is now a Professor and a supervisor of PhD
students in the Department of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University. Her
current research interest includes CAD/CAE in civil engineering, 4D-CAD,
information technology in construction, Building Information Model (BIM)
and Building Life-Cycle Management (BLM). She has undertaken a large
number of research projects including the projects funded from the National
Technological Support Program for the 10th five-year and the 11th-Fiveyear,
National Natural Science Foundation of China and Research Grants
Council of Hong Kong. She has published 5 professional books and over
100 journal/conference papers, and received many academic awards. Prof.
Zhang is currently a board member of Specialty Committee in Construction
Information Technology, Science and Technology Committee, Ministry of
Construction in China, and a board member of China Engineering Graphics
Society.

Policy and Economic Considerations on Waste
Minimization and Recycling in Hong Kong
“When I joined PolyU, I was affiliated with the then Environmental
Engineering Unit which has now developed into the Research Centre for
Environmental Technology and Management. Perhaps it was because of
my gender, and also because my study area was so different from the rest
of others that during my doctoral study, I enjoyed almost unrestrained
freedom to conduct my research. Being the minority of the minority
however did not preclude me from making early accomplishments. Yet,
only later did I realize that the inadvertent occasional honest arrogance I
exhibited at that time had repeatedly given hard times to those who worked
with me. Had it not for their forgiveness and understanding, I would not
have been able to enjoy my study as much as I did, and I might not have
chosen to join the academia aferwards. I would like to say thank you to
all of those with whom I had worked closely, the research assistants, the
laboratory technicians, fellow research students…, and not the least, Prof.
Jan-ming Ko, the then Department Head of CSE and Prof. Chi Sun Poon, my
doctorate supervisor – all of you are important in making my days in CSE
one of the most memorable period in my life.”

A Methodology for Comparing the Productivities of
the Ready Mixed Concrete Industries in Major Cities
Prof. Wang is a Professor at the Department of Construction Management,
School of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and
currently Deputy Director, Institute of International Engineering Project
Management, Tsinghua University. His research interest is mainly on Public-
Private Partnership (PPP). He has produced 200+ publications and is one of
the top contributors of journal papers in his research field in last decade.
He is sitting in some academic and professional bodies, these include being
Chairman of the China National Collaboration Network for MEng (PM)
Education (100+ universities), Board Member (representing Asia) of the
Project Management Institute’s Global Accreditation Centre for Project
Management Degree, Editorial Board Advisor/Member of Construction
Management and Economics, Management Decision, Journal of Financial
Management of Property and Construction. He is also one of the most
popular lecturers in China and has been invited to lecture on PPP, project
management, risk management or research methods for 1000+ times since
he returned to China and re-joined Tsinghua in 2003.
