Biography<br />
Dr Wendy Y. Chen received her PhD <strong>in</strong> urban forestry from the University <strong>of</strong><br />
Hong Kong <strong>in</strong> 2006. Before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g The Hong Kong Polytechnic University,<br />
she was a research assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the University <strong>of</strong> Hong Kong for<br />
three years <strong>and</strong> then an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the Hong Kong Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Education. Her research areas <strong>in</strong>clude the quantification <strong>and</strong> valuation<br />
<strong>of</strong> ecosystem services generated by a variety <strong>of</strong> natural ecosystems,<br />
application <strong>and</strong> validation <strong>of</strong> economic valuation methods (such as<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>gent valuation method, hedonic pric<strong>in</strong>g method, <strong>and</strong> travel cost<br />
method) <strong>in</strong> the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese context, people’s perception <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction with<br />
urban nature, <strong>and</strong> urban environmental studies. Dr Chen has published<br />
more than 20 referred journal papers <strong>and</strong> serves many <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
journals as a referee.<br />

Biography<br />
Dr Hai Guo jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Department <strong>of</strong> Civil <strong>and</strong> Structural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2007 as an Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. In the past four years, he has secured<br />
five research grants from external sources as a Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Investigator (PI).<br />
Moreover, a total amount <strong>of</strong> HK$9.31 million research grants have been<br />
secured by him as a co-PI. He has published 80 papers <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
journals <strong>and</strong> conference proceed<strong>in</strong>gs, with over 696 SCOPUS citations<br />
(average 13.65 citations per paper) to date. He is also an active reviewer<br />
for over 20 key environmental journals such as Atmospheric <strong>Environment</strong>,<br />
Journal <strong>of</strong> Geophysical <strong>Research</strong>, <strong>Environment</strong>al Science <strong>and</strong> Technology,<br />
Science <strong>of</strong> the Total <strong>Environment</strong>, <strong>Environment</strong>al Chemistry, Journal <strong>of</strong><br />
Air <strong>and</strong> Waste Management Association, Journal <strong>of</strong> Hazard Material,<br />
etc. Dr Guo has been the director board member <strong>of</strong> the Air <strong>and</strong> Waste<br />
Management Association, Hong Kong Chapter s<strong>in</strong>ce 2007. He was the cosecretary<br />
<strong>of</strong> the organiz<strong>in</strong>g committee <strong>of</strong> the first International Conference<br />
on Susta<strong>in</strong>able Urbanization (ICSU) held <strong>in</strong> Hong Kong <strong>in</strong> 2010. Dr Guo is<br />
also a member <strong>of</strong> the International Advisory Committee <strong>and</strong> the vice chair<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Asian Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee <strong>of</strong> the 10th International Conference on<br />
Healthy Build<strong>in</strong>g to be held <strong>in</strong> Australia <strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />

Biography<br />
Dr Dai graduated with his BEng <strong>and</strong> MSc <strong>in</strong> Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from Dalian<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Technology <strong>in</strong> 1994 <strong>and</strong> 1997, respectively. He holds two PhDs.<br />
One was <strong>in</strong> Structural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from Dalian University <strong>of</strong> Technology <strong>in</strong><br />
2000 <strong>and</strong> another was <strong>in</strong> Socio-<strong>Environment</strong>al Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from Hokkaido<br />
University <strong>in</strong> 2003. Before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g The Hong Kong Polytechnic University,<br />
he had two years <strong>of</strong> experience as a post-doctoral fellow at Hokkaido<br />
University <strong>and</strong> then worked as a researcher <strong>in</strong> the Life Cycle Management<br />
<strong>Research</strong> Centre, the Port <strong>and</strong> Airport <strong>Research</strong> Institute, Japan for two <strong>and</strong><br />
a half years. Dr Dai is the recipient <strong>of</strong> several academic awards <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the ‘’Best <strong>Research</strong> Paper Award’’ from ASCE, Journal <strong>of</strong> Composites for<br />
<strong>Construction</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2005. He is an active member <strong>of</strong> JCI, JSCE, ISO/TC71, ICCMC<br />
<strong>and</strong> IIFC. He is also a local Editorial Committee member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
journal Advances <strong>in</strong> Structural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> serves many <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
journals as a referee.<br />

Biography<br />
Dr Sumalee holds a BEng <strong>in</strong> Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, a MSc(Eng) with Dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong><br />
Transportation Plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> a PhD from Leeds University. His<br />
research areas are network modell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> optimisation, network reliability,<br />
<strong>in</strong>telligent transport system, road pric<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able transport<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g. He has received several prizes <strong>and</strong> awards for his research works<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Hans-Jürgen Ewers Prize, the Smeed Prize, <strong>and</strong> two outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
paper awards at the EASTS conferences. Dr Sumalee has also secured<br />
several research grants from the Hong Kong RGC, UK DfT, Volvo <strong>Research</strong><br />
Foundation, <strong>and</strong> EU Commission. He is currently the Editor <strong>of</strong> the Journal<br />
<strong>of</strong> Transport Policy, Associate Editor <strong>of</strong> Networks <strong>and</strong> Spatial Economics,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Editorial Board Member <strong>of</strong> the Journal <strong>of</strong> Advanced Transportation. He<br />
is also serv<strong>in</strong>g as a committee member <strong>of</strong> the US Transportation <strong>Research</strong><br />
Board Network Modell<strong>in</strong>g Committee (National <strong>Research</strong> Council)<br />
<strong>and</strong> an <strong>of</strong>ficial advisor to the director <strong>of</strong> the State Railway <strong>of</strong> Thail<strong>and</strong>.<br />
