85 YEARS AND BEYOND
Current Ipswich CIB staff PCSC Max Gardener, PCC Steve Williamson, and
Det Sgt Dan Morgan.
Retired support staff Mr Jim Curley, retired Assistant Commissioner Roly
Dargusch, and retired detective Mr John Hawkins.
was given to Alfred Mairs, the first
detective to serve in Ipswich in 1927.
Mairs was born in Carrickneady,
County Mayo, Ireland, on 24 August
1892.
Also on 2 August, a niece of Alfred
Mairs living in South Wales, UK,
googled the name ‘Mairs’ and
‘Carrickneady’. A self-confessed
genealogist, Sheila Arthur said,
‘up popped an article from the
Queensland Times’, providing details
of the celebratory function. After
further googling, she located a similar
article in the Queensland Police Union
Journal.
Mrs Arthur made contact with the
Yamanto police station and has now
been sent a copy of the function’s
celebratory booklet for her archives.
As a footnote, she added that Richard
J Mairs, a nephew of Alfred, is still
residing in the home in Carrickneady
where Alfred was born.
