There is huge need in South 

East Queensland and 

Redcliffe is the ideal place to

have invested in a small 

stadium for their region

amount of business bought 

into the community via many 

events. Keep an eye out next

Alexis takes home $5,200 win 

Just a day before her 61st birthday, 

member Alexis Hancock got the best 

surprise gift of all, winning the latest 

edition of the Dolphins Monthly 

Birthday Card Draw. 

A Club member for a number of years, 

Alexis, membership number 59445, was 

extremely grateful for the early Birthday 

present, after being drawn first out on the 

night. 

Mrs Hancock said the prize had already 

gone to great use after sharing much of it 

amongst her family and groceries. 

The Hancock’s, of Redcliffe, said they really 

enjoy life on the Peninsula and try to get down 

to the Club regularly for meals in between 

refurbishing their home. 

One lucky member claims the major prize 

on the last Thursday of the month. Between 

5.30pm and 7.30pm, the Club draws one lucky 

member from the birthday barrel to take home 

a year’s worth of groceries or fuel to the value 

of $5,200 in Coles/Myer gift vouchers. 

As with every Birthday draw held, the 

winner must be present to win. If you aren’t

‘THANKS FOR ASSISTING 

US TO CLOSE THE GAP’ 

The second Close The Gap Day was 

held at the Village Motors Redcliffe 

Dolphins round 12 home game in 

May. 

The Dolphins partnered with local 

community groups for the local derby verse 

Sunshine Coast. 

Organisations involved in the 

coordination and celebrations included the 

Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, 

Deadly Choices campaign, Australian 

Indigenous Youth Academy, Arthur Beetson 

Foundation and Closing The Gap who all 

have a strong focus on the health and 

wellbeing of Indigenous Australians in our 

community. 

Thanks to the Deadly Choices campaign 

for their sponsorship of the day, entry fees 

were waived so everyone could attend the 

televised game at no cost. 

Local elder Terry Williams performed the 

Welcome To Country ceremony on field 

with traditional acknowledgements before 

junior Indigenous Dolphins Brock David 

and Leeroy Watson-Doctor delivered the 

match day balls to team captains Marty Hatfield and Ryan Hansen. 

Official proceedings held on field prior 

to kick off involved Moreton Bay Regional 

Council Mayor Allan Sutherland, IUIH CEO 

Adrian Carson and Sponsors of the 

upcoming Murri Carnival - Arthur Beetson 

Foundation and Queensland Aboriginal & 

Islander Health Council (QAIHC). 

This year’s Deadly Choices health 

marquees were screening patiends and ran 

a smoking survey about the prevention of 

smoking-related illnesses and provision of 

information. 

All team members participating in the 

upcoming QAIHC/ABF Murri Rugby League 

Carnival must have had their annual Health 

Check, so the day provided a good 

opportunity for participants to get 

organised early. 

The drug and alcohol free event saw the 

Dick Boxsell Dolphins Can Bar provide a 

Healthy Eating Menu especially for the day. 

Fans were treated to music from 

Aboriginal artists while Dolphin Oval 

kids renowned for taking the field 

weren’t left out of the fun. 

The Moreton Bay Murris, a local 

touch football organization and entrants to 

the QAIHC/ABF Qld Murri Carnival were 

also here enjoying the day and promoting 

their group with a raffle of beautiful 

Aboriginal artwork. 

Australian Indigenous Youth Academy 

trainees lead by Deon Bird (Dolphins Player 

No. 467) joined the Deadly Choices staff in 

hosting rugby league and traditional games 

on field across the whole day which saw the 

Dolphin Oval kids having lots of fun. 

Both current and past Indigenous players 

were recognized at post-match 

presentations inside the Redcliffe Leagues 

Club and it was great to see so many of 

them in attendance. 

The Village Motors Redcliffe Dolphins 

would also like to thank Dezigna Impression 

for assisting in the provision of gifts to past 

Indigenous players and prizes for the day as 

well as Dreatime Kullilla Art and Blackswan 

Dreaming for attending the day.

gathering information and options for 

possible supporter merchandise items 

to cater to growing interest. 

Relations Manager Kirsty Fields says, “I 

receive at least one inquiry a week via the 

Dolphins Facebook page or direct email 

inquiries from supporters looking to find out 

if we have jerseys or polos and hats and 

where they can get them from.” 

“A couple of months ago we advertised 

for an Apparel Volunteer to assist with the 

project, due to the time required to set a 

proper program up just isn’t available to 

staff. 

Already working hard for some time 

selling merchandise are a couple of the Red & 

White Supporters which man the Dolphins 

Apparel Stand at senior game days. 

“We just needed more hours to be 

committed during the week to cover off on 

things like stock levels, handling inquiries and 

eBay auctions as well as take a look at some 

potential new ideas.” 

Thanks to junior volunteer Dave Downey 

and Dolphins web editor Jon Sloan a variety 

of options have been listed at the Club’s 

website www.redcliffedolphins.com.au 

Under the website’s Game Day menu, the 

Merchandise menu is active once again. 

Direct online purchases can’t be made 

directly from the website as yet as the Club 

doesn’t have the facility, but it is another 

avenue currently being explored. 

What supporters will need to do is submit 

their details directly into the inquiry form at 

the bottom of the page and our staff will 

reply with full details of items and payment 

instructions. 

At this time orders and cash payments can 

be made on senior game days and credit card 

payments are treated separately with staff 

during the week. 

Without promoting this new service, many 

orders have already been made and 

successfully filled.

Sign Up To Sponsor Dolphin Oval 

Dolphins staff have been working on field signage 

projects for the last two seasons. 

In order to make sure sponsors allocated spaces 

are consistent and that our sponsoring business’ 

brands are being looked after staff work with 

professional signage companies to nail out the 

logistics. 

At the end of each season signs are moved, 

removed, updated and new businesses signed up. In 

the last off-season we had several new businesses 

join the Dolphins sponsorship group via Dolphin 

Oval Signage including Apex Steel and ADP Painting. 

In January 2014 signs were further shuffled along 

the Channel 9 television arc to enable new 

customers to put signs up in this area. 

This month we launch a special 18 month deal 

for businesses looking to sign up to Sponsor the 

Dolphins. 

Signage sponsors enjoy great exposure to 

Dolphin Oval crowds as well as via print media, 

televised games as well as photography and video 

footage on social media platforms. 

Any new business who manufactures fence 

signage for Dolphin Oval in 2014 will pay only one 

year’s signage fees but have their sign to stay in 

place until December 2015 without any further fees 

due. 

“It would be a clever move for businesses to take 

up the sale this month ahead of the end of financial 

year. Since field signage can be written up to your 

advertising expenses it’s a bit of a win-win situation 

for those looking to align their brand with the 

Dolphins,” says Football Club Manager Grant Cleal.

Coach’s comments: “A below average 

performance at home. Not many players to 

single out for special mention unfortunately. 

We lost Jon Green with a calf injury that will 

sideline him for a couple of weeks. The Jets 

played an expansive game that had them passing 

from sideline to sideline, short kick offs and 

chip and chases. Our attitude particularly in 

defence will need to improve dramatically in 

the weeks to come. Every defeat can hold some 

worthwhile lessons- this will be no different!

CLUBHOUSE NEWS 

A month of mixed results but 

the effort levels are improving 

The Intrust Super Cup side started 

the month with a below standard 

outing against the Ipswich Jets on 

Dolphin Oval, this was very 

disappointing because as a Club we 

made a goal of performing well at 

home each week. 

We know that if you can get your 

results at home then you will be playing 

football when it really matters, in 

September. Our fans and loyal supporters 

leaving early like they did that day has 

resinated in me and the players and me 

are determined to make sure that doesn’t 

happen again. We followed that weekend 

up with a couple of tough performances, 

the first at Kougari Oval where we went 

down by a try in a much improved effort. 

We then got the result we needed against 

North’s. In a side containing arguably the 

youngest average age of players in the 

competition we showed a maturity 

beyond our years to defeat the devils in a 

performance we will look to build on in 

the coming months. 

The home game against the Sunshine 

Coast was always going to be interesting 

as it’s probably considered the local derby. 

The round also marked the Closing The 

Gap initiative which supports indigenous 

health in the local community. As a Club 

we were keen to get good results on the 

field in front of a healthy home crowd 

which we did with a convincing win 34-14. 

I mentioned earlier that we are 

competing with a relatively young squad, 

this points towards a very prosperous 

future for the Club and the key to keeping 

these players is enjoyment and success 

along with on field development. A most 

pleasing fact is the amount of local juniors 

in the top grade, this is something all clubs 

strive for but few ever achieve. Look 

through any clubs websites and you will 

find that only a handful of clubs will only 

have one or two locals playing first grade. 

So far this year we have had six junior 

Dolphins graduate to first grade status 

and by years end there could possibly be 

more! While ever our players show a 

good attitude, good form and they are fit I 

will give them an opportunity. It provides 

for a healthy environment when you have 

the young guys putting pressure on the 

older guys regularly. 

Speaking of old guys I spoke with Petero 

Civoniceva during the month. After being 

hit by an unusually high injury toll and 

suspensions I contacted big Bulla to see if 

he could help out. He said he would be 

happy to do it one more time (or two) 

while we get through a tough period 

which includes origin time which could

Coach’s comments: “We needed two things 

out of this match, an improved effort and a win. 

Well we got one out of two with an improved 

effort all-round, I was pleased with the 

improvement and knew that with a similar 

performance next week a result would follow. 

Jared Cherry played well off the bench in a 

torrid battle among the two forward packs 

while Oliver Regan was outstanding on the 

wing. Jake Marketo picked up a five week 

suspension out of the match for a shoulder 

charge on Jake Granville. Jake is a quality player 

and it will be up to someone else now to fill his 

boots.

see a few of our players get a Broncos call 

up. I cannot say anything about Petero that 

you have not heard already but he will 

have to go down as one of the best 

Clubmen I know. 

The Colts and A-Grade have had good 

months despite a few wobbles. Both sides 

started the month undefeated so it was 

probably a matter of time before they 

finished second on the scoreboard with 

both sides losing to Wynnum. The A-Grade 

bounced back against North’s in a tough 

encounter while the Colts lost after the 

final siren. All teams will now be looking 

for consistency heading into the middle 

stages of the season.

Coach’s comments: “Back at Dolphin Oval, 

this time against cross town rivals the devils. On 

the back of an electric first half which saw us 

heading to the sheds at half time with a 20 point 

lead. Despite the great attack I thought the 20 

minute period after half time in defence clinched 

the win for us. We kept North’s down their end 

of the field for a long period after the break and 

managed to score some nice tries also to seal a 

good win. Zach Strasser was back to his best 

with a top game, the likes of which could see 

him called upon at the Broncos during the 

Origin period. Sarafu Fatiaki also dominated 

with the ball scoring a good try in the first half. 

Dwayne Duncan and Christian Morris made 

debuts and looked every bit first grade material.

Men 

Of 

League 

The Redcliffe Dolphins have long supported the Men Of 

League organization as the only charity designed to support 

the rugby league community. 

Men Of League provide support and assistance to men, 

women and children and the broader rugby league community 

involved in the game at any level. 

The Dolphins sign up every senior players to become 

members of the Men Of League charity which only charges a 

one-off membership fee of $20 

In 2013 the Queensland Rugby League started promoting 

the charity by making them namesake of a fixture round in the 

Intrust Super Cup. 

This year will mark the second Men of League Weekend, 

which will hinge on the theme of ‘Pull up your socks for the 

Men of League’. 

The Men Of League Round will be held the weekend of 

28-29 June when the Village Motors Redcliffe Dolphins take on 

Tweed Heads. 

In support of the round our Intrust Super Cup team will be 

wearing special navy and gold commemorative socks made for 

the Men Of League. 

Teams from all age groups are able to support the round 

also by ordering socks through their team manager. Contact 

your team manager if you’d like to support Men Of League 

round too. 

To encourage engagement of clubs and teams, the Men Of 

League Foundation will run an online photo competition via 

the Men of League Facebook page. 

The winning club will receive a private coaching clinic 

designed by Wayne Bennett and delivered by Ben Ross. 

To enter, clubs simply need to submit an image of their 

players sporting the commemorative Men of League socks in a 

unique location – the more creative the better. The competition 

will launch closer the Round. 

• To further the support the charity, the Village Motors 

Redcliffe Dolphins recently offered the Foundation an 

opportunity to promote the membership drive via a 

permanent fence sign on Dolphin Oval.

Coach’s comments: “The Cutters forwards 

dominated the ruck making easy metres up 

centre of the field, continually making us defend 

off the back foot. They were on a roll in the first 

half and we couldn’t really stop them. Despite 

being down 14-0 at the break, I thought we 

could get back into the game. I thought if we 

had our share of the ball, played an up-tempo 

game and lifted our defence, we would be a 

chance. While nobody likes losing, I think we 

can take some positives out of the match. Our 

line speed and contact was terrible all night, but 

I think we improved in the second half. I also 

was really pleased with the debut of Tyson 

Cleal, who was in the thick of all the tough stuff 

upfront. He didn’t look out of place and the 

tougher it got the more he liked it and the 

better he was.”

BACK FROM 

THE BRINK

IF young Ryan Hill had got his way, 

you wouldn’t be reading this story. 

Never mind that Old Ryan Hill is still a 

tender 21 years of age. 

His younger version wanted him gone, 

consigned to history. 

“One afternoon before pre-season 

training I’d just had enough. I took a heap 

of sleeping tablets,” explains the Redcliffe 

Dolphins back-rower. 

“I could feel my heart reacting to the 

overdose at training but I didn’t care. I 

wasn’t concerned. 

“Straight afterwards I met a mate for 

dinner but I had to leave. My heart was 

thumping out of my chest. I was dizzy and 

seeing double. 

“I began to drive off but I could barely 

keep my eyes on the road. I was slipping 

in and out of consciousness . . .“ 

All this had come to a head after 

months of sinking deeper into the mire. 

From what he felt was a successful 

2011 season, Young Ryan was devastated 

when he ruptured his ACL in the first 10 

minutes of the 2012 campaign, his first 

year in open-age footy. 

Weeks on end of sitting around and 

watching his mates play without him 

were tearing him apart. 

While others’ fortunes kicked on, Ryan 

noticed he was gaining weight, had already 

lost touch with many of his school friends, 

his university results were going 

backwards, and there were relationship 

problems thrown into the mix. 

The edginess and outbursts of anger 

came on strong. 

Young Ryan didn’t feel he could 

understand his own thoughts and, at 

times, he’d look to the side of the road 

and consider veering off at top speed. 

“He used to say to me, ‘Mum, in three 

years’ time you would cope if I died’,” 

mother Kim reveals. 

“I don’t know where he could get that 

idea from. 

“He became a recluse and was always 

vomiting and breaking down.” 

Then came the crescendo. 

Young Ryan not only endangered his 

own life when he overdosed but everyone 

else on the road that night. 

It was only a decision to call his mother 

in his final moments of consciousness 

that ultimately saved his life. 

By the barest of margins. 

“She asked me where I was and told 

me to pull over to the side of the road,” 

Old Ryan says. 

“Apparently I was out cold by the time 

my parents arrived. 

“Mum’s a nurse, so she began CPR and 

kept at it for 15 minutes until she brought 

me back. 

“You know I was so selfish at the time, 

when I woke up in hospital I wished Mum 

hadn’t done it.” 

Yet the depths of despair had not yet 

been fully plunged and, after returning to 

training, 

Young Ryan again tore his ACL in the 

2013 pre-season and was consigned to a 

second successive year on the sideline. 

This time though, his family and clubmates 

were prepared. 

His mum would take Ryan out at 

training, hiding out of sight and watching 

his movements and demeanour.

Lindsay and other club staff were clued in 

on his progress and kept a special eye out. 

Petero Civoniceva, playing his swan 

song season at the club, was also thrust 

to the forefront. 

The face of the QRL’s ‘Turn to Me’ 

campaign to address mental health, 

Civoniceva suddenly found himself having 

to extend his role to real life. 

“Petero was really good . . . we would 

chat over the phone or meet for coffee 

and talk about stuff that wasn’t football 

related,” Ryan says. 

“He would say, ‘Mate I’m only a phone 

call away, night or day’. I’d always looked 

up to Petero, but I was still blown away by 

how humble he was and being there for 

me. 

“He’s my role model now. I want to be 

the sort of guy he is.” 

Another experience that had a profound 

effect on Young Ryan was working with special 

needs children as a teacher’s aide while he 

recovered from his second knee reconstruction. 

It made him place his own concerns in 

perspective - and realise how different 

approaches to his problems could have him 

thinking more positively. 

Now on the edge of a long-awaited 

comeback in 2014, Old Ryan swears he has 

never felt stronger, physically or mentally. 

And he’s so very, very glad that the universe 

conspired against the plans of his younger self. 

“Once you get through it, you never want to 

go back to that stage. I was sick,” says Ryan. 

“You feel a strong urge to prevent others 

going through it too.”

League, Mogg has been 

involved in coaching 

roles with the Sunshine 

Coast Sea Eagles and the 

Redcliffe Dolphins in the 

Queensland Cup competition. 

“Adam and I have links 

stretching back to our 

time at Canberra and 

also when we were both 

with Les Catalans,” 

McFadden said. 

“Until now he has 

been helping us behind 

the scenes in the video 

analysis area. This is a 

great opportunity for 

him to further his 

coaching career.” 

The signing comes as 

the Warriors prepare to 

face Mogg’s and 

McFadden’s old club 

Canberra at Eden Park 

on Saturday. 

After beginning his 

NRL career with 

Parramatta in 2002, 

Mogg played 96 times for 

the Raiders across five 

seasons – 2003-2006 and 

2010 – while McFadden 

had 76 games for the 

club from 1997-2001. 

“I have aspirations as a 

coach and I’m really 

excited about having this 

chance,” Mogg said. 

“There’s so much 

talent at this club and 

the performances lately,

DHP’s Body Overhaul Challenge 2014 

The start of February 2014 saw the commencement 

of DHP’s 12 week Body Overhaul Challenge. 

The Challenge was the first in what will be periodical programs 

to be run by the DHP Personal Training Department. 

The challenge took 36 members through a series of educational 

seminars, and personal training sessions. 

It certainly wasn’t an easy task, and I’m sure for most there 

were some tough times. 

Let’s face it changing your habits by developing new ones 

does not always come easy. 

But the results at the end of the period are OUTSTANDING 

to say the least! 

Our male runner up was Beau Devine with Craig Althaus taking 

out the winner’s title. Our female runner up was Suzanne 

Bell with Sue Althaus taking out the other winner’s title. It was 

truly amazing to see a husband and wife not only change their 

whole lifestyle together but to also be crowned the winners of 

the DHP Body Overhaul Challenge together. 

In total the whole group lost an incredible 171.40 kilos. 

Collectively the whole group also lost 971.50 centimetres. 

We have to say that we are immensely proud of the achievements 

of this group. The dedication shown was simply inspira- 

tional and we sincerely hope that we have made a change 

to the lives of these members; changes that they can take 

away and use for the rest of their lives.

given.”

Yesterday’s hero can return today 

DON’T know about you but I still feel 

like I did when I was in my 20s, it’s just 

when I look in the mirror reality hits 

back. 

For some of us, it’s when you start to 

play with the grandkids and the following 

day you can’t move or playing with 

them is just not an option any more. 

That’s when your body reminds you 

that you are not as young as you used to 

be. So is this it? Is this what we are 

happy to live with? We are old and we 

have to act old? 

No, I say, stepping down from my 

soap box and getting a little less dramatic. 

I work with chronically ill people 

with chronic heart and lung disease and 

I can tell you now we all benefit from 

regular exercise. 

Whether it’s a knee, hip replacement, 

chronic disease or you just haven’t 

moved for a while, you can and will 

benefit from regular exercise. 

Now I am not suggesting a marathon 

nor am I saying to get those footy shorts 

or netball skirt out from mothballs. I’m 

suggesting exercise suitable for you at a 

pace you can manage and slowly 

improve on. Yes, you do have to consult 

your doctor first, but once you have the 

all clear there is a plethora of choices in 

fitness classes and programs you can 

choose from nowadays. 

So for those of you who have fitness 

facilities at work, start today not 

Monday, today. 

Engage a personal trainer, walk in the 

pool or on the treadmill. Ten minutes of 

exercise today was more than what you 

did yesterday. Most of you will be goalorientated 

so set a goal i.e. (an easy one 

first) I am going to be able to walk up 

the stairs without having to talk in sign 

for a month. Work out with a friend, and 

motivate each other. Make a challenge 

at work or with a group of friends to be 

fitter, healthier and slimmer. Celebrate 

the positives of “dropped two sizes in 

clothing” etc. These challenges work as 

a starter, but for any long-term fitness 

program to work it has to be maintained. 

Remember, to put more quality in your 

life it’s a fulltime commitment. For 

those who are saying I can’t because I 

have chronic back problems, joint 

replacements etc., my answer is yes, 

you can. There are so many exercise 

choices you can access nowadays. Ask 

your doctor for advice on the nearest

what are you waiting for? There are 

places to see, golf courses to play and 

life to be lived … as the Nike brand says

1980 and then coached a Junior U10 side in 

1982, he stayed with the Junior Dolphins for 

quite a few years, also managing the U15 side 

through to U19 and then on to managing the 

Senior’s side. 

Ron started work with the Redcliffe 

Football Club with Bob Crosley approximately 

in 1982 at Dolphin Oval while the League’s 

Club was still at the show ground, he retired 

as groundsman in 2002. Ron joined the Old 

Boys in 1985 and became our Provider and in 

1988 joined the committee and in 1997 

became Vice-President and then President in 

1998, Life member in the year 2000. 

Cheryl & Ron organised the Redcliffe 

Rugby League Old Boy’s Master teams 

which travelled to New Zealand, and also 

the big game held at Dolphin Oval in 2000 

while playing and managing the masters 

team for 5 years. 

On Sunday 11th May the Football Club 

held a minute silence at Dolphin Oval and 

the Des Webb Hill was a sea of Maroon in 

honour of Ron with the players successful 

against Norths which was a fitting way to 

say good bye to a top Bloke.
