Environmental Competitions
We encourage community participation through community initiatives such as Golden Mile
Hedgerow Competition, Tidy Estate Competition, Tidy Cemetery Competition, National Spring
Clean, Floral Pride and Irish Business Against Litter.
A new anti-litter competition aimed at secondary school students was initiated in 2011
whereby students have to write, produce, and act in an anti-litter short film. Copies of all
short films will be distributed to all schools in the county.
Adopt-a-Bring Bank Scheme
Tidy Towns/Community Groups were invited to participate in this scheme to help combat the
problem of illegal dumping at bring banks around the county. Participants monitor the bring
banks and report illegal dumping. Groups were also encouraged to enhance the appearance
of the bring bank facility.
Department of the Environment Grants
Two new grants were made available from the Department of the Environment, Community
and Local Government to Roscommon County Council in 2011.
A grant of €5,000 for Civic Responsibility Week was used to enhance areas of high amenity
throughout the county and a further grant of €10,000 was made available to Roscommon
County Council under the which was used to clean up areas such as lakes, walkways and
entrances to towns and villages between the months of May and August.
