LECARROW VILLAGE DESIGN STATEMENT
VILLAGE CHARACTER
Biodiversity
“Biodiversity has been defined as the
variety of life. It is every tiny insect, every
plant and tree, every fish, bird and
mammal. Anything that lives is part of our
biodiversity. It is important to remember
that biodiversity includes us too” (Draft
Roscommon Biodiversity Action Plan
2008, p.6).
There is a growing global recognition that
the world’s increasing population and our
growing consumption of natural resources
has led to a rapid loss of biodiversity.
Therefore, in 1996, the Irish government
signed up to The Convention on Biological
Diversity and to the conservation of
national and local biodiversity including
the production of a Biodiversity Action
Plan by each local authority. Roscommon’s
Biodiversity Plan is currently in Draft form
and once adopted will become part of the
County Roscommon Heritage Plan and
Roscommon County Development Plan.
Each area of biodiversity is unique and in
County Roscommon biodiversity includes
a variety of habitats such as our waterways,
peatlands, woodlands and agriculture as
well as species such as the red squirrel and
pine martens, and plants such as the Marsh
Pea and Irish Whitebeam.
The Wildlife Area by the Harbour
The biodiversity of Lecarrow includes a
variety of habitats, from the gardens of
local residents to the woodland areas that
surround the village, the wildlife area by
the Harbour and along the Canal, the
grasslands, and wetlands, and raised bog
that surround the village and reach as far as
Lough Ree and the Shannon, St John’s
Wood and Rindoon. Each of these areas
