RAPID
Operated by the Department of
Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
It is a targeted investment programme for
disadvantaged urban areas. RAPID 11 is
the programme for provincial towns. Both
programmes provides funding and cofunding
to Government Departments, State
Agencies and Local Authorities in
accelerating investment in selected priority

LEADER
Aid under the various LEADER
programmes may take the form of support
for the following measures;
• Training;
• Analysis and Development;
• Innovative rural enterprises, craft
enterprises and local services / facilities
• Exploitation of agriculture, forestry and
fisheries products;
• Enhancement of natural / built / social /
cultural environment;
• Environmentally friendly initiatives;
• Animation and capacity building.

RuralDevelopment/LEADER
The Walks Scheme
Operated by the National Trails Office of
the Sports Council on behalf of the
Department of Community, Rural and
Gaeltacht Affairs with the co-operation of
the new Rural Recreation Officers
appointed by LEADER. It pays landowners
an annual fee up to a maximum of €3,000
for carrying out maintenance to their land
which forms part of a designated public
walk. Useful from a conservation point of
view for property owners who have
heritage sites and allow access to them, as
long as they are part of a walk designated
by the National Trails Office. Contact the

Heritage Council Grants Scheme
Operated by the Heritage Council, the aim
of the grant programme is to encourage
and enable people throughout Ireland to
enjoy, record, conserve, restore and
celebrate the distinctive qualities of their
local heritage, their community, and their
environment. Projects being considered for
2009 include local heritage, biodiversity,
archaeology, publications, architecture
research, and museums and archives. Grant
Schemes for 2009 include the following:
• Archaeology Research
• Architectural Research
• Local Heritage–for gathering
information, holdings seminars /
training courses, education /
community / outreach purposes and
other projects
• Museums and Archives – many aspects
• Publications – submit complete draft
text
• Wildlife Research
• Biodiversity Fund
