maximum of €13,500, and in special
circumstances up to 75% and €25,000.

Heritage Council – Buildings at Risk
Scheme
Operated by the Heritage Council for
repairs to historic buildings. Grants range
roughly from €5,000 - €25,000. Further

DOE Civic Structures Grants Scheme
Operated by the Department of the
Environment, Heritage and Local
Government. Local Authority may have
some input. For works of repair and
conservation to protected structures which
are in public ownership or open to the
public generally. Applications must be
accompanied by conservation report to
high standard. Grants range from €10,000 -
€50,000 euro. Further information and

year, in period from mid-November to
mid-February.
DOE Thatching Grant
Operated by the Department of the
Environment, Heritage and Local
Government. Local Authority may have
some input. For works of renovation to
thatched roofs which are at least 10 years
old. The house must be in use as a normal
place of residence (holiday homes are not
eligible). A grant of two thirds of the
approved cost, up to a maximum of
€3,810, is available. Further information

DOE Surplus Funds
Excess monies not spent by the
Department of the Environment, Heritage
and Local Government are channelled
through the local authorities’ Conservation
Officers / Heritage Officers and through
The Heritage Council for conservation
works. Available roughly October to
November; must be spent by end
November. Because of the short time-scale
the monies tend to be distributed to
projects already within the National
Conservation Grants scheme and other
projects. Awards granted up to €25,000.

DOE Special Funds
Monies granted by the Department of the

Government to special projects with largescale
one-off expenditure. Amounts range
from €100,000s to €millions. Often given
to churches or large country houses.
