<strong>Controlled</strong> <strong>Drug</strong>s Schedules<br />

Schedule 1<br />

These drugs have no recognised medic<strong>in</strong>al use and <strong>in</strong>clude cannabis, cocoa<br />

leaf, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and mescal<strong>in</strong>e. The production,<br />

possession and supply <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se drugs are limited to research or o<strong>the</strong>r special<br />

purposes.<br />

Schedule 2<br />

<strong>Drug</strong>s <strong>in</strong>clude diamorph<strong>in</strong>e (hero<strong>in</strong>), morph<strong>in</strong>e, pethid<strong>in</strong>e, amphetam<strong>in</strong>es and<br />

coca<strong>in</strong>e. They are subject to safe custody requirements and must be stored<br />

<strong>in</strong> a locked receptacle, usually <strong>in</strong> an appropriate controlled drug cab<strong>in</strong>et or<br />

approved safe, which can only be opened by <strong>the</strong> person <strong>in</strong> lawful possession<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> controlled drug, or a person authorised by <strong>the</strong> person. A register must<br />

be kept for schedule 2 CDs which must comply with relevant regulations.<br />

Schedule 3<br />

The majority <strong>of</strong> Schedule 3 controlled drugs are exempt from safe custody<br />

requirements (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g midazolam which was rescheduled on 1 January<br />

2008 from Schedule 4) and may be stored with o<strong>the</strong>r medic<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dispensary.<br />

Some Schedule 3 drugs that do require safe custody are temazepam,<br />

buprenorph<strong>in</strong>e flunitrazepam and diethylpropion.<br />

Schedule 4<br />

Relates to and <strong>in</strong>cludes drugs which are exempt from safe custody<br />

requirements, and <strong>the</strong> requirement to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a register. Examples are most<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> benzodiazep<strong>in</strong>es (except midazolam and temazepam), and most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

anabolic and androgenic steroids.<br />

Schedule 5<br />

Relates to and <strong>in</strong>cludes preparations <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> controlled drugs, which are<br />

exempt from full control, when present <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>al products <strong>of</strong> low strengths<br />

as <strong>the</strong>ir risk <strong>of</strong> misuse is reduced.<br />
