classes Close to Home Five Sundays, 1/6 - 2/3 12-4pm $215 Drawing inspiration from the Portland Grid Project, a photographic essay documenting Portland one square map grid at a time, this workshop consists of photographing randomly selected areas of the city, while continuously exploring and establishing each participant’s personal style and vision. Under the guidance of noted photographer Shawn Records, you’ll see that exotic locations aren’t nearly as critical in the making of great pictures as a clear focus and awareness. Each meeting will begin with a review of student work followed by a group photo field trip. Instructor: Shawn Records The Forbidden City Five Saturdays, 2/2 – 3/1 6-9pm $195 Have you ever wanted to explore a hidden world with your camera? There is a long tradition of people photographing secret and forbidden subjects. Through a look at the work of photographers such as Bellocq, Brassai, Diane Arbus, Nan Goldin, Larry Clark, Joel Peter Witkin and many others, veteran street photographer Bobby Abrahamson will guide you through the process of choosing a topic, gaining access, developing your photographic vision, and mustering the Bobby Abrahamson courage to embark on your own secret photographic journey. Students will be given challenging weekly assignments, and/or can work on a long-term project of their choosing. Classes will involve slide shows, lectures, critiques, in-class exercises, and discussions. Sat & Sun 2/23 & 2/24 10-4pm $295 Zoo animals take the spotlight in this lively and colorful two-day workshop in conjunction with the Oregon Zoo. This is an unparalleled opportunity to get up close and personal with beautiful exotic animals such as a ninebanded South American armadillo, unusual lizards, owls, wonderfully patterned snakes, a spunky kinkajou, and a bevy of beautiful insects, as well as skulls, antlers, snakeskin, and other photogenic “biofacts.” You’ll also get hands-on studio lighting instruction as you work with handlers, props, and backdrops to create beautifully striking photographs of your own. This workshop is a fantastic chance to expand your photographic repertoire with unique subjects and opportunities. Day one will begin with a lighting overview, followed by two full days photographing zoo animals in Newspace’s professional lighting studio! Manual camera proficiency and a digital SLR required. workshops A Kid’s-Eye View Saturday, January 19th 11-3pm $75 Come spend the afternoon with talented local children’s photographer Debbie Baxter, learning how to capture unique, memorable moments with your most important photographs. Debbie is a treasure trove of tips and tools for making portraits of kids shine. In this class, you’ll learn how to tell children’s stories through pictures. Whether you’re photographing kids when they’re wiggly, giggly, and full of pep or in quieter moments, this class will help you be better prepared to capture expressive images. They grow up quickly, so don’t miss this great opportunity to refine your skills! This class is suitable for beginning and intermediate shooters. Instructor: Debbie Baxter Intro to Studio Lighting Saturday, 2/2 10-4pm $105 This one-day workshop provides a thorough introduction to studio gear and lighting. You’ll learn how to control and manage lighting scenarios in the studio safely and to your best advantage while getting hands-on instruction in the use of strobe lights, light modifiers, and backgrounds. Students may work with film or digitally. This is a fantastic starter course for those wanting to pursue studio work and a recommended prerequisite for our advanced lighting classes. Instructor: Joshua Dommermuth Angela Cash Debbie Baxter Creative Lighting Sunday, 2/10 12-5pm $115 If you’ve taken an intro lighting class and are ready for the next step, this workshop is for you! Photographer Angela Cash will show you how to think outside the box with lighting and will work with you to create scenarios from the ground up using lighting to your creative advantage. You’ll get hands-on direction in the use of soft boxes, grid spots, gels, umbrellas, and reflectors as you see how the right lighting can really make a picture pop. You’ll also learn how to create “natural light” in a studio context and how to replicate the look of light coming from different sources. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to expand on and refine your technical skills so you’ll be better prepared to express your artistic vision. Prerequisite: Intro to Studio Lighting, or equivalent. Instructor: Angela Cash Conquering On-Camera Flash Sunday, 2/17 12-4pm $65 Winter is the perfect time to learn to use your flash. In this workshop, photographer Jason Kaplan will help you master the technical challenges of flash photography. Never pass up a photograph again because you don’t feel comfortable breaking out your flash! Never again ruin a roll of film because your flash isn’t synched with your shutter!
