Workshops Shooting from the Heart Sunday, 2/17 12-6pm $95 Have you ever wondered what it might be like to use your photography for a greater purpose? Have you ever wanted to do the kind of work you see in National Geographic? Many local non-profits and international NGO’s hire photographers to help document important humanitarian, conservation, or world relief issues and this can mean extremely rewarding work. In this workshop, you’ll study the non-profit market in the Portland Metro Area and discuss how to get assignment work targeting these issues. You’ll also learn documentary techniques targeted for non-profits and learn how to avoid some of the pitfalls unique to documenting humanitarian concerns. Photojournalist Joel Preston Smith is the author of Night of a Thousand Stars and Other Portraits of Iraq. His non-profit credits include Mercy Corps, Aid International, Northwest Medical Teams, Middle East Children’s Alliance and others. Instructor: Joel Preston Smith Joel Preston Smith Dale Strouse Darkrom Master Class Saturday, 2/23 10-5pm $115 This class is for photographers with fundamental darkroom skills already in place who wish to hone their technique on a more advanced level. In this workshop, you’ll have a chance to experiment with different developers, local bleaching, and selenium toning, and will see how different processes effect different papers. Master printer Dale Strouse will bring his method to life and show you how he translates tonalities from negative to print with truly luminous results. Prerequisite: Darkroom Two, or equivalent. Instructor: Dale Strouse Playing The Stock Market Saturday, 2/16 10-5pm $125 Have you ever thought about exploring stock photography? Erik Palmer and Marv Johnson from the Portland agency Fogstock lead this one-day workshop on how to break into the industry. You’ll learn how to strategize your shooting to make your work attractive to stock agencies and how to make your own photographic interests marketable. A demo stock shoot will get you thinking about how to manage quality control and overcome technical challenges. This is a great opportunity to get an insider’s look at the world of stock. Instructors: Erik Palmer and Marv Johnson Promote Yourself! Tuesday, 2/12 6:30-9:30pm $65 Promoting yourself as an artist can be a real challenge – but the payoffs are well worth it. If you’d like to show your work, but are unsure what galleries and other venues expect, this workshop is a must. You’ll learn about slide lists, pricing, copyright, releases, and editioning, as well as the legal concerns that effect artists. Digital classes & Workshops The Whole Shebang! Four Thursdays, 1/10-1/31 7-9:30pm $225 If you’re new to digital photography, a knowledgeable guide is an invaluable resource. In this hands-on, four-week class, you’ll be led through the entire digital process – from original file to finished photo. Class will cover everything from scanning, optimizing files, color conversion, monitor calibration and tonal adjustments, to output as websites or prints. You’ll get a comprehensive look at the digital imaging process and will be able to work with your own images as you refine your digital workflow. To be held at Fenixworkshop and Pushdot. Instructor: Austin Goodman Learning to Use Your Digital Camera Saturday, 1/26 3:30-6pm $65 Do you have a digital camera with more bells and whistles than you know what to do with? Meet the challenge head-on in this one-day workshop focusing on basic and intermediate controls for your digital camera. You’ll also learn how to manage your digital files and to prepare images for archiving and sharing. Instructor: Stu Mullenberg Austin Goodman Go with the Flow Four Wednesdays, 2/13 - 3/5 6:30-9:30pm $225 If you’ve made the transition to digital but have not yet developed a smooth shooting workflow, this class will get you well on your way. Pro photographer Andy Batt of Andy Batt Studio will guide you through the process of shooting efficiently in both studio and location situations. You’ll learn how to capture, download, backup, present, and transfer images smoothly and competently in this class. Learn how to get control of the process – instead of letting the process control you! This is a great class for those considering photo-assisting or commercial work. Prerequisite: Learning to Use Your Digital Camera. Short materials list online. Instructor: Andy Batt Online Photo Sharing Saturday, 3/1 11-3pm $75 Posting your photos to an online gallery is a great way to share with family and friends, to receive commentary on your work, to get better exposure, and even sell your work. And, it’s much easier than setting up a personal website. In this workshop, you’ll get a chance to see the many ways sharing sites are easier to control and maintain than websites and will be amazed at the level of customization possible. Sam Nichols, programmer extraordinaire for the photo sharing site SmugMug, will walk you through uploading pictures, customizing the design of your gallery, working with privacy tools, and ordering/taking orders for prints. Participants will receive free one-year pro memberships (worth $150) to SmugMug. Instructor: Sam Nichols Photo Assistant’s Crash Course Sunday, 3/9 10-4pm $125 Learn what it takes to be a commercial photo assistant in this hands-on day-workshop. The stakes are high, the money is good, and the savvy photo assistant can expect to keep busy year round. Seasoned pro Stu Mullenberg will walk you through the “dos” and “don’ts” of successful assisting. You’ll have a chance to work with different lighting scenarios and accustom yourself to various types of gear. You’ll also get a hands-on intro to basic file management in a digital workflow and learn how to market yourself, set rates, find work, invoice, and deal with clients so you’ll be prepared to compete in this demanding field.
