COMMUNITY FORGING A STRONGER CONNECTION The President of the Australian Medical Association (WA), Dr Richard Choong recently met the President of the Chung Wah Association, Sammy Yap, at the Association’s Nedlands headquarters to discuss common matters of interest. The meeting followed local publicity around Dr Choong’s election as President and mention of his Chinese heritage. Although not Chinese speaking, Dr Choong has long had a strong interest in China and the Chinese diaspora in Australia. Dr Choong arrived in Australia at the age of two years, and did not have the opportunity to learn Chinese. However his wife, Carolyn, is fluent in the language and they are ensuring their daughter Alexandra learns to speak the language of her ancestors. “I am well aware of the significant impact that Chinese immigrants have had on the development of Australia virtually since the arrival of the first fleet,” Dr Choong said. “For example I find it exciting that the first Chinese national to arrive in Western Australia landed just a few months after Perth was founded and many thousands of Chinese have contributed in a range of ways to life in the state since. “I am proud to be the first Chinese AMA (WA) President and am excited by the opportunity of working with Chung Wah in coming months,” he said. “I also look forward to developing my connections even further with the local Chinese community while president and beyond,” he added. Shared interests: President of the Chung Wah Association, Sammy Yap and President of the AMA (WA) Dr Richard Choong. The Chung Wah Association was established in 1909 and since then, has played a significant part in a range of issues in WA. The Association aims to promote the Chinese culture through its cultural groups – the Chung Wah Dragon and Lion Troupe, the Chung Wah Dance and the Chung Wah Chinese Instruments Orchestra. The Association also promotes inter-cultural exchange through its School Visit Program. To promote the learning of the Chinese language, the Association runs the Chung Wah Chinese School at three campuses on Saturdays of the school terms. The Chinese School is open to all. Currently there are about 1100 students enrolled at the schools. Another major program of the Association is the Community and Aged Care Services. Services provided include the Community Visitors Scheme, Centre-based Day Care, Panda Community Aged Care Packages, Domestic Assistance, Social Support, Transport, Day-long Respite Care and Migrant and Community Services. The Centrebased Day Care program has been extended to Vietnamese, Cambodian and Thai seniors in recent years.
