EVENT Walking the tightrope Maintaining work-life balance becomes particularly precarious for women looking to make their mark in medicine The inaugural Women in Medicine breakfast was well attended by a cross section of female doctors. (Right) Courtney Majda, President of Fremantle Hospital’s RMO Society welcomes attendees. On 22 September 2012, the AMA (WA) and MDA National jointly sponsored the Fremantle Hospital RMO Societies’ inaugural Women in Medicine breakfast. The participants heard from Associate Professor Paula Johnson, Respiratory and General Medicine Physician and Dr Amanda Foster, General Surgery Fellow – both from Fremantle Hospital. Dr Foster discussed work-life balance and the challenges she faced working in general surgery through her experience on the training program coupled with starting her family. A/Prof Johnson discussed the important role of mentorship and teaching based on her experiences as a physician and academic. Dr Foster pointed out it was a challenge trying to balance safe working hours with the need to achieve a certain number of procedures to meet the expectations of the general surgical training program. She had several tips for the participants: At work: • Love what you do, do what you love • Collect mentors • Aim for perfection (after all, this is what our patients deserve). At home: • Try not to feel guilty • Accept help • Be flexible • Accept that nobody’s perfect. A/Prof Johnson discussed her experience working in the UK and how she was fortunate to find many supportive female consultants who assisted her greatly, albeit that some of her greatest supporters have been male consultants. Other advice A/Prof Johnson offered was: • Opportunities may arise, that at first glance do not appear to be part of your initial direction. But these can subsequently lead to other greater opportunities. • Ensure that you have something else other than purely clinical work as part of your consultant career. • Put boundaries around your family life as medicine will attempt to infiltrate every aspect of your world if you allow it. • It is vitally important to find and foster mentorships both for yourself and of others. The AMA (WA) was proud to be a part of this inaugural event for Fremantle given the work that the DiT Committee is currently undertaking via its Working Party on part-time employment seeking to establish part-time and flexible working arrangements and better work-life balance as an accepted and embedded part of employment options within WA Health. ■ Looking back: A/Prof Paula Johnson discussed her experience working in the UK and how she was fortunate to find many supportive female consultants.
