By 30 September, three weeks after closure, <strong>the</strong> pycnocline was sharper (∂ρ/∂z ~ 10<br />

kg/m 4 ) and <strong>the</strong> density <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower water column had increased owing to <strong>the</strong> intrusion <strong>of</strong><br />

more saline waters (Figure 3.30). Surface wind stress maintains a 2m-thick mixed<br />

surface layer (Ri < 0.25), but high Ri is observed in <strong>the</strong> pycnocline, in spite <strong>of</strong> shear<br />

associated with <strong>the</strong> wind-driven return flow (described in section 3.2.3).<br />

The October 5 breach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inlet and associated increases in river and tidal flows<br />

resulted in a significant export <strong>of</strong> salt. On 6 October, <strong>the</strong> pycnocline is 3.5m lower, but<br />
