REDCLIFFE LEAGUES CLUBHOUSE NEWS NEWS Cause for celebration with Dolphins THE Redcliffe District Rugby League Football Club was recently announced as one of the successful organisations to apply to be an Our Village 101 Causes. The purpose of the 101 Causes program is to raise funds for organisations and strengthen profiles of community groups within the Moreton Bay Regional Council. Run by the Our Village Foundation, a notfor-profit organisation that aims to benefit the MBRC via a network of businesses, likeminded individuals, government and community-based organisations, the programs starts on July 1 and finishes on June 30 next year. During the next 12 months, the Redcliffe Dolphins will participate in fundraising platforms coordinated by Our Village and the 101 Causes platform which will also assist the Dolphins by promoting our club, our events and fundraisers around the region. Staff are currently in the planning process to set clear goals and objectives for the year ahead which they hope to lead to raising more money for future projects for the juniors. 101 Causes provides the Dolphins with a cause manager to offer professional assistance and advice to put the club’s plan into place. This will assist in creating a tailored partnership with the Dolphins and Our Village Foundation that starts with a 101 Causes webpage for supporters to nominate the Dolphins as their preferred organisation to support. The first incentive-based program the Dolphins will participate in is the upcoming 2014 Redcliffe Festival, which is coordinated by the Our Village Foundation. The festival will operate at two different locations on the Peninsula and in order to deliver such a huge program will primarily be run by a volunteer workforce. Volunteers are now being called for to nominate themselves to work at the event in a variety of different areas ranging from admin work, food prep, customer service, marketing, setting up and pack down right through to the clean-up after the event is all wrapped up. The 2014 Redcliffe Festival will run across the September weekend of Friday 5th to Sunday 7th with: • Spring Break Beach Party – an under-age music concert at Pelican Park • Kite Fest Live – an Aussie rock concert at Pelican Park • Redcliffe Kite Fest – fly your kite at Pelican Park amidst the family-oriented celebrations including rides, cooking displays, animal farms, aerobatic displays and more • The Jetty Fiesta – Brazilian/Latin street performances, stage-based entertainment and a huge fireworks display with twilight markets and laser light installations • Historic First Settlement celebrations via Redcliffe Remembers on the Sunday Incentives for event volunteers include a Redcliffe Festival T-shirt, cap, certificate of appreciation, food and beverage while working (on the Festival weekend) and voucher booklet. In a tribute to the 2014 sponsors of the Dolphins juniors, players, along with their team coach and manager, will march at the Intrust Super Cup home game against Mackay Cutters. The event has been held each year for as long as any of the current staff can remember. Junior development manager Steve Peoples said: “There is always the excitement over which teams get to sit in the Village Motors utes that lead out the parade. Our Cause. Volunteers nominating themselves to volunteer under the 101 Cause banner simply nominate the Redcliffe DRLFC as their Cause on their form and return it to the Redcliffe Leagues Club Reception to be passed onto football club staff. Alternatively forms can be emailed directly to the Dolphins 101 Cause leader Kirsty Fields (relations manager) at kirsty@ redcliffeleagues.com.au Each volunteer who completes a four-hour volunteering shift will see Our Village Foundation pay $10 for every hour worked on the Redcliffe Festival into the Dolphins 101 Cause fundraising account. CLUBHOUSE NEWS PNG has gone ahead in leaps and bounds UNLIKE most of the touring party to Papua New Guinea last month, I had been to our nearest neighbor before. I played with Redcliffe sides that took on the Port Moresby Vipers team in the then Queensland Cup in 1996-97. I could not believe the improvement in so many areas since I was left there. Infrastructure throughout has gone ahead ten-fold while much of Port Moresby has changed from tin sheds into a modern city. Kokopo is the capital of East New Britain Province, a 90-minute flight from Port Moresby and is more of a resort town than a city. The facilities were adequate and the hospitality fantastic, but we were there on a mission. We put in a good physical first half, however our second 40 minutes was not up to that standard and we made too many errors. Although we had a sizeable lead, once the local side got a sniff of a comeback they came at us with the crowd right behind them. ★ ★ ★ ★ WHAT a pity that Petero Civoniceva could not make the trip to PNG. Petero is a national hero there, especially after his many visits as an ambassador for our code. We are happy to work in with his schedule and he already has turned out against Burleigh and again late last month against Souths. I was quite happy with his outing against the Bears. He holds that middle section of the park intact and even managed to pop up a few passes. And so far the Redcliffe Dolphins have snared more than their fair share. A total of four Dolphins are in the 18-man Queensland Rangers team to take on NSW Country at Rockhampton’s Browne Park on July 12. Our reps are winger Brett Coutts, prop Caleb Hoffmann and interchange forwards James Crombie and Paul Ivan. They were selected from last month’s state carnival at Owen Park. Congratulations also have to go to four young Dolphins who will wear the Queensland jersey this month. Sam Leach, Josh Kerr, Nathan Watts and Jeremy Skelton will fly the Maroon flag against NSW Country at Rocky on the same day. All four played in the Dolphins Mal Meninga Cup side earlier this season before joining Brendan Lam’s Colts squad following the completion of that competition. For Nathan, it is the second time he has been selected in the side after coming off the bench in the corresponding match in Lismore last year. In the past the Dolphins have scored a number of berths, however our spot on the ladder and inconsistent form will make it hard for our players. One though who does stand out is Aaron Whitchurch, who has probably been the pick of our squad all season. His pace and size, as well as experience at the NRL level, makes him an ideal selection, even if it might be off the bench. Aaron can not only handle the centre and wing roles, he is big enough to fit into the backrow. Our fans know that if we can string a few wins together we will zoom up what is a congested table. We might be lingering near the bottom but we’re not too many points away from a semi-final berth and it’s crucial that we are playing our best football towards the end of the season. ★ ★ ★ ★ A FAMILIAR face popped up against us when we played Sunshine Coast. Tom Murphy has returned from a short stint with the Canterbury Bulldogs and found a spot with his home team the Falcons. Always fit, he was short of a run against us after injury curtailed his time with the Dogs. I’m sure we will see more of him in the seasons to come. Reunion for schoolboys BETWEEN 1960 (the inaugural year) and 2001, more than 700 boys represented Redcliffe in the Vic Jensen Cup competition. For many of these years, selection in this team was the greatest achievement a Redcliffe primary schoolboy player could attain in rugby league, unless gaining state representation. Originally a six stone competition, it then became a 50kg one and for the final 11 years an open competition. Sadly this competition ended in 2001 with a change of focus on inter-school sport, fewer male teachers and the ever present threat of litigation, among contributing factors. After one match in FOGS A grade which included nailing a try, Mika found himself in the top side for the away trip to Papua New Guinea. “Con went really well for us in PNG and just needs time to run into condition,” Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay said. “Con played a dozen matches for the Knights in the NRL and then had two years in the English Super League before returning to New Zealand. “This season he was in Gladstone working and was playing with the local side. We got tipped off through Kristian Wolff about him and I spoke to Bluey Southern, who said he was way too good for the local competition up there.” Mika, 24, spent two seasons with Hull KR, which included a Challenge Cup semifinal against Wigan. Devastating in defence with his big hits at times, the Tongan can also be a formidable force with the ball in hand, with reward coming through an Exiles call-up. Mika, who joined the Dolphins last week on the recommendation of former North Queensland Cowboy Southern, caught Lindsay’s eye in the FOGS Cup match. “Con was pretty good in FOGS and we had some good reports on him from people we know are pretty good judges of footballers,” Lindsay said.
