UFO Times, <strong>The</strong> Guardian, Yorkshire Post, Bradford Telegraph & Argus, Magonla, Northern Earth<br />

His article, Rocking the Alien, dealing with pop music's fascination with UFOs was the cover feature<br />

article for the July 1996 issue of Fortean Times and was also printed In the G2 section of <strong>The</strong><br />

DAVID CLARKE<br />

Ph.D in English Cultural Tradition and Language, University of Sheffield (1999)<br />

<strong>The</strong>sis subject was the cult of the human head in Celtic mythology, British tradition and folklore.<br />

SA (Hans) dual honours Archaeology and Medieval History at Sheffield University (graduated<br />

1990).<br />

As a UFOiogist, I was a founder member of the Independent UFO Network (tUN) in 1987 and of the<br />

UFO Investigator's Network (UFOIN) in 1999. I have also served as a Council member of the British<br />

UFO Research Association (BUFORA) in the late 1980s.<br />

As a journalist, I have worked for ten years on local newspapers including the Rotherham<br />

Advertiser and Sheffield Star and now work freelance as a journalist and<br />

full time as an author.<br />

I hold a Honorary Research Fellowship in the National Centre for English Cultural Tradition and<br />

Language, University of Sheffield, where I teach Traditions of Supernatural Belief, a 2nd and 3rd<br />

year undergraduate option In the School of English.<br />

My specialist areas of research interest are:<br />

• contemporary legend and belief: specifically 'space age' folklore (conspiracy theories,'flying<br />

saucer' and UFO beliefs);<br />

• rumour transmission and rum our-panics within a supernatural context;<br />

• the interface between archaeology, oral tradition and belief;<br />

• custom and belief, specifically in the context of northern England and the Peak District<br />
