Urinary electrolytes<br />

The measurement <strong>of</strong> urinary electrolytes <strong>and</strong> osmolality can be used<br />

to distinguish pre-renal AKI from intrinsic AKI (Table 22). The measurements<br />

<strong>of</strong> urinary sodium are not accurate if loop diuretics have<br />

been administered within the previous 12 hours or there is pre-existing<br />

chronic kidney disease.<br />
