Las guerras migratorias de Jeb Bush
Jeb Bush, autor del nuevo libro
llamado, apropiadamente,
“Immigration Wars: Forging an
American Solution”, nunca se
imaginó ser una víctima de las
guerras migratorias en Estados
Unidos. Y menos que el principal
daño se lo causaría él mismo. Pero
eso precisamente pasó.
En estos días Bush es uno de
los republicanos más influyentes
del país. Exgobernador de Florida
y hermano e hijo de presidentes,
frecuentemente se le menciona
como probable candidato presidencial
en 2016. Es, además,
el miembro del clan Bush más
estrechamente conectado con la
comunidad hispana, gracias a su
matrimonio con Columba Bush
(antes Columba Garnica Gallo),
nacida en México, y por su dominio
del idioma español.
Por eso, su libro sobre el conflicto
migratorio en Estados Unidos
se esperaba con muchísima
expectativa; si Bush apoyaba la
idea de una reforma migratoria,
eso ayudaría enormemente a
conseguir votos republicanos en
el congreso. Y sí, efectivamente,
salió el libro este mes, escrito en
colaboración con el abogado Clint
Bolick, y Bush propuso una reforma
migratoria, pero no exactamente
la que millones de hispanos
y de inmigrantes esperaban.
Propuso una “residencia permanente”
para inmigrantes indocumentados,
pero sin una ruta hacia
la ciudadanía.
Bush escribió: “La residencia
permanente no debe llevar a la
ciudadanía. Es absolutamente vital
a la integridad de nuestro sistema
de inmigración que las acciones
tengan consecuencias – en este
caso – permitir que permanezcan
aquellos que han violado las leyes,
pero no que puedan obtener los
deseados frutos de la ciudadanía”.
La ciudadanía plena sería “una
recompensa no merecida por una
conducta que no podemos darnos
el lujo de permitir”.
De pronto, en lugar de liderar
el debate migratorio, Bush tuvo
que ponerse a la defensiva y recibir
ataques de las principales
organizaciones hispanas, comentaristas
e hasta algunos de sus
colegas republicanos. Esta idea
en el libro de Bush tendría graves
consecuencias: Dividiría a Estados
Unidos en dos clases (ciudadanos
de primera y el resto) y crearía un
nuevo grupo social discriminado,
con menos derechos y sin posibilidades
de mejorar su futuro.
Pero ese no es el “American way”,
dividir y limitar derechos no es
la manera norteamericana de resolver
los problemas.
“Immigration Wars” fue escrito
cuando algunos republicanos
creían que Mitt Romney – cuyo
apoyo a la idea de hacer la vida
tan insoportable para los indocumentados
que ellos se “autodeportarían”
es ampliamente
conocida – podría realmente llegar
a la presidencia. Claro, en ese contexto,
con un Presidente Romney y
la amenaza de la auto-deportación,
la idea de legalizar a millones
(aunque no tuvieran ciudadanía)
hubiera sonado revolucionaria
y hasta visionaria. Pero el país
cambió muy rápido y el libro se
quedó en el pasado.
La elección del 6 de noviembre
del 2012, con el 71 por ciento
de los latinos votando por el
presidente Obama, convenció a
muchos en Estados Unidos de
que la reforma migratoria era
una promesa pendiente que urgía
resolver. Atrás quedaron las leyes
antiinmigrantes de Arizona y
Alabama y la absurda idea de deportar
a 11 millones de personas
indocumentadas.
Una reciente encuesta de Latino
Decisions encontró que para el
58 por ciento de los latinos la reforma
migratoria es el asunto más
importante que tiene que arreglar
el congreso. Y los republicanos
saben que tienen que apoyar una
reforma migratoria si quieren recuperar
parte del voto latino. Pero,
atención republicanos: apoyar una
legalización sin ciudadanía no va
a ayudarles en nada a recuperar el
voto hispano. Al contrario. Es tan
mala idea como lo fue la auto-deportación.
Ciertamente, millones
de indocumentados que hoy son
perseguidos aceptarían cualquier
cosa con tal de no ser deportados
y tener un permiso de trabajo. Pero
una de las maravillas de Estados
Unidos es la idea que todos somos
iguales, independientemente de
donde vengamos, de qué color sea
nuestra piel o de la religión que
profesemos. Por eso la idea central
del libro de Bush está equivocada
y está dañando los esfuerzos de sus
propios compañeros republicanos
por lograr una reforma migratoria
justa, integral y que no discrimine.

Moving forward, pay it back
By State Rep. Lyle Larson represents District 122
Over the course of the past few
decades, several elected officials
in Texas have taken advantage of
incumbency and access to state
funded security detail and travel.
Many of them have traveled
across the country, and even the
world, accompanied by security
guards provided by the Department
of Public Safety (DPS).
Travel, meals and lodging for the
security guards are also paid for
by the state.
Between August 2011 and
January 2012, the time Gov. Perry
was running for president, $1.8
million of taxpayer money was
spent on the Governor’s security
detail while he was traveling out
of state. Another $1.8 million
went to cover overtime for the
DPS officers conducting executive
protection.
Though Rick Perry’s campaign
fund paid the direct costs of Governor
and Mrs. Perry’s travel for
fundraising and campaign events,
as a sitting governor, officers from
the Texas Department of Public
Safety provide his personal protection,
even if the travel is not
directly related to an official function
of the office of the governor.
The state of Texas pays for the
travel expenses of these officers,
including flights, lodging, and
food, as well as their salaries and
overtime.
Perry had the largest security
contingent of any candidate in
the 2012 race except for President
Obama, and the only one on
the Republican side financed by
taxpayers. The total spending of
taxpayer dollars on Gov. Perry’s
travel during the 160 days of his
presidential campaign exceeds
$3.7 million, or an average of
$23,165 per day.
DPS also provided personal
security to Gov. Bush during his
presidential campaign for 455
days, from January 1999 to March
2000, when the Secret Service
took over his protection. Public
expenditures for that time period
totaled $3.9 million. Adjusted
for inflation, that works out to an
average of $11,428 per day.
Travel costs for security officers
can add up quickly. Between
2004 and 2010, Gov. Perry incurred
$1 million in taxpayerfunded
security costs for 23
foreign trips, including $58,775
for a 2009 trip to Israel.
Between 2010 and 2013, the
costs skyrocketed to $4.2 million
for out-of-state travel. Security
for an 8-day trip to Italy cost the
state nearly $70,000, not including
officers’ overtime pay. A
September trip to Kansas City,
MO for a fundraiser for U.S. Rep.
Sam Graves, who campaigned for
Perry in Iowa in 2011, cost DPS
over $10,000.
Providing security for our
governor while on official business
is a legitimate and necessary
function of state government. The
problem comes with the lack of
transparency in the purpose of
out-of-state travel. There is a lot
of gray area between what is “official
business” and what is meant
to benefit an individual or raise his
or her national profile.
This issue is why I proposed
HB 160. The bill requires all
statewide officeholders to file a
disclosure with the Texas Ethics
Commission if they use state
funds for travel or security outside
of Texas. The Ethics Commission
will be able to determine if the
travel was truly for an official
purpose. If state funds go toward
any travel for personal or political
reasons, the official would be
required to reimburse the state.
There is a strong nationwide
precedent for requiring officeholders
to refund personal security
expenses to the state. In July
2012, Governor Nikki Haley of
South Carolina refunded the state
$7,700 for her security for out-of-

Michael L. Collins wrote a very
good book in 2008 titled, Texas
Devils: Rangers & Regulars on
the Lower Rio Grande, 1846-1861.
In this research work, Collins lays
out the infamous history of the
Texas Rangers, which can only
be described as an armed body of
white supremacists. He explains
the history of Jack Hays as a Texas
Ranger and it does not resemble
the fictional Chuck Norris example
of the real history of “Rangers.”
Jack Hays proved to live up to
his name, the “Devil,” as poor
Mexicans called him. Hays was
part of the “Texas Devils,” which
was the term that Mexicans used
to refer to the Texas Rangers as a
whole because of their racist acts
of murder against the Mexican
population.
Jack Hays engaged in genocidal
campaigns against the Comanche
and Mexican in small and major
battles. It was not because he was
so great and fearless, that he was
able to defeat a large number of
Indians in a few battles, but it was
a simple matter of superior fire
power. Hays did become famous
for murdering Mexicans and Indians
alike with the use of the newly
invented Colt Revolver. The myths
about Hays are highly exaggerated
and completely ignore the fact that
the Colt Revolver helped him to
become falsely lionized by racist
Texas story tellers and myth makers,
including some at the Texas
Ranger Museum.
Another racist marauder and
Texas Ranger was the infamous
John “Rip” Ford. In 1858 he was
commissioned to carry out a genocidal
war against Native Americans
culminating in two battles
near the Canadian River. In 1859
he was sent to the Rio Grande to
suppress the activities of Juan Cortina,
a Mexican revolutionary that
refused to accept the racist tactics
of the Texas Rangers and the stealing
of Mexican lands. Many Texans
are coming to realize that those
who have been given the rank of
hero in Texas were nothing less
that killers, racists, and pro-slavery
leaders. The border between the
United States and Mexico was
fixed by white supremacists at the
Rio Grande River. This situation
resulted in several wars with a
Mexican revolutionary named
Juan (John) Cortina. Cortina was
joined by Mexicans, Indians, African
Americans, and some whites
in his war against racialized white
Texans.
Many of the racialized whites
that came to Texas were hell-bent
on using the law to steal lands
that had been given to Mexicans
in the 1700s. When Mexicans
refused to give up their land
they were murdered, burned out,
harassed, brutalized, imprisoned,
and “legally” lynched by Texas
Rangers and mercenaries. This
was accomplished through the use
of hired killers that included the

ser una víctima más de las guerras
migratorias.

She also repaid about $10,000
for her use of the state plane, after
finding out about a 2011 budget
clause that prohibits state officials
from using the state plane for bill
signings or press conferences.
The refund represents a quarter of
her state plane usage since taking
office in January 2011.
Missouri Lieutenant Governor
Peter Kinder repaid over $35,000
in hotel bills from various political
functions he attended in
St. Louis during his five years in
office from 2006 to 2011, after
facing criticism over his unethical
use of public funds.
HB 160 is an effort to increase
openness and promote responsible
stewardship of our state’s
limited resources. Letting the
sun shine throughout the hidden
corners of government enhances
efficiency and prevents corruption
from all of our elected officials.
We need to demand greater accountability
and greater transparency
from our representatives. At
a time when Texas faces budget
shortfalls and cuts to important
state programs, we cannot afford
to waste money on the personal
objectives and ambitions of any
individual.
Texas Rangers, the Knights of the
Golden Circle, and other criminal
elements. In 1859, the area known
as “The Valley” became drenched
in blood as John Cortina shot the
sheriff of Brownsville preventing
him from continuing to pistol whip
an old Mexican man.
In the aftermath of the shooting
of the Brownsville sheriff, a war
was started between those loyal
to Cortina and the slave owners of
Texas. Many African Americans
escaped from slavery with the
help of John Cortina into Mexico.
In more recent times one of the
most despicable Texas Rangers
was a Captain A. Y. Allee, who
was known as a brutal, racist, and
ignorant man amongst people of
color who came in contact with
him. Captain Allee was known
for his anti-Mexican and antiblack
attitude and was involved
in violence against minorities over
the years. He too has been falsely
lionized on the Texas Ranger Museum
website.

Usted puede entrar en Internet y
ver si alguno de esos agresores
vive en su vecindario. También
puede encontrar información
como una fotografía y la lista de
crímenes cometidos por el individuo.
¿Apoyaría usted tal modelo
para un Registro de Violencia
Doméstica? ¡Por supuesto! Sería
un registro que le permitiría saber
si tal persona está a su alrededor.
El Representante Estatal republicano
por Dallas, Jason Villalba, ha
presentado una medida que establece
un registro de abusadores
domésticos en serie. Sus nombres
serían incluidos, y al igual que el
Registro de Agresores Sexuales,
también proveería fotografías, fechas
de nacimiento y direcciones.
La información de este proyecto,
al igual que el del Registro de
Agresores Sexuales, estaría disponible
para cualquiera. Además
estar en el registro sería obligatorio
para aquellas personas convictas
por cierto número determinado
de casos de violencia doméstica.
Esto funcionaría como el Registro
de Agresores Sexuales y una
persona podría estar en la lista por
el resto de su vida.
Desafortunadamente, existe una
cláusula estilo “El Padrino”. Esto
significa que el registro propuesto
sería pertinente solo a esos individuos
convictos después que la
medida fuera promulgada por el
gobernador.
Tal como está la medida hasta
ahora, los colegas de Villalba no
han determinado el número de
veces que una ofensa haya sido
cometida por una persona para
que este agresor sea incluido en
el registro. Algunos piden que
sea tres veces, pero el legislador
de Dallas quiere que el número
mágico sea dos.
Villalba ha dicho que el propósito
de su propuesta es “avergonzar”
a quienes cometen violencia doméstica
para hacer que ese acto
de bajeza de pegarle a una esposa
o novia sea aún más desagradable.
Asimismo, añadió que el registro
permitiría a las personas que
tienen interacción con algún
agresor tener información sobre
ese pasado indeseable.
La medida también tiene sus
méritos. Las mujeres que están
saliendo con alguien nuevo pueden
revisar el perfil pasado de esta
persona para evitar convertirse en
una víctima. Y los padres pueden
hacer lo mismo.
La violencia doméstica está
fuera de control. Y cualquiera que
lo niegue se parece al avestruz
que esconde la cabeza en la arena
o a los tres monos en donde uno
se tapa los ojos, otro, los oídos, y
otro, la boca.
Si Villaba tiene éxito en conseguir
que su medida sea aprobada,
él siente que empezará un
fenómeno dominó, y que será la
primera parte de una serie de propuestas
encaminadas a reprimir el
creciente problema de la violencia
doméstica en el noviazgo y en la
familia.

“We have a Pope!”
Last Wednesday morning Cardinal
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a
member of the Conclave meeting
behind closed doors at the Vatican
in the Sistine Chapel.
He, along with 114 other Cardinals
gathered to select a successor
to the retiring Pope Emeritus Benedict
XVI. The voting began at the
start of the week. In all, there are
five ballots cast and after the fifth
vote white smoke was seen coming
from above the Chapel. This is the
signal those in St. Peter’s Square
were awaiting. A Pope had been
elected.
Wednesday evening, Cardinal
Jorge Mario Bergoglio emerged on
the balcony on the sacred Chapel as
Pope Francis. The first time Francis
had been taken as the name of the
Holy Father. A name he chose in
honor of St. Francis of Assisi, a
saint who was defined by his love
of God’s creations. Were he alive
today he would surely be chastised
because he believed in sharing the
wealth.
His selection as Pope included
many other firsts. He is the first
Pope from the Americas. Up until
now all previous Pontiffs were from
Europe. His predecessor is from
Germany and his predecessor from
Poland. The last time, an outsider,
in a manner speaking, was Pope
Gregory III. His reign was in 8th
century.
Pope Francis is the first Jesuit to
bear the title of His Holy Eminence.
He entered the Society of Jesus in
the late 50s where he studied to become
a priest at the Jesuit Seminary
in Villa Devoto and was ordained in
as the 60s came to an end.
He was until last year, the Archbishop
of Buenos Aires. Now he’s
the head of the Catholic Church
whose numbers are well more than
one billion.
As Francis begins his holiest of
journeys his plate is already full.
Those billion-plus followers will
be closely watching his every action.
One of those actions will be is
how he deals with the sexual abuse
scandal involving priests. Will his
resolve be enough to appease the
victims?
In many ways it is being said he
is reminiscent of Pope John Paul
II. When John Paul was named the
Bishop of Rome, it was difficult
to get His Excellency to wear the
traditional red satin slippers, saying
he was not used to something like
this. Eventually he became accustom
to them.
Late Wednesday night Pope
Francis reportedly made his way to
a local church in Rome and joined
in the celebration of the Mass, with
parishioners and clergy. Thereafter,
he returned to his hotel room,
picked up his luggage from the
room he rented for his stay while
he and fellow Cardinals decided on
who should succeed Benedict and
paid his bill.
From listening to those that knew
him he’ll bring new blood to the
church, even though he’s 76. A new
blood many say is needed to revive
the church.

Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller talks about the time he spent

a new hope

Siller was still in silent prayer for
the newly elected Pope Francis
on Wednesday following the
announcement of the new Pope.
In that prayer, one could imagine
the great respect as well as the
boundless thanks to God being
given for its newly designated
Catholic spiritual leader.
Pope Francis is the first Jesuit
elected Pope. The Jesuits
originally did missionary work
in 1534 in a Roman Catholic
order of priests and spread Catholicism
as well as education
and have long been considered
a traditional order.
Pope Francis has continued
that exact resolute and unwavering
traditional Catholic reverence
in his career in the Catholic
Church. Originally ordained as
a priest in 1969, in 1998 he became
an Archbishop in Buenos
Aires and then gained the title
of Cardinal.
Archbishop Siller recalls meeting
the Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio,
now Pope Francis, of Argentina
before he became Pope. He
remembers him being “well
prepared, solid and very kind
and humble”.
Pope Francis is from Argentina,
one of the largest Catholic
countries in the word.
“Latin America has been working
together in such a way and
there are so many Hispanics in the
United States and Canada that it
helps to see that it was in need for
the church to communicate to all
Catholics through the Americas.
“ said Archbishop Siller.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio
was very connected with the
poor and disenfranchised. His
history also shows that he was
also able to live the values of the
gospel very strongly.
He has a very grounded history
with modern economics.
It seems this is a great choice
for the modern world and that
he will be able to communicate
that very easily in a way that
previous Popes have not yet
accomplished. In doing that, he
will be able to teach a lot to the
people of the church and to demonstrate
through leadership that
the Catholic Church will offer
hope though faith.

El mundo se regocijó con el
anuncio del Vaticano que Jorge
Mario Bergoglio es el nuevo
Papa. ¿Quién no? Después de
todo, él es el papa Francisco, el
primero en usar ese nombre, el
primer Papa de las américas.
El papa Francisco fue arzobispo
de Buenos Aires previamente
a su elección. Sin embargo, él
consideró su retiro de dicho cargo
debido a su edad. Y ahora él es el
Papa. Esto genera una pregunta:
¿Cuánto durará su papado?
El papa Francisco tiene 76
años, solo un par de años más
joven que su predecesor, el papa
Benedicto XVI. Benedicto fue
elegido a la edad de 78 años,
siendo el Papa más adulto elegido
desde 1730. Entonces ¿Los dos
años de diferencia ayudarán?
Muchos consideran la renuncia
del papa Benedicto como una
mala decisión. Fue muy duramente
criticado y generó muy
poca simpatía hacía a él cuando
esto se dio a conocer en las noticias.
Después de todo, Juan Pablo
II, su predecesor, se mantuvo en
el cargo 20 años a pesar de su
quebrantada condición de salud.

“Tú necesitas estar en la cima
de tu carrera para un puesto como
ese, y es una responsabilidad
encontrar a alguien quien pueda
hacerlo cuando tú no puedes. Pobre
Juan Pablo que siguió yendo
y viniendo a pesar de que estaba
enfermo y que le dolía. Él hizo lo
correcto”, añadió.
Adair agregó que lo que Benedicto
hizo sentó un precedente
para los futuros papas del mundo:
la opción de renunciar.
El papa Francisco luce sano, y
es poco probable que se vaya a retirar
rápidamente. Sin embargo, él
ahora tiene la opción de hacerlo.
“No me sorprendería si otros
papas se retiran más temprano. Es
una opción muy viable. A menos
que él realmente se enferme repentinamente,
creo que Francisco
estará aquí por mucho tiempo”,
añadió el académico.
El Papa es visto ahora como
un ícono de la cristiandad, y
personificación de la bondad,
por eso muchos orarán por el
papa Francisco. Ellos pedirán
para él muchos años de buena
salud y mentalidad para proveer
sabiduría a los billones de católicos
y la gente que buscará en él
una guía.

El “cash” es muy poderoso.
Cuando carga billetes de $100 en
su bolsillo, usted sabe que le va a
doler cuando llega el tiempo de
entregarlo. Duele gastar en efectivo,
¿a poco, no?
El efectivo le ayuda a gastar
menos porque es emocional. El
efectivo también es muy visual, no
es como el dinero electrónico que
se transfiere de computadora a computadora;
es físico. No es lo mismo
que pagar con una tarjeta.
El efectivo es dinero verdadero,
real. El efectivo también comunica
el sentido de inmediato, ahora mismo.
No es como un cheque donde
tiene que depositarlo y confirmar la
cuenta y en 5 días tiene su dinero.
Estamos hablando de: “¡Estoy
listo y me lo llevo AHORA MIS-
MO!”. Cuando llego con billetes
de $100 no existe esa inquietud de
que si va a pasar la tarjeta o si me
aprueban el crédito.
El efectivo es trato hecho, ya se
hizo, es un compromiso, es emocional
y vamos a negociar si pongo
el dinero debajo de sus narices. Si
no tiene efectivo usted le falta la
herramienta más importante para
negociar. Cuando gasta en efectivo
usted lo siente. Hay un enlace
emocional con el efectivo que no
existe con cualquier otra cosa. Mc-
Donald’s hizo un estudio y se dieron
cuenta que la gente que compra con
plástico gasta 47 por ciento más que
el que paga en efectivo. El que llega
con tarjeta compra todo, a todos
en el restaurante antes de sentir la
sensación de que ha gastado dinero.

Abren dos nuevos centros financieros
en el oeste y este de la ciudad

El Concejal del Distrito 5,
David Medina, fue quien se
encargó de guiar a líderes de
la comunidad y a residentes
para que lograran abrir dos
nuevos centros financieros en
San Antonio, los San Antonio
Financial Empowerment Centers
(SAFECs) en las zonas este
y oeste de la ciudad.
Los dos centros ofrecen
asesoría financiera personalizada,
objetiva y profesional para
los residentes de la ciudad, y
bajo ningún costo.
Sus oficinas se encuentran localizadas
en The Neighborhood
Place, que se ubica en el 3014
Rivas St., y en Claude Black
Community Center, ubicado en
el 2805 E. Commerce St.
San Antonio es una de las
cinco ciudades de los Estados
Unidos que han abierto centros
de asesoría gracias a una concesión
de $3.4 millones otorgados
por el fondo Cities for Financial
Empowerment (CFE).
La CFE fue fundada por
filántropos del programa de
negocios Bloomberg (Bloomberg
Philanthropies Mayors
Challen ge), el cual se identifica
como una competencia que ha
inspirado a las ciudades del
país a generar ideas y motivarse
para que puedan resolver retos
y otros factores importantes de
su ciudad.
Fueron 20 finalistas anunciados,
y cinco ganadores. Dentro
de los premiados resultó
Houston, TX, con $1 millón.
San Antonio fue una de las 305
ciudades invitadas.
El ganador del primer lugar
fue Providence, Rhode Island,
ciudad a la que se le hizo entrega
de $5 millones.
“Esta inversión en la educación
financiera de las familias
tan trabajadoras de San Antonio
es muy importante para que
puedan salir adelante”, expresó
el alcalde Julián Castro en un
comunicado de prensa de la
ciudad de San Antonio.
“Por medio de este proyecto
de Bloomberg y de CFE, San
Antonio continúa transformando
a su comunidad por medio
del conocimiento y el alcance”,
añadió.
Se espera que los centros que
se encuentren en San Antonio,
en Denver, CO; Lansing, MI;
Nashville, TN, y en Filadelfia,
puedan servir a más de 30,000
personas durante tres años.
Los centros contarán con
asesores financieros profesionales
que proporcionarán a los
clientes ayuda personalizada y
servirán de guía para que las
familias resuelvan problemas
financieros, para que aprendan
a manejar y pagar sus deudas,
abran cuentas de banco asequibles,
logren crear un buen
crédito, y pongan en orden sus
cuentas.
Por su parte, el Concejal
Medina aseguró que el nuevo
recurso servirá para que las
familias se inspiren y lleven de
mejor manera sus cuentas.
“La asesoría financiera gratuita
es un recurso inspirador y
muy emocionante para las familias
y residentes del oeste de la
ciudad y de todo San Antonio”,
expresó el Concejal Medina.
“La Ciudad y otros socios participantes
están entusiasmados
de poder anunciar la apertura
de estos centros que servirán de
gran ayuda a nuestras familias y
a toda la comunidad”.

Hablando de Nuestra Gente
El ejercicio ayuda a aliviar el
dolor en las articulaciones

No importa que sea en las
rodillas, los hombros, dedos
o las caderas, el dolor en las
articulaciones es un problema
común.
En promedio, cada mes, casi
un tercio de los norte estadounidenses
sienten dolor articular,
según los Centros para el Control
y la Prevención de Enfermedades.
Para los norte estadounidenses
de edad avanzada el culpable
común es la osteoartritis. El
problema empeora con el peso
adicional que las articulaciones
cargan debido al sobrepeso que
a veces va subiendo a medida
que pasan los años.
Sin embargo, no importa qué
le duela, usted puede hacer
algo todos los días para sentirse
mejor, el ejercicio. Esto
puede parecer contrario a la
intuición. Después de todo, si le
duele un codillo u hombro cuando
levanta una bolsa llena de
mandado, ¿qué sentirá cuando
empiece a hacer lagartijas o a
levantar pesas?
De hecho, usted arriesga lastimarse
más cuando evita mover
una extremidad porque le duele
la articulación. Los músculos
pueden debilitarse, haciendo
un efecto dominó que resulta
en otros problemas de la salud.
Es por eso que una de las
cosas más importantes que les
digo a mis pacientes es que
salgan y hagan actividad física.
Se sentirá mejor y tendrá más
energía y, créamelo o no, tendrá
menos dolor en las articulaciones.
Realmente no tiene desventajas
el hacer ejercicio con
regularidad, con muy pocas
excepciones. Incluso los pacientes
que padecen artritis pueden
mejorar la circulación al caminar,
correr despacio o hacer otro
ejercicio adecuado para la edad.
Antes de comenzar cualquier
programa de ejercicios, debe
consultar con su médico de cabecera.
Esto es especialmente
importante si usted tiene dolor
en las articulaciones, ya que su
médico de cabecera puede recomendar
un régimen apropiado
para usted.
El ejercicio aumenta la circulación
de la sangre a las articulaciones,
lo que resulta en mejor
movilidad articular. El ejercicio
también fortalece los músculos
alrededor de la articulación y
eso es bueno.
Yo he logrado entrenar y
correr un medio maratón, pero
tal vez eso no sea la mejor
meta para usted. Lo que trato
de hacer con mis pacientes es
ayudarles a establecer metas
de ejercicio. ¡Usted necesita
responsabilizarse de esto como
un programa médico que trabaja
para usted!
Debe tratar de ser lo más activo
que pueda.
Considere un régimen que
quizá incluya caminar, levantar
unas cuantas pesas, correr
o ejercicios acuáticos. Si
usted tiene artritis, el ejercicio
acuático es una de las mejores
actividades que puede hacer
para usted mismo porque su
cuerpo pesa menos en el agua,
lo que les quita el peso a las
articulaciones y alivia mucho
el dolor. Sin embargo, la resistencia
adicional al moverse en
el agua obliga a su cuerpo a usar
energía, ayudándole a quemar
calorías, mejorar el ritmo de su
corazón y fortalecer y darles
tono a los músculos.
No importa qué actividad
haga usted, el visualizar lo
que usted quiere hacer facilita
mucho más tomar el siguiente
paso de salir y hacerlo.
Pero si no ha hecho mucho
ejercicio antes, está BIEN que
empiece con pasos pequeños,
quizá cinco o diez minutos al
día. Haga eso durante dos semanas
y luego empiece a hacer más
a medida que sienta la sangre
circular y aumenta su energía.
Sé que no le estoy diciendo
nada que no ha escuchado antes;
a veces lo único que se necesita
es que alguien le anime un poco
y le explique las ventajas de

William W. Dodge, D.D.S.,
new dean of Dental School

William W. Dodge, D.D.S., has
been named dean of the Dental
School effective April 1, 2013.
The announcement was made by
President William L. Henrich,
M.D., MACP, of The University
of Texas Health Science Center
at San Antonio.
Dr. Dodge has been serving as
dean ad interim since June 2012
while former Dean Kenneth L.
Kalkwarf, D.D.S., M.S., served
as president ad interim during
Dr. Henrich’s medical leave. Dr.
Kalkwarf, who served as dental
dean for 24 years, is serving as
special assistant to the president
and plans to retire this summer.
“Dr. Dodge successfully led the
Health Science Center’s Dental
School as dean ad interim. Prior to
that, he served as vice dean of the
Dental School since 2004 and associate
dean for patient care from
1996 through 2003. He joined the
Health Science Center in 1978
after five years as a successful
general dentist in San Antonio
and two years as a captain in the
U.S. Army Dental Corps,” said
Dr. Henrich.
Dr. Dodge holds the rank of
professor with tenure in the Department
of Comprehensive Dentistry.
He received his Bachelor
of Science in Biology at Trinity
University in San Antonio and
his Doctorate of Dental Surgery
at the University of Southern
California in Los Angeles. He
and his wife, Jill, have two sons,
Rhett and Ryan.
“Dr. Dodge is highly regarded
by his colleagues in academic
dentistry throughout the nation
for his expertise in matters
of accreditation of dental programs,
competency assessment,
evidence-based clinical education
and financing of dental education.
Dr. Dodge’s goal, shared by me
and the faculty, is that the school
be regarded as the finest dental
school in our country.”
“His leadership and vision,
most notably regarding the
school’s clinical endeavors,
helped the Dental School to be
awarded Permanent University
Funding to build a state-of-theart
Center for Oral Health Care
& Research which will open next
to the Medical Arts & Research
Center (MARC) in 2015. I have
complete confidence that Dr.
Dodge will lead the school in an
exemplary manner in the years to
come,” Dr. Henrich added.
The Center for Oral Health
Care & Research is the future of
oral health care education, training
and patient care for the Dental
School. The $95 million facility
will feature 198,000 square feet
and house all clinical training and
patient care. The building will
facilitate clinical research trials
which can generate advancements
in innovation and patient care.
The Dental Dean Search Committee,
which was led by Eileen
Breslin, Ph.D., RN, dean of the
School of Nursing, identified
many outstanding candidates
for this role before selecting Dr.
Dodge as the Dental School’s
fifth dean.
Komen funded early trials of Lymphoseek approved

Leaders of Susan G. Komen for the
Cure, the world’s largest breast cancer
research organization, applauded the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s
(FDA) approval of a new diagnostic
tool, called Lymphoseek, that can
more accurately determine whether
breast cancer has spread to lymph
nodes, helping to avoid overtreatment
of women and men with the disease.
“The ability to more accurately track
cancer’s spread will help doctors treat
breast cancer more effectively, without
the likelihood of removing unaffected
lymph nodes,” said Chandini Portteus,
vice president of Research, Evaluation
and Scientific Programs for Komen.
“This will help to ensure that women
and men with breast cancer are getting
the right treatment for their disease, as
early as possible. We are very pleased
to have played an early role in the
development of this tool.”
Komen funded a 1999, $231,000
grant to Dr. Anne Wallace of the
University of California, San Diego,
for a Phase I clinical trial that tested
the safety of Lymphoseek. The FDA’s
approval of Lymphoseek means that
this new diagnostic tool can replace the
standard blue dye used today, which
can miss up to 25 percent of cancer
cell-containing lymph nodes.
Lymphoseek contains a radioactive
molecule that is targeted specifically
to lymph nodes. When injected, it allows
doctors to visualize and identify
the lymph nodes that have the highest
probability of harboring cancer. The
procedure is used to determine if
cancer has spread beyond the primary
tumor and aids in the staging process.
Accurate staging of cancer is critical,
as it guides therapy decisions and
determines patient prognosis and risk
of recurrence.
Komen currently is funding more
than $300 million in research grants

Just a Thought: encounter with
President Reagan
In 1981 I was privileged to serve
as the president of the San Antonio
Junior Chamber of Commerce
commonly referred to as the San
Antonio Jaycees. Our chapter at the
time was the fourth largest chapter in
the United States. Some years later
it became the largest in the country.
The SA Jaycees was a nonprofit
organization that sponsored events
such as the Orphan’s Shopping Tour
at Christmas to get them clothes etc.
for the holidays. For many years the
chapter also sponsored a Fiesta event
call La Semana Alegre that brought
in big name entertainers. Monies
raised were used for children and
those in need during the year.
That year as president was an exciting
year to say the least. It was the
year I spoke at the first Martin Luther
King Jr. celebration in front of his
statue on New Braunfels Avenue. I
wrote about it last week.
It was also the year our chapter
hosted the National Jaycee Convention
that attracted over 10,000
delegates from all 50 states to the
Alamo City. It was a madhouse I can
tell you. Our master of ceremonies
for that convention was the dramatic
actor Kevin McCarthy.
We also hosted comedian and
actor Danny Thomas who not only
had a weekly syndicated comedy
show on TV called, “Make Room
for Daddy,” but he was instrumental
in fundraising for St. Jude’s Children’s
Hospital by hosting a national
telethon. He served as the hospital’s
national spokesman for many years.
Our keynote speaker was none
other than President Ronald Reagan!
It was his first major speech after
the John Hinckley assassination
attempt on his life. Needless to say
San Antonio was excited to host the
President. When he spoke for nearly
40 minutes he received nearly 20
ovations. The Convention Center
was rocking!
Just before he crossed the stage
to the podium to a thunderous roar,
I was privileged to be interviewed
by News 4 WOAI which at the time
was still called KMOL. I was maybe
10 to 15 feet away from the stage
when I was interviewed. Although
my interview was cut short as he
strode to the podium, I was allowed
to stand where I was interviewed
and I was given a copy of his speech
which I followed along as he addressed
the ecstatic crowd. When he

looked at me, he nodded and began
his speech. I was overwhelmed to be
standing that close to the president.
Like all presidents, he read off
a teleprompter. I held the copy of
his speech in my hand. As I meticulously
followed his speaking
with the printed word in front of
me, at one point he went off script.
I looked up startled and held my
index finger at the point where he
stopped and began to ad lib for the
next five minutes.
He shared humorous anecdotes
and other stories. Much to my surprise
when he finished his off the
cuff remarks, he transitioned back
to his teleprompter and continued
on as if it had all been scripted! He
was impressive.
As a former Judge I proudly displayed
President Reagan’s portrait
in my courtroom alongside President
Barack Obama. It was a day I
won’t forget.
As always, what I write is just a
thought.

son tantos los pendientes que
tenemos en la cabeza, que ni
siquiera vivimos el día al máximo,
como merecemos hacerlo.
Digamos que todos los humanos
tenemos responsabilidades.
Tenemos que alimentarnos, bañarnos,
limpiar nuestro hogar,
trabajar, cuidar de aquellos que
queremos, estudiar, y muchas
otras responsabilidades.
No por esas obligaciones
significa que tenemos que dejar
nuestro día, pues de alguna
manera creo que las cosas se
pueden organizar y disfrutar,
llevando una vida balanceada.
Es el balance lo que crea una
necesidad de querer un poco de
todo, y ese mismo balance es el
que nos permite tener un poco
de todo eso que queremos.
Si nos dedicáramos a organizar
nuestro tiempo, serían
menos las veces que llegaríamos
tarde al trabajo o a los
eventos familiares, y serían
muchas más las veces que
disfrutaríamos tiempo libre
para nosotros y para estar con
quienes queremos.
Se han de preguntar: ¿Cómo
puedo tener más tiempo libre?
¡Lo he intentado y a lo máximo
que llego es a un domingo en
pijamas sin nada que hacer!
Yo creo que todos queremos
tener vacaciones y al mismo
tiempo cumplir con cada una
de nuestras obligaciones, pero

Free home weatherization program returns

Lack of attic and wall insulation,
weather stripping, and
energy-saving lights can all
contribute to loss of energy in a
home. CPS Energy’s Casa Verde
program enables low-income
families to reduce their energy
bills by making their home more
energy efficient. Residents interested
in the program are encouraged
to apply at the District 5
Home Improvement Event on
Saturday, March 16 from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The event will take
place at the Workforce Center
for Excellence on St. Philip’s
College Southwest Campus at
203 Norton Street.
Since the return of Casa Verde
last fall, the program has provided
more than $3 million
dollars in home weatherization
improvements to roughly 1,000
customers throughout CPS Energy’s
service area.
“When the nights are chilly I
can notice that the added attic
insulation has made a difference
in my home;, we do not feel the
usual drafts flowing through the
house,” says Casa Verde recipient
Elizabeth Bredvad. “I do not
know if I could ever afford it, but
the program improved the quality
of life in my home.”
Funding for Casa Verde is
provided by CPS Energy’s Save
for Tomorrow Energy Plan
(STEP) in an effort to reduce
energy demand. Weatherization
improvements include attic
insulation, wall insulation,
weather-stripping, replacement
of incandescent light bulbs, solar
screens and duct seals. Eligible
customers who apply this week
and are approved will likely receive
improvements before the
hot weather of late spring arrives.
The program is available to
qualifying low-income CPS
Energy customers in Atascosa,
Bexar, Bandera, Comal, Kendall,
Medina and Wilson counties.
Home owners and renters must
meet specific program guidelines,
which include a questionnaire
on income for all members
of the household and a home
evaluation.
Anyone unable to attend the
March 16 event can speak to a
Casa Verde representative at the

Legislation to help the beverage
industry
For this week’s insights into
the Texas Legislature, I want
to discuss a topic of the utmost
seriousness: Drinking beer. And
whiskey…and tequila.
Perhaps you might expect
something more weighty, such
as education or the budget. Well,
rest assured, I’m hard at work on
those most important issues.
But actually, I consider beer
and distilled spirits to be pretty
serious subjects, too, because if
a package of bills related to the
beverages industry makes its way
through the Legislature and into
law, it will bring good jobs and
business opportunities to Texas.
In recent years, I heard complaints
that certain regulations
put in place shortly after Prohibition
ended no longer made sense
in our modern times. While these
laws may have been necessary in
the 1930s to prohibit monopolies
and mob influence, today they
are seen as inhibiting business
expansion and putting Texas
companies at a competitive
disadvantage with out-of-state
brewers and distillers. However,
several attempts to change these
laws in previous legislative
sessions failed because of disagreements
between different
segments of the industry.
So, about a year ago, I began
a series of stakeholder meetings
that brought these different
factions together. Producers,
distributors, and retailers did
exactly what we should do in a
democracy: They identified their
differences, figured out what
they could agree on, and looked
for solutions.
The end result has been a series
of bills that I helped author.

With regards to beer, Senate
Bills 515-518 would:
• Help production brewers
(such as San Antonio’s Ranger
Creek or Alamo Beer Company)
to sell a small amount of their
product on the premises of their
brewery
• Allow brewpubs (retailers
that brew their own, often restaurants,
such as San Antonio’s
Blue Star Brewing or Freetail
Brewing) to sell their products
off-premises
• Allow brewers under a certain
size to self-distribute.
These bills still keep our
“three-tier” system in place
(which requires separation between
producers, distributors,
and retailers) while acknowledging
that the beer industry
has changed in recent years and
that we must allow these small
brewers to expand. Maybe some
small Texas brewer will become
the next craft beer success story,
like Boston’s Samuel Adams
Brewing did!
This package of bills just
passed the Senate Business &
Commerce Committee. Hopefully,
it will eventually make its
way through the Senate, House,
and to the Governor’s desk.
I’m also trying to help other
artisans that have recently sprung
up in Texas: makers of quality
distilled spirits (San Antonio
examples include Ranger
Creek again, which also makes
whiskey, and Rebecca Creek
Distillery).
Much like the beer bills, my
SB 905 would allow distillers to
get their product directly into the
hands of consumers. If passed,
distillers could sell a limited

bottle or two of their product for
visitors to take home, much like
wineries may do now.
Two of my other bills, SB
642 and 652, would more easily
allow bulk sales of distillers’
products.
SB 642 would allow food producers
— such as, say, a barbecue
sauce maker that wants to use
whiskey in the sauce — to buy
in bulk directly from an in-state
distiller. Currently, they must
buy from a retailer, an arrangement
that is expensive to the
food producer and has cost our
in-state distillers some lucrative
contracts. Hey, why shouldn’t
a Texas barbecue sauce contain
all Texas ingredients, instead of
being forced to use whiskey from
Kentucky or Tennessee?
Similarly, SB 652 would allow
Texas distillers to sell in bulk
to one another instead of being
forced to buy from out-of-state.
The bill also allows a distiller to
buy directly from a brewer —
this would save money for Texas
distillers, such as those who may
want to buy Texas beer to use in
the production of their whiskies.
Both SB 642 and 652 passed
the Senate on Wednesday, and
now head to the House.
When you look at it that way,
you can see this is actually quite
a serious topic. These bills are
about more than a drinking
a beverage — they’re about
growing Texas businesses, putting
people to work, and buying
Texan!

Appreciating American politics
At a moment when competing
budget plans and debates
over gun control legislation
consistently remind the US
public of the difficulties that
the Democratic and Republican
parties sometimes have in
finding common ground, it is
worth appreciating some of the
positive aspects of the country’s
political system. For this
purpose, reflecting on Italy’s
recent parliamentary election
is valuable.
Three facts should be noted
firsthand. First, Italy has had
literally dozens of governments
since the Second World
War, whereas the United States
has only had 13 presidents
(including FDR who died before
the war’s end) during the
same period. Second, Italy’s
political spectrum is a hodgepodge
of center-right, fascist,
avowed communist, populist,
leftist, and even regional parties.
Needless to say, the range
of ideologies represented in the
US Congress is much narrower
and legislators must manifest
their diverse beliefs within
one of only two parties. Conversely,
there are currently 14
parties represented in the 630
member Chamber of Deputies
and a similar number are in the
319 member Senate of Italy’s
parliament.
Third, Italians have a much
higher level of political participation.
The turnout last month
was the lowest in a legislative
election since World War II,
but it was still about 75%.
Conversely, US presidential
elections rarely garner close
to 60%.
Some readers may be familiar
with political satirist Steven
Colbert’s attempts to become
a viable presidential contender,
either as a Democrat or an
Independent. While he never
succeeded, Colbert’s Italian
counterpart has. About onefourth
of Italian voters just cast
their ballots for a new party, the
Five Star Movement (M5S),
created by a comedian named
Beppe Grillo. His strident
anti-establishment criticisms
proved effective with a public
disgruntled with austerity and
disillusioned with their political
officials. Though the M5S
came in third place behind two
broad coalitions, some opine
that it will be the kingmaker
in selecting the new prime
minister. In the alternative,
new elections must be held if
no party can garner enough
support from smaller parties to
obtain a majority of seats and
form a new government. That
is no easy task and requires
multi-partisanship on a scale
rarely seen in the United States.
Such complexity and uncertainty
highlights some of
the perhaps-underappreciated

advantages of the presidential,
relative-majority system of the
United States. While it may be
less dynamic and the positions
of certain legislators are sometimes
boringly predictable, this
gives a political stability to the
world’s largest economy, which
investors cherish and Italy’s
system often lacks. The fact
that the stock market dipped
significantly after Italy’s election
on February 25th is a testament
to this fact.
The complex rules for apportioning
seats to parties in the
proportional representation system
are beyond the scope of this
article, but what is noteworthy
is the uncertainty and need for
political accommodation (critics
would call it horse-trading)
amongst various parties is a
feature that the United States
need not worry about. Gridlock
could always be much, much
worse.
Thus, though it helps to look
in the mirror from time to time
in order to objectively evaluate
the faults of one’s country,
looking abroad for some instructive
comparisons is also
worthwhile. While complaints
about a lack of bipartisanship
will continue, as will the needless
disparagement of party
“moderates” as part of demands
for ideological purity, there is
still plenty to like about American
government.
Cruz offers amendment
to defund Obamacare

floor speech, offering his amendment
that defunds Obamacare in
the Continuing Resolution, the
“Restore Growth First” amendment.
He was earlier joined at a
press conference by Sens. Mike
Lee (R-UT), Jim Inhofe (R-OK)
and Rand Paul (R-KY) to discuss
the importance of passing this
legislation.
“Economic growth should
be our first priority and if we
implement Obamacare now, it is
certain to be destructive to economic
growth,” Sen. Cruz said.
“We have already seen more and
more small businesses reducing
jobs, dropping healthcare coverage
or forcing employees to work
fewer hours in order to avoid the
burdens and costs of Obamacare.
Every elected official should be
united in preventing a policy
which will lead to further job
losses and make it more difficult
for young people, Hispanics,
African Americans, single moms
and others who are struggling.
To implement Obamacare now,
when the economy has flat lined,
has potential to do enormous
harm and enormous damage to
the economy.”

“Nancy Pelosi famously said
we needed to pass Obamacare
to see what was in it,” Sen. Lee

not still support this complex,
expensive, and damaging law.”
President Obama promised
American families they would
pay $2,500 less for their insurance
premiums by the end of
his first term. Today, the average
premium has increased
$3,000—a $5,500 swing between
what was promised versus what
has happened.
Additionally, only 2 percent of
the health plans currently available
to consumers in the private
market offer the coverage needed
to satisfy mandatory government
requirements, according to
HealthPocket Inc., a technology
firm that compares and ranks
health plans. Obamacare also
includes more than 20 tax increases
that the Joint Committee
on Taxation estimates will raise
$1 trillion in taxes over the next
decade.

State archives unveils rediscovered
papers from Republic of Texas History

The Texas State Archives has
unveiled a new exhibit featuring
rediscovered papers of the Republic
of Texas Legation to the United
States. This is a unique collection
of documents that captures the
pressing diplomatic activities of the
short-lived Republic as it grappled
with boundary issues, relations with
Mexico, and the strenuous path to
statehood in Washington, D.C.
Part of the Archives and Information
Services Division of the
Texas State Library and Archives
Commission (TSLAC), the State
Archives presents this exhibit in
the lobby of the Lorenzo de Zavala
Building, 1201 Brazos St., Austin.
The public may view the exhibit in
person, for free, at any time during
the lobby’s operating hours, Monday
to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The public may also view part of
the exhibit’s contents online at http://

As an independent nation from
1836 to 1846, the Republic of Texas
sent diplomatic representatives
to form a legation or diplomatic
mission in Washington, D.C. The
legation wrestled with many issues,
among them annexation, Native
American raids, and how to finance
the government of a new nation.
After Texas was annexed by the
U.S. in December 1845, the legation
office closed. Sam Houston, U.S.
Senator from Texas, retained the
papers instead of conveying them
to the Texas Secretary of State in
Austin, and they were passed down
to his descendants.
In 1973 Houston’s descendants
donated to TSLAC the portion of
the legation papers dated from 1839
to 1845. For decades these were the
only known records of the Texas
legation. The earlier records dating
from 1836 to 1839 remained unaccounted
for until 2004, when they
were offered for auction. TSLAC
and the Office of the Texas Attorney
General claimed these documents as
official state records on behalf of the
people of Texas.
Following a temporary arrangement
in which the rediscovered
legation papers were housed and
displayed at Texas Christian University
in Fort Worth for five years, the
documents entered the permanent
collection of the State Archives in
Austin in December 2012.
Today the State Archives’ exhibit
in the Lorenzo de Zavala Building
lobby paints a detailed, diplomatic
picture of a struggling new nation.
Highlights include an 1836 letter
from Stephen F. Austin (Republic
of Texas Secretary of State) to the
Texas ambassador in D.C., stating
that Mexican General Santa Anna
has left for D.C.

of State to Anson Jones notifies
the Republic of Texas President
that the U.S. received notification
that Texas withdrew its proposition
to be annexed by the U.S.
In a letter dated March 1, 1838,
Samuel F. B. Morse offers the Republic
of Texas the exclusive use of
the telegraph he invented.
Other documents deal with a variety
of topics, including boundary
issues, Native American raids, and
the Texas Navy.
The Republic of Texas Legation
Papers will remain on exhibit until
August 30, 2013.

St. Philip’s College recognized statewide

The Alamo Colleges’ District
Support Operations (DSO) and St.
Philip’s College have been recognized
at the Achievement Level for
the Texas Award for Performance
Excellence by the Quality Texas
Foundation. They are two of only
nine organizations in Texas to earn
this recognition. The honorees
were singled out for demonstrating
strong dedication to quality and
high performance, evidenced by
well-deployed, effective, systematic
approaches to organizational management,
with good performance
levels and trends evaluated against
industry standards.
The Quality Texas Foundation
cited a number of best practices that
qualified the Alamo Colleges DOS
for this recognition. In particular,
they felt that the systematic process
for strategic planning was one of the
Alamo Colleges’ foremost areas of
strength. St. Philip’s received special
recognition for their accomplishments
in leadership, planning and
student focus.
Patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige
National Quality Award criteria
and process, the Texas Award for
Performance Excellence is an annual
recognition of Texas organizations
that have achieved performance
excellence and applied outstanding
quality principles in their day-today
operations. The award will be
presented to the Alamo Colleges and
St. Philip’s College in June during
the Texas award ceremony.
“I am so proud of the accomplishments
of all employees engaged in
building cycles of improvement into
our key processes and initiatives,”
said Alamo Colleges’ Chancellor
Dr. Bruce Leslie. “This recognition
is an important step in our journey
to become the best in the nation in
student success and performance
excellence. A special thanks goes to
our Board of Trustees for leading the
way,” he added.
The Alamo Colleges’ DSO and
all five colleges are actively engaged
in the Texas Award for Performance
Excellence (TAPE) program and
Northwest Vista College which received
the TAPE Award in 2007, is
the only educational institution in the
nation to receive a national Baldrige
assessment this year and received
two commendations for leadership
and customer service.

NFL “tuck rule” no more?
The NFL’s competition committee
submitted a proposal to the NFL this
week to do away with the infamous
“tuck rule.” The rule was born after
the New England Patriots playoff win
over the Oakland Raiders in 2002.
Under the proposed rule change, a
quarterback who loses control of
the football when bringing it back to
his body after a pump fake will be
deemed to have fumbled. Under the
current rule, such a play would result
in an incompletion.
The San Antonio Scorpions are not wasting time making moves
before the start of the season and signed Bryan Jordan on Monday
and announced the hiring of Preston Petrias on Tuesday.

As the San Antonio Scorpions
FC prepare for their second season
in the North American Soccer
League (NASL) they continue to
add pieces to recapture last season’s
success.
The latest addition on the player
side is Bryan Jordan. The multiposition
talent appeared in 56
games for the Los Angeles Galaxy
of Major League Soccer (MLS)
over the past four seasons.
His offense skill set will boost the
Scorpions goal count and replace
Pablo Campos’ production from
a year ago.
The 27-year-old can play the
winger, fullback and forward positions
and played his collegiate
soccer at Oregon State University.
At Oregon State he got his first
taste of pro action with the San Fernando
Valley Quakes of the USL
Premier Development League before
being selected by the Portland
Timbers of the USL First Division
League prior to the 2007 season.
The following spring, the 5-foot,
8-inch Jordan signed with the Los
Angeles Galaxy and made his MLS
debut May 10, 2008.
"We're very happy and excited
to have Bryan on board," said Head
Coach Tim Hankinson. "He's
had over 50 games with MLS'
Galaxy. He's one of our quickest
and speediest players who'll be able
to fill in at the right-back and the
right-midfield and even as a second
forward."
The Scorpions home opener
is April 13 vs. the Tampa Bay
Rowdies.
Front office addition
The Scorpions named San Antonio
native, Preston Petri as the Director
of Media Relations and Social
Media for the club on Tuesday,
according to President and General
Manager Howard Cornfield.
The Central Catholic High
School grad will take over all media
relations involving the organization,
as well as the dissemination of all
Scorpions public information. He
replaced Bob McCullough who
held the position on an interim basis
since the inception of the franchise.
Petris resume is quite decorated
considering his age. He comes to
the Scorpions after serving as a
Basketball Communications Intern
with the New Orleans Hornets in the
National Basketball Association.
Prior to the Hornets, Petri spent time
as a Media Relations Intern with the
New York Yankees and Houston
Astros in Major League Baseball.
"I couldn't be more excited to join
the impressive front office that the
Scorpions have put together," said
Petri. "It is a dream come true to
work for my hometown team, and
I can't wait to get started."
Smith a stud at pro day
Potential first round pick in the
2013 NFL draft, Geno Smith, completed
60-of-64 throws at his prod
day on the campus of West Virginia
Thursday. He had two passes
dropped and he overthrew two
receivers. Smith is considered to be
one of the top quarterbacks available
in April's NFL draft. He threw for
4,205 yards and led the nation with
42 touchdown passes in 2012.
U.S. soccer drops to 33rd
The United States has fallen one
spot to No. 33 in FIFA's rankings
while world and European champion
Spain remains No. 1. The drop by
U.S. on Thursday comes despite not
playing in a quiet month for international
soccer. Spain is followed by
Germany, Argentina, England and
Italy. Colombia is sixth, with Portugal
dropping to seventh.

Free-agency winners a myth in NFL

European champion Chelsea was
paired with Russian side Rubin
Kazan in the draw for the Europa
League quarterfinals on Friday as
the three English qualifiers were kept
apart. Chelsea was drawn against
eastern European opposition for the
third straight round, having already
knocked out Sparta Prague and
Steaua Bucharest since dropping into
the competition following its elimination
from the Champions League.
The first legs will be played April 4
with the return legs set for April 11.

Every year, about this time,
my people start passing judgment.
There is nothing we the
media love more than declaring
winners and losers of NFL free
agency.
Signing a couple of players,
even JAGs (which is a Bill
Parcells-ism for Just A Guy) at
insane price points, guarantees
a spot among winners. And my
FOX friends dutifully listed
Kansas City and Cleveland
among their admittedly early
free agency “winners” using
said criteria while Baltimore
registered among the Day 1
losers.
I say this respectfully: This
is all kinds of wrong.
Judging a team by their
amount of action on the first
day of the NFL league year is
kind of like judging porn on
its dialogue. You are missing
the point. Free agency is the
landscape of the truly damned;
the stomping grounds of the
desperate. The teams throwing
money at age-inappropriate,
salary-cap casualty, castoffs do
so not because results from this
endeavor have been positive.
They do so because they have
no other options.
The best teams are built in
April, in the draft, with young
talent being paid for potential
rather than rewarding age
for past performance. March
is when money is thrown at
problems, when Benjamins are
plugged recklessly into holes. It
is like the end of an NFL game,
when a losing team trailing by
a couple of touchdowns, starts
blitzing inappropriately. It
might lead to a few big plays.
It is not to be confused with
defensive competence.
And so it is with the busy in
free agency.
This seems obvious, especially
in light of what happened
with the Eagles a couple of
years ago. They “won” free
agency. They have won little
else since. All that remains is
the wreckage — a coach fired,
their prized free-agent signee

Baseball League en un
partido celebrado el domingo 17
de marzo en el diamante Colt 45.
En el Colt 45 tuvieron de rival
a The Wolfpack que por segunda
temporada consecutiva se quedaron
cortos en la pizarra ante el
mismo rival.
Por Wolfpack comenzó el partido
Ricky Mendoza, quien en el primer
episodio concedió cuadrangular conectado
por el campo corto Arnold
Ponce, quien se llevó por delante a
un compañero.
En el mismo episodio, cerrando,
The Wolfpack empató la pizarra
2-2, lo que hizo tambalear el pitcheo
del estelar abridor Josh Arriaga,
quien posteriormente se fajó ante
la serpentina de Mendoza que
tuvo que dejar el montículo tras
aceptar 15 carreras.
Con gran ventaja en la pizarra,
el manager interino Javier García
– quien suplió al timonel Gilbert
Rodríguez con sus coaches Gustavo
Torres y Manuel Rodríguez
– lograron salir airosos al final

Atlético Toros, el equipo
más antiguo en S.A.

Con cerca de cuatro décadas
en el balompié regional independiente,
el plantel Atlético Toros
es el de más antigüedad en San
Antonio. Atlético Toros fue “sucursal”
en segunda división del
club Atlético Español, fundado
en el año 1975 por Juan García
y sus hermanos Antonio, Toribio
“Toro”, Alfredo y su primo Felipe
Reyes.
Fue en el año 1977 cuando, por
tener bastantes jugadores directivos
del Atlético Español, decidieron
que se formara el Atlético
Toro, que pasó a ser dirigido por
el jugador Pablo Atilano, quien
desde entonces no ha cedido
en la dirección guiándolos a la
conquista de diez campeonatos.
Atilano ha contado con la
asistencia del señor Humberto
Reyes, quien en el año 2008
decidió tomar otro rumbo para
ser el entrenador del equipo
Atlético Toros en la categoría de
Veteranos en Liga Ejecutiva de
San Antonio, donde actualmente
están activos compitiendo.
“Atlético Toros siempre ha
sido el equipo a vencer. Se han
conquistado diez campeonatos
y nos hemos quedado con varios
subcampeonatos, todo gracias
al apoyo de nuestros jugadores
y seguidores que nos han brindado
todo su respaldo. Para mí
el fútbol es lo máximo, es mi
hobby y deporte preferido. No
descansaré hasta ganar el título
en Liga Ejecutiva en la categoría
de ascenso”, dijo Atilano.
Ambos equipos han participado
en torneos estatales y al sur
del Río Bravo destacándose los
jugadores José Barbosa, Pablo
Atilano, Esteban Puga (gran portero
y dirigente), Gabriel Osorio
“El Ruso”, los hermanos Ayala,
Máximo Saavedra “El Chimo”,
el valioso portero Luis López,
quien tiene 25 años sin cambiar
equipo.
Atlético Toros fue monarca
en las ligas independientes Liga
Latina, Liga Hispano SA, y en
circuito nocturno presidido por

Asimismo, logró traerse trofeos

to 12 pm at Brook City Park

age of 3 years old to 10 years
old. We are also looking for
parents volunteers to help out
with teams.
Our mission at MCYSO
has the exclusive purpose to
provide the opportunity for all
who wish to participate in youth
soccer activities. MCYSO shall
teach good sportsmanship,
educate youth participants and
adult sponsors in the fundamentals
of the game of soccer, as
well to promote the importance
of this worldwide popular sport.
MCYSO also will promote
the game of soccer through
sponsorship or regularly
scheduled competition, and
conduct other educational
activities as shall be deemed
appropriate for the promotion
of youth soccer. To

I say this not to be a contrarian
but few NFL teams have had
better offseasons than Baltimore.
This is exactly how the best
teams operate. They sign the
best quarterback possible and
they plug in people around him,
younger and ostensibly cheaper
players with upward mobility
found in April in the draft. It is
not nearly as sexy as the breathy
first couple of days of free
agency, but the mining of the
fourth and fifth rounds is where
the best teams excel. It allows
teams like the Ravens to build
a base where a smart free-agent
signing or trade transforms a
team from contender to Super
Bowl winner.
I just do not buy into this
idea that the Ravens got worse
because an aging Ray Lewis and
his diminishing skill retired, or
because they did not throw crazy
money at players to keep the
band together, or because they
did not bring in Daniel. This is
not to say the Chiefs and Browns
screwed up in free agency. They
already were screwed up. They
knew it. It is why they fired
people and hired new ones. It is
why they are looking for Band-
Aids in free agency.
It is the stomping grounds of
the truly damned and there are
no winners here.

City Year spends Spring
Break with students

City Year is a nonprofit organization
that brings young people
from all walks of life together for
a year of full-time work to mentor
younger students in school and
inspire them to graduate and go
farther. The program has been in
San Antonio for 17 years.
They work at 12 different
schools across San Antonio
School District (SAISD), North
East School District (NEISD) and
Kipp Aspire Academy. As per
tradition of City Year, they have
an annual Spring Break camp to
help at-risk students. This year,
the camp has students from Twain
Middle School, Rhodes Middle
School, and Kipp Aspire; three
of the poorest schools in the city.
The camp includes tutoring,
a chance to catch up on missed
schoolwork, and focuses on math
and ELA (English Language
Arts). There are also plenty of
leadership skills activities, which
have really paid off.
Walk into Kipp Aspire Academy
in these next few days, and
you’ll see over 70 students enthusiastically
doing schoolwork,
playing team games, and helping
each other out. It would be hard
to believe that only a couple of
days ago, these kids couldn’t even
tolerate the sight of each other.
“The first day was really difficult,
because of differences in
the schools. Students from Twain
and Rhodes kept scuffling. It
hasn’t been long, and I see a big
difference in them. Students are
more confident and leading new
kids around the camp.” Rosario
Urrabazo, Corps Member at City
Year said.
“I’m having a lot of fun. I’ve
learned a lot of reading and math,
and some other things. Stuff that
wasn’t making sense at school,
like fractions. But, I know how to
do them now!” Robert Enriquez,
an 8th grader at Twain Middle
school said.

Adiós Google Reader

It’s official – Google Reader’s
run is done.
Earlier this week, Google announced
the demise of the Google
Reader app. They will be shutting
it down on July 1.
The app has a devoted has a
devoted following who use it religiously
to keep up and manage
their social and network media.
“It’s how I use the internet,”
local filmmaker Chris Haley said.
On the official Google blog,
a spokesperson explained there
are two simple reasons for killing
the app: usage of Google Reader
has declined and Google decided
to focus their energy into fewer
products.
“We think that kind of focus
will make for a better user experience,”
Google said.
So they allowed a three-month
sunset period to give users time
to find an alternative feed-reading
solution. And as a consolation,
there is a way to retain all the
Reader data, including subscriptions
through Google Takeout.
But don’t despair – Digg plans
to come up with an alternative by
the second half of the year.
Tight after Google’s announcement,
Digg said they hope to
identify and rebuild the best of
Google Reader’s features (including
its API), but also advance
them to fit the Internet of 2013,
where networks and communities
like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr,
Reddit and Hacker News offer

que elabora la hoja de
ruta de la anunciada reforma
migratoria en EE.UU. estudia
reducir el número de visados
de reagrupación familiar
para conceder más permisos
de residencia a trabajadores
con alta cualificación, según
informó el diario The Washington
Post.
La medida forma parte de
las que actualmente baraja el
comité bipartito formado por
ocho senadores que tiene la
misión de encontrar puntos
de acuerdo entre republicanos
y demócratas que permitan
sacar adelante en el Congreso
una versión actualizada de las
leyes migratorias.
Según ese diario, los
demócratas estarían dispuestos
a hacer concesiones a los
republicanos y eliminar la posibilidad
de que tanto adultos
con niños como hermanos de
ciudadanos estadounidenses
puedan solicitar permiso de
residencia en el país por motivos
familiares.
A cambio, los demócratas
quieren conseguir la aceptación
republicana para establecer
un camino hacia la
residencia permanente y ciudadanía
de los 11 millones de
inmigrantes indocumentados.
Dos tercios de los visados
de inmigrantes que se tramitan
anualmente en EE.UU. son por
apego familiar, una categoría
que seguiría siendo aplicable
para la pareja del ciudadano,
sus hijos menores de edad, y
para los hijos mayores de edad
que estén solteros.
La disminución de visados
familiares permitiría destinar
en torno a 90,000 permisos

De pronto siento que la sangre
golpea mi cabeza. La indignación
desplaza mis sentimientos más
nobles, dando paso a la ira y a los
deseos de venganza, hasta ahora

‘El Zorro’, doy un salto y caigo
sobre mi caballo, sintiendo el

En estos recuerdos de su vida
artística, Jorge Porcel, en su autobiografía
titulada Risas, aplausos
y lágrimas, insinúa que el estilo
de vida que adoptó al comenzar
su carrera como humorista argentino
contribuyó en gran parte
a empeorar su estado físico y, por
consiguiente, a que se le conociera
en el mundo del espectáculo como
el Gordo Porcel.
Es que la vida bohemia a la
que se refiere, por tratarse de un
género de vida irregular y desordenado,
si bien cobra tal fama,
tarde o temprano la paga muy
caro. De ahí que diga el refrán:
“Quien siembra abrojos, no ande
descalzo”.
Gracias a Dios, durante los
últimos años de su vida, Porcel
cambió su manera de vivir y acató
aquel refrán, aplicándolo a la inversa:
“No dejó de andar descalzo,
pero sí dejó de sembrar abrojos”.
Y para completar, comenzó a
practicar el refrán positivo que
dice: “Quien bien siembra, bien
cosecha”. Porque, como dice San
Pablo, “el que siembra para agradar
a su naturaleza pecaminosa, de
esa misma naturaleza cosechará
destrucción”; pero “el que siembra
para agradar al Espíritu, del

Throughout their careers, Christian
ministers will be called upon
to attend to the sick, following in
the footsteps of Christ, but behavioral
disorders can be among the
most tragic of illnesses, crippling
not just the mind and body but
the soul.
Within the Christian tradition,
then, I would argue that behavioral
health providers and ministers
share a common vocation, to
become doctors of the soul. While
the physician relies on medicine
and counseling, and the minister
on prayer and charity, the healing
process would not be complete
without the skills of both practitioners
being applied ultimately to
rescuing the fallen soul.
I turn to Mathew’s Gospel for
authority on the subject of Christ
as doctor of the soul, because
there we come upon the crucial
verse, “They that be whole need
not a physician, but they that are
sick,” and we may assume that
the sickness at issue endangers
the soul as much as the body,
because in a related verse, Christ
says, “And fear not them which
kill the body, but are not able to
kill the soul: but rather fear him
which is able to destroy both soul
and body in hell.”
In my considerable experience
as a psychiatrist, I have come to
the conclusion that beyond the
biological, environmental, and
genetic factors contributing to
behavioral disorders, there is a
spiritual dimension at the core of
these illnesses that must be addressed
in a manner appropriate
to the cultural and ideological
background of the afflicted.
Latino communities in the
Americas share in a rich cultural
matrix that includes elements of
Mesoamerican, Jewish, Islamic,
and Christian civilizations, as well
as displaying substantial traces of
Asia and Africa.
Perhaps due to our unique history,
a strong tendency toward
religious mysticism has always
manifested itself in Latino communities,
whereby physical and
behavioral disorders, regardless
of their organic origins, are often
experienced and understood as
spiritual imbalances.
The medicine that the Spaniards
brought with them to the Americas,
inherited from the Greeks and
Romans, equated good health with
a delicate balance of biological,
natural and cosmological elements.
Though purporting to be
scientific, their medicine was actually
more fantastical than empirical,
more mystical than physical.
The same may be said of Spanish
religion, a brand of Roman
Catholicism that, despite the aggressive
orthodoxy of the Inquisition,
proved skillful at adapting
itself to the highly mystical trends
of Mesoamerican worship.
As a consequence, the
practice of behavioral health or
Christian ministry in Latino communities
throughout the Americas
requires a special openness of
mind and heart to phenomenon
of mysticism, whereby the soul
takes precedent over the mind
and body.
Our ancestors are never far
from us. Some of us pray to them
for guidance and relief in times
of struggle. While we fear death,
paradoxically, our souls long to
join our ancestors in paradise.
Even so, it is commonly held
that not all the spirits of the dead
have found a resting place. Many
continue to wander the globe,
aimlessly.
Our folk traditions attribute
many illnesses and maladies of
the living (especially behavioral
disorders such as depression and
anxiety) to the influence of lost
spirits, the spirits of the damned,
or, in the most extreme scenarios,
to demonic possession.

se celebró el 25º aniversario de
la Fundación Silver & Black
Give Back através del banquete
anual denominado Tux ‘N Ten-
nies.
Anteriormente, dicha fundación
se conocía con el nombre
de The Spurs Foundation.
Este evento, copatrocinado
por la cadena de supermercados
H-E-B y la empresa financiera
SWBC, fue organizado por
primera vez en el AT&T Center
donde directivos de Spurs
Sports & Entertainment están
celebrando los cuarenta años de
los San Antonio Spurs, que bajo
la presidencia del magnate Peter
M. Holt ha logrado la conquista
de cuatro sortijas de campeón
de la NBA.
Spurs Sports & Entertainment
es propietaria de los equipos

En la arena multiusos del AT&T Center Emma Muñoz, cantante
de ocho años de edad, interpretó con éxito el Himno Nacional
durante el partido Spurs vs. Pistons. Su educada vocalización
en el canto a la patria le mereció emotiva ovación por parte de
espectadores, jugadores y directivos de ambos equipos.
En el evento anual Spurs-USAA Military Appreciation Night voluntarios y empleados de la empresa

Events by Maria and Arugula
Catering by Chuck Hernandez can
make any event a memorable one.
Arugula Catering has been in
existence since 1984. It started in
Phoenix, AZ., but transferred to
Austin and San Antonio years later.
“I’m from Austin and I love San
Antonio, that’s the reason why I
work here,” said Chuck.
Maria, owner of Majestic
Events, is an expert event planner
who has passion and talent to help

She began as an employee for

and after being laid off she contemplated

she decided to start her own company

“I never say no to someone

know and I try to work with what
they have.”

other for a long time. However
they work separately, but if Maria
needs a good cater, she always
trusts Chuck, and if Chuck needs
an event planner, he always uses
and recommends Maria.
“I love working with Maria
because she is great at planning
events. Maria has given me the
opportunity to grow in this matter.
We both support each other all the
time,” said Chuck.
These two great companies came
to La Prensa to show how they can
do their job at any event in the area.
There isn’t enough room to tell
how delicious and healthy the food
was. As a team they put everything
on display in a very attractive and
presentable manner.
From empanadas, pork and
chicken al adobo, to guacamole,
salads and salsas, everything was
tasteful with a Latin twist.
“Maybe people don’t think
this is Latin food, because they
consider other common things as
Latin,” said Chuck. “This is Latin
because in a healthy way, it has
many ingredients that can hardly
be found.”

Desde hace mucho tiempo me
habían comentado que Demo’s
Greek Food era uno de los restaurantes
de comida griega y mediterránea
más ricos de San Antonio.
Tuve la oportunidad de visitar el
local ubicado en el 7115 Blanco
Rd., y mi experiencia no fue del
todo grata.
Yo soy amante de la comida
mediterránea, y por lo tanto se
incluye la comida de países como
Líbano, Grecia, Israel y Turquía,
entre otros.
En estos países se consume
mucho el aceite de oliva, el hummus,
el cordero, los mariscos, el
jocoque, vinagre, trigo, y se acompañan
de vino.
Los gyros son una especia de
burritos/tortas pero con pan de
pita. Son deliciosos pero si se saben
hacer bien, al estilo tradicional de
Grecia, y aunque el de Demo’s
sí tenía muy buen sabor, hubo un
detalle que no me permitió disfrutarlo
tanto.
Como ya mencioné, el aceite de
oliva es básico en muchos de los
platillos, sin embargo el gyro que

probé en Demo’s estaba totalmente
bañado en aceite, y el cordero
era grasoso y contenía cebolla en
exceso.
El sabor de la carne era bueno, y
el sabor del pan también, por lo que
quizá fue mi mala suerte el haber
recibido un platillo que me dejó
todo el día con el estómago molesto
y sin ganas de comer otra cosa.
Otro detalle fue que al entrar
al local me esperaba algo muy
distinto, pues el mesero estaba
comiendo y se tuvo que parar a
atenderme, tuve que preguntarle
detalles para que me dijera cuál
era el mejor platillo, y después de
haberme atendido se volvió a sentar
a comer.
El gyro de Demo’s puede servirse
con pollo, carne de puerco o
carne de cordero, y contiene una
orden de papas a la francesa que, al
parecer le dan el toque americano,
y se acompaña con una rica mayonesa
sin picante.
El lugar es apto para toda la
familia y si usted está interesado
en comer allí le recomiendo que lo
haga a la hora de comida (hora de
lunch), o durante el fin de semana,
ya que el lugar es casual.

domingos de 11 a.m. a 9 p.m., y los
viernes y sábados de 11 a.m. a 10

Güero Polkas: The man
that shaped Tejano

This weekend, KEDA radio
station is celebrating its 47th anniversary.
The event promises to
be a blast, featuring tejano and
conjunto superstars such as Eddie
Lalo Torres, Flaco Jimenez
and La Tropa F. Not many know
however, the driving force that
gave these musicians the chance
to shine and become what they
are now, or the racist history that
goes behind it.
Meet Ricky “Güero Polkas”
Davila. He and his father Manuel
Davila were the guys who made
KEDA, the first Tejano music
station and shaped what Tejano
is regarded as today.
Back in the day, there was no
promotion in San Antonio for any
Mexican or African American artists.
Artists such as James Brown,
Aretha Franklin, Little Joe and
Sonny and the Sunglos weren’t
featured on any stations because
of their race.
“There was a lot of racism back
in those days. Even if we played
Spanish music, there was a law
that 10 percent of that music had
to be in English. It didn’t matter

if a black guy made a song. The
stations would only play a cover
after a white artist did it.” Güero
said. “Contrary to what everyone
says, Latinos are and never have
been a minority. We are the majority,
but the gabachos wouldn’t
let us think that.”
The Davila’s created such a
sensation with their brash disregard
for racism, which forced
other radio stations to play what
they were.
Very popular tejano and conjunto
stars, such as Jay Perez,
David Lee Garza, Ram Herrera,
and Tropa F sang their first at
KEDA. They only got the chance
because of Güero, and many artists
give him that credit, including
California group Los Lobos,
and Mexican groups Cadetes de
Linares, Ramon Ayala and Hurricanes
Del Norte. Not only was
KEDA a help to artist, but the
community as well. Anyone was
allowed air time for public service
events.
“We liked to serve the community.
We were the only radio
station that did that. If someone
had to bury a loved one and was
selling plates to earn the funds,
we’d let them announce it on the
air. We wanted to help people.”
Güero said. “I live by what my
father would say: Give everyone
a chance.”
Unfortunately, Güero passed
over the reins to the Jalepeño
station in 2011. Corpus Christibased
Claro Communications
bought it out. The loss was tremendous
in the community. To
this day, Güero has no regrets.
“I did what I could to help
people, and promote good music.
We fought for the Raza, and look
where we are now.”

Utilísima estará iniciando su
nuevo programa “Motochefs”, en
donde se podrá disfrutar de una
aventura en motocicleta al lado
de los reconocidos chefs Aarón
Sánchez y Aquiles Chávez.
“Decidimos Aarón y yo hacer
un viaje y recorrer Texas y
parte de México en motocicleta
para crear un programa lleno de
aventuras y todo por el gusto de
comer y probar nuevos lugares”,
explicó Aquiles durante la entrevista.
Aarón es originario de El Paso,
TX, frontera con Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua.,
y su gusto por la cocina
comenzó por su abuelita y su
madre, quien es una reconocida
chef en México. Actualmente
reside en Brooklyn, Nueva York.
Por su parte, Aquiles reside en
Houston con su familia, pero
creció en Tabasco, México.

“Holy Ghost People” dances
with faith and snakes

When first going through the
list of films that were going to be
playing at SXSW, “Holy Ghost
People” immediately caught my
attention from the title alone.
After watching a short trailer to
see what it was about I made it a
personal mission to see this film
and was not disappointed with
the result.
The story follows Charlotte
(Emma Greenwell) as she attempts
to find her missing sister.
She gets help from an ex solider
named Wayne (Brendan McCarthy)
to find her sister that she
believes disappeared into Sugar
Mountain (a religious sect in
Appalachia filled with snake
handling religious fanatics) led by
Brother Billy (Joe Egender). Once
they arrive at Sugar Mountain
they are entered into an upside
down world that challenges their
faith as well as puts their very
survival in question.
The entire cast does a remarkable
job at bringing the audience
into this strange world that at
times feels like arriving on another
planet.
Charlotte and Wayne are introduced
into a very unfamiliar part
of the American landscape and
help ease the audience in along
side them.

faith to the test while holding
poisonous snakes overhead (one
snake named after the devil himself)
and preaching the gospel.
“Going into making this film I
had two fears…one was snakes
and the other was singing in front
of people,” Egender admits.
The soft-spoken actor transcended
those fears and manages
to play a very memorable
antagonist.
Director Mitchell Altieri (“The
Violent Kind” and “The Hamiltons”)
brings the audience into
unfamiliar territory while building
tension like a tight rope slowly
being wound.
Altieri is mostly known for his
previously released horror movies,
and that background adds to
the overall atmosphere in “Holy
Ghost People.”
The grainy, raw tone of the film
fits perfectly with the landscape
that Altieri creates.
“Holy Ghost People” worked
on each level that it aims for. It
gives a very real look into a sect
of radical zealots that at times
has the feeling of a documentary.
It tests the faith of all characters
involved while unraveling that
mystery of a young girls disappearance.
“Holy Ghost People” ended up
being one of my favorite movies
premiering at SXSW this year.
The small imperfections in the
film are things that could easily
be ironed out; for the most part
they add more to the feel of the
film itself.
Tweeting is all the rage at SXSW 2013

American Airlines, one of the
sponsors of South by Southwest
(SXSW), has a Twitter wall on
the main floor of the Austin
Convention Center – displaying
people’s tweets about where
they are, what they are doing
or recommending some
event. Trends emerge as the
tweets tell everyone to go to
this location to hear some
musician – or to hurry and to
get a glimpse of a celebrity at
a red carpet.
Even Oreo had a booth set up
in the convention center that
awarded prizes for taking a
photo at their video wall and
tweeting at hash tag “oreograbandgo.”
At the Austin airport, a purple
banner from Clear Channel Outdoors
(CCO) welcoming SXSW
arrivals encouraged them to tweet
for a chance to win two tickets to
the 2013 iHeartRadio Festival.
According to a press release,
CCO reached more than 25,000
technologists, media professionals
and social influencers at the
2013 SXSW Festival and invited
them to share their unique festival
experiences as part of its latest
social media contest.
The CCO contest goes on until
the very end of Sunday – or
technically the first seconds of
Monday, March 18 at 12:01 a.m.

The Wonderland of Americas, a mall for all

Oscar Montemayor recalls fond
memories of the former Crossroads
Mall and is excited now that
he is the leasing director of the
now Wonderland of the Americas.
When Montemayor returned
to San Antonio the Wonderland
was owned by local investors who
wanted to revive the mall and to
make it into a local attraction,
again. Oscar wanted to participate
in helping the renovation of
the Wonderland of the Americas
to make it a vibrant destination
where families can entertain
themselves.
The Creative Civilization organization
decided to use the
Wonderland name rather than the
Crossroads Mall name. The name
Crossroads Mall was changed
since that name felt old and because
the new owners wanted to
make something new with the
building, they went ahead with a
new name.
Montemayor mentioned that
the day they had a news briefing
is the day they decided to the
change the Wonderland name.
The founder and owner of La
Prensa newspaper, Tino Duran,
was very happy about the name
Wonderland.
“So much of the press that
people received was that we never
stopped calling it Wonderland,
so it was really good for us to
rebrand in a positive method
because of the memories we
had. Now it’s on us to make new
memories for the new generation
to come,” Montemayor went on
to say.
Although not many people are
certain as to what happened to
Crossroads Mall, Montemayor
mentioned that one of the conclusions
that they had come up with
was the fact that the people of
San Antonio had grown bored of
traditional shopping. Therefore,
he decided to listen more to the
families and to the neighbors
of this community as to what
products and services had special
meaning, and that’s what he
wanted to fulfill.
“Yes we’re going to listen to
our tenants and yes we are especially
listen to our families as
to what they need products and
services,” Montemayor added.
At this point the owners of
Wonderland of the Americas
came up with an idea to have
different types of businesses
at the Wonderland. The local
businesses located at Wonderland
of the Americas have so
much variety from Career Point
College, Creepy Classics, CD
Sam, Goomba’s Pizza, N-V-U’s
Fashion Boutique, Damian the
Gunsmith, etc.
Victoria Hernandez, director
of Marketing at Wonderland also
has some amazing free events to
brighten and renew the shopping
center. Such as a free jazz concert
series that will be hosted this summer.
In addition, Wonderland also
has the Friday night live events.
“The concept was to mirror the
jazz fest and have good quality
entertainment where people can
come over and be able to listen
to music and have some food and
fun in a relaxing atmosphere,”
Hernandez said. “This year we’re
doing things different, we’re doing
it bigger and better and the first one
we’re going to have is on April 5
and we’re going to have a country
night out where Joe Diffie is going
to be opening as a featured act.”
Other events are also going to be
held there such as their Salute to
America: a signature event where
they give back to the community
as a charity that is connected to the
military. And for this they’re going
to have WAR as their opening act
with the San Antonio Symphonic
Band. In addition, jazz fest is going
to celebrate a 20th annual event.
In the fall, Wonderland of the
Americas will have a classic rock
event coming to the Wonderland.
Hernandez also mentioned local
bands are invited to perform at
the Wonderland Mall and if you
have a band feel free to come on
over for exposure. And they are
free to perform anywhere in the
mall, also, with concerts they have
a producer Dave Munoz with Q
101.9 to promote the events.
Montemayor, Hernandez and
all of the employees and tenants
of Wonderland of the Americas
have a common goal, which is to
bring the community together and
make their mall San Antonio’s
backyard party. Recently they had
a free petting zoo; the only thing
that was cost was the $1 photo fee
with the ponies.
Other events also include free
movie night: every Thursday for
the first 200 guests. Furthermore,
some of the upcoming events
include the Thingamajigy Fayre:
a Victorian steampunk event, Scifest:
for the sci-fi fans, Monstercon
2013: for your zombies and ghouls
and many more.
Getting there isn’t difficult if
you don’t have a car. The new VIA
Primo buses drop you off in front
of the mall.
So Wonderland of the Americas
still has lots to show and there is
more to come.

‘Digital killed the hard copy star’

It seems like each day we move
further and further away from tangible
and concrete media to digital
formats and platforms, particularly
movies. It’s a sad time for movie
buffs like myself and for others it
is (and will be) the only thing they
ever know.
I remember going to the video
store back in Houston with friends
on a Friday night to scour the
shelves for VHS tapes. It was
something we looked forward to
every weekend and could only hope
that we got away with trying to rent
rated R flicks. We would spend an
hour, sometimes two looking for
a movie that we could watch over
and over before we had to go back
to school on Monday. When we
found the perfect movie, the madness
would begin—reenactments,
memorizing lines, dressing up like
our favorite characters—because
the actors would be part of our crew
for the weekend.
A lot has changed since then,
starting with the fact I don’t dress
up like Corey Haim anymore pretending
to be Sam from the “The
Lost Boys” or want to be Eddie
Murphy’s character Axel Foley
from “Beverly Hills Cop.” Aside
from me the entire film industry
has changed and the way movies
are distributed.
Live-streaming websites, the
ability to rent a movie from a box
on the street corner and movie
pirating are all contributors to the
fact tangible movies are becoming
harder and harder to find. This is
a scary thought because even if
you do buy a digital copy it could
disappear at any moment from your
computer or tablet. As in the case
of George Orwell’s book “1984”
that was released for Kindle users
in 2009.
In his book government censors
erase all traces of news articles
embarrassing to Big Brother by
sending them down an incineration
chute called the “memory hole.”
And coincidentally it was similar
to what happened to Kindle users
who purchased the book digitally
after a dispute over the rights to
publish the book digitally.
In a matter of hours “1984”
vanished from the Kindles owned
by those who purchased it and there
was nothing they could do about it.
It is crazy to think that something
you paid for and expect to be yours
forever is taken so effortlessly.
This is something we could face
the rest of our lives once printed
copies of books, music or movies
disappear. For now, nostalgia is the
only thing that seems to be keeping
those hard copy formats around.
When it does finally disappear at
least I can still dress up like Corey
Haim and pretend I’m a star.

This is one to keep an eye out
for – those in San Antonio will
likely be able to catch this important
film at the San Antonio
Film Festival which takes place
June 19 to June 23.

At first I was skeptical because
the four ladies lack the Hollywood
resume that would make

lovechild is sketchy. However,
forget about all that and the actors
previous roles. Let yourself engage
with the characters because
the performances are brilliant.
Be prepared for Hudgens and
Benson to rock your world and
bare it all and to have a new found
respect for Franco and his depth
as an actor.
Do not think “Spring Breakers”
is an all-out comedy you will be
sadly mistaken and miss out on
Korine’s greatness as writer and
director. In addition, it is the best
edited film in years—hands down
the best.

Ayotte’s take on on “Sound City”:
Documentaries are at the top of
my list when it comes to favorite
film genres, so I’m partial to films
like Dave Grohl’s (Foo Fighters)
“Sound City.” My bias aside, this
film is awesome. Any music lover,
historian, fan of Dave Grohl, your
mom, your dad will all love this
film. It journeys into a small part
of music history that spans from
the early 70s rock invasion to the
90s grunge era.
The actual Sound City is a music
studio in Van Nuys, Cali. which
has produced countless platinum
Covo’s take on “Evil Dead”:
Another standout from SXSW,
“Evil Dead” is a remake of a
1981 cult film by the same name
– with a slight twist and about
the same amount of blood and
gore. Even if you like horror just
a little bit, or if you are just on
the fence – consider this movie
a must-see.
It’s also writer and director
Fede Alvarez’s directorial debut
– and his efforts here should
catapult his career into the stratosphere.

the acts mentioned above recorded
their mega-hit albums. In 1970 the
Neve board cost $76,000. To put in

California cost $38,000. Regardless
is not just horror, guts and gore,
it is funny and absolutely the
kind of flick you think of when
imagining Saturday afternoon at
the cinema with all the fun the
image conjures up.
Believe it or not, “Evil Dead”
is great fun.
So be prepared to be scared,
startled, shocked – and ready
to laugh out loud. Actually the
most shocking thing is that the
film’s producers managed to
pull off an MPAA rating of “R”
with the buckets of blood and the
number of limbs bouncing about
of the price tag the Neve paid off
tenfold until 2011.The Neve was
great but the fact it recorded on tape
and not digitally was its downfall.
So, all good stories must come
to an end, but this is where Grohl
comes in and saves the day. This is
a spoiler alert, but Grohl buys the
legendary soundboard and transports
to his own Studio 606 where
it will live on forever. The Neve is a
piece of music history that belongs
in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and
thankfully Grohl saved it from an
unknown fate.

Another amazing feature of
this film is that it uses little CGI
– much of the effects are done the
old-fashioned way, which takes
a lot more time and money, but
from the viewer’s perspective (at
least this viewer) it was cash well
spent. And it just the second film
ever to be filmed in 4K – “The
Hobbit” was the first.

vine a vivir a San Antonio
hace unos dos meses, y desde
que llegué no hago otra cosa
que llorar y pensar en casa.
Me paso las noches llorando
porque extraño a mi familia, y
mis horas de trabajo las siento
muy largas porque no me gusta
lo que hago.
La razón por la que me vine
a San Antonio fue principalmente
porque encontré trabajo
aquí, pero al mismo tiempo
yo lo busqué porque quería
salirme de casa. Cuando estaba
en casa me pasaba el tiempo
peleando con mis papás, con
mis hermanos, y lo único que
quería hacer esa estar con mis
amigas. Cuando me gradué de
universidad decidí venirme
y ahora resulta que me encuentro
peor que como estaba
antes. Además de que no me
gusta mi trabajo, la gente que
he conocido no me cae bien y
tiene un ambiente muy distinto
al que yo llevaba. Pienso que
también tiene que ver con el
hecho de que en El Paso yo
era muy solicitada y siempre
tenía a dos o tres atrás de mí,
y desde que me vine no he recibido
atención de nadie, pues
cada uno de los que conozco
anda en sus cosas y en sus

idea y de nadie más venirte a
vivir a San Antonio. Tú buscaste
trabajo en esta ciudad y lo conseguiste,

tenías una expectativa muy distinta
de esta ciudad, pues quizá
venías con la mentalidad de salir
de fiesta y conseguir galán.
La mala noticia de tu situación
es que si no cambias tu actitud,
no vas a ser feliz ni aquí, ni en
El Paso, ni en cualquier ciudad

La actitud y la manera de ver
la vida son dos factores importantes
para poder salir adelante
y para lograr llevar a cabo todos
tus planes sin que se interponga

La buena noticia es que no es
un problema tan grave, pues esos
detalles se pueden cambiar con la
ayuda de uno mismo. Solo tienes
que tener ganas de querer hacerlo
y mucha fuerza de voluntad.
Por otro lado, también está la
buena noticia de que nadie te
detiene a quedarte en San Antonio,
pues tú puedes irte cuando
quieras sin ningún problema,
la clave está aquí en tomar la
decisión correcta, centrarte un
poco más en tus decisiones y
recordar que si lo que te molesta
no puedes cambiarlo, entonces si
