City Year spends Spring
Break with students

City Year is a nonprofit organization
that brings young people
from all walks of life together for
a year of full-time work to mentor
younger students in school and
inspire them to graduate and go
farther. The program has been in
San Antonio for 17 years.
They work at 12 different
schools across San Antonio
School District (SAISD), North
East School District (NEISD) and
Kipp Aspire Academy. As per
tradition of City Year, they have
an annual Spring Break camp to
help at-risk students. This year,
the camp has students from Twain
Middle School, Rhodes Middle
School, and Kipp Aspire; three
of the poorest schools in the city.
The camp includes tutoring,
a chance to catch up on missed
schoolwork, and focuses on math
and ELA (English Language
Arts). There are also plenty of
leadership skills activities, which
have really paid off.
Walk into Kipp Aspire Academy
in these next few days, and
you’ll see over 70 students enthusiastically
doing schoolwork,
playing team games, and helping
each other out. It would be hard
to believe that only a couple of
days ago, these kids couldn’t even
tolerate the sight of each other.
“The first day was really difficult,
because of differences in
the schools. Students from Twain
and Rhodes kept scuffling. It
hasn’t been long, and I see a big
difference in them. Students are
more confident and leading new
kids around the camp.” Rosario
Urrabazo, Corps Member at City
Year said.
“I’m having a lot of fun. I’ve
learned a lot of reading and math,
and some other things. Stuff that
wasn’t making sense at school,
like fractions. But, I know how to
do them now!” Robert Enriquez,
an 8th grader at Twain Middle
school said.
NSHMBA launches "Job Offer Guarantee" program

Earlier this week, the National
Society of Hispanic
MBAs (NSHMBA) announced
an innovative program for its
members: the NSHMBA "Job
Offer Guarantee."
The Job Offer Guarantee
program is just part of this
year’s NSHMBA's Annual
Conference & Career Expo
which will take place right here
in San Antonio from October
10 to 12. The theme for this
year's conference is "Deep in
the Heart of Opportunities"
and the Job Offer Guarantee
program was designed
to increase opportunities for
Hispanics to advance in their
careers.
"We're always searching
for ways to add value to our
members, and we've decided
to leverage our entire platform
of value-added products and
services to facilitate new job
and career advancement opportunities
for them through this
innovative offering," NSHM-
BA's CEO, Manny Gonzalez
said. "Through this Job Offer
Guarantee program, we hope
to connect our members with
employers seeking to hire top
diverse MBA-level talent, and
if we can't do this, we'll give
them a 100% refund!"
According to the press release,
applicants must purchase
a Job Offer Guarantee
conference registration, meet
certain eligibility criteria and
perform certain required tasks
in order to qualify for the
program.
Basically, after participating
in the program, NSHMBA
guarantees you will have a job
offer within 12 months.
For those seeking a position
out of grad school – or a chance
build on an established career,
this could be a great opportunity.
Applicants will be required
to attend networking events at
their local NSHMBA chapter,
participate in NSHMBA's Career
Management Center and
online webinars and upload
their resumes to NSHMBA's
NektPro.com job site, where
they will be able to apply

available with top employers.
Participants will also receive
one-on-one coaching to ace
job interviews, assistance with
"elevator pitch" preparation
and two special private access
opportunities to meet with hiring

Adiós Google Reader

It’s official – Google Reader’s
run is done.
Earlier this week, Google announced
the demise of the Google
Reader app. They will be shutting
it down on July 1.
The app has a devoted has a
devoted following who use it religiously
to keep up and manage
their social and network media.
“It’s how I use the internet,”
local filmmaker Chris Haley said.
On the official Google blog,
a spokesperson explained there
are two simple reasons for killing
the app: usage of Google Reader
has declined and Google decided
to focus their energy into fewer
products.
“We think that kind of focus
will make for a better user experience,”
Google said.
So they allowed a three-month
sunset period to give users time
to find an alternative feed-reading
solution. And as a consolation,
there is a way to retain all the
Reader data, including subscriptions
through Google Takeout.
But don’t despair – Digg plans
to come up with an alternative by
the second half of the year.
Tight after Google’s announcement,
Digg said they hope to
identify and rebuild the best of
Google Reader’s features (including
its API), but also advance
them to fit the Internet of 2013,
where networks and communities
like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr,
Reddit and Hacker News offer
powerful but often overwhelming
signals as to what’s interesting.
They even ask for your input.

Grupo de senadores estudia recortes a
visados de reagrupación familiar
(EFE).- El grupo de senadores
que elabora la hoja de
ruta de la anunciada reforma
migratoria en EE.UU. estudia
reducir el número de visados
de reagrupación familiar
para conceder más permisos
de residencia a trabajadores
con alta cualificación, según
informó el diario The Washington
Post.
La medida forma parte de
las que actualmente baraja el
comité bipartito formado por
ocho senadores que tiene la
misión de encontrar puntos
de acuerdo entre republicanos
y demócratas que permitan
sacar adelante en el Congreso
una versión actualizada de las
leyes migratorias.
Según ese diario, los
demócratas estarían dispuestos
a hacer concesiones a los
republicanos y eliminar la posibilidad
de que tanto adultos
con niños como hermanos de
ciudadanos estadounidenses
puedan solicitar permiso de
residencia en el país por motivos
familiares.
A cambio, los demócratas
quieren conseguir la aceptación
republicana para establecer
un camino hacia la
residencia permanente y ciudadanía
de los 11 millones de
inmigrantes indocumentados.
Dos tercios de los visados
de inmigrantes que se tramitan
anualmente en EE.UU. son por
apego familiar, una categoría
que seguiría siendo aplicable
para la pareja del ciudadano,
sus hijos menores de edad, y
para los hijos mayores de edad
que estén solteros.
La disminución de visados
familiares permitiría destinar
en torno a 90,000 permisos
de residencia a trabajadores
extranjeros con alto nivel de
formación.
El líder del grupo bipartito, el
senador republicano Lindsey O.
Graham, insistió en que se va a
"cambiar fundamentalmente el
sistema migratorio".
"Ahora mismo consiguen tarjetas
verdes hasta los abuelos",
dijo Graham que aclaró que su
intención "es reservar 'green
cards' en función de las necesidades
económicas del país, y
haremos algo para las familias.
Pero el objetivo para mí es
reemplazar la migración en
cadena por un sistema migratorio
basado en la economía",
declaró.
Entre las mejoras de las que se
podrían favorecer los familiares
de ciudadanos que soliciten el
permiso de residencia en EE.UU.
estaría el aumento del porcentaje
de visados que se tramitan cada
año por país, que pasaría de un
7 a un 15 por ciento.
El programa de visados familiares
tiene una lista de
espera de 4,3 millones de personas.
En el caso de Filipinas, por
ejemplo, la demora en la tramitación
dado el elevado número
de solicitudes alcanza las dos
décadas, más que ningún otro
país.
Los senadores están valorando
igualmente facilitar a
residentes permanentes en
EE.UU. que no sean ciudadanos
el proceso para pedir la "green
card" para sus parejas e hijos.
