Table 5.5 shows the percentages of indirect energy use for the six households in our study. As can be seen, food accounts for between 32 and 52 % of the total but a third is most normal. Recreation is another large contributor, with between 16-17 % of the total for the two average households and 26 % for the Urban rich household. Household Squeezed with children use 15 % of the indirect energy for hygiene as opposed to the other households where hygiene contributed to less than 10%. The absolute figures for indirect energy use of the average household in Stockholm City are presented in Table 5.6. The total use per year is 141 GJ 5 . This figure can be compared to the direct energy use that was just below 100 GJ for this household type. As with expenditures, the most important category for indirect energy is food with 46 GJ followed by recreation with 25 GJ per year. The energy intensity for both food and recreation is 10 MJ per Euro and this intensity is higher than for household effects, clothing and footwear, and transport. The total indirect energy use varies from 42 to 480 GJ per year, a difference of factor 10. The lowest value is for the household called Young and Poor and the highest is for the one called Urban and Rich, a pattern consistent with the one for direct energy use. Food accounts for as much as 176 GJ in the Urban and Rich household and, as discussed earlier, either they had a big party, stocked food or else the food was more expensive than we assumed, and the energy inputs are too high for this household. The average Stockholm City and Swedish households are quite similar with respect to indirect energy use for food (43-46 GJ), house (11-12 GJ), household effects (11-12 GJ) and hygiene (9 GJ), but differ in terms of indirect energy for clothing and footwear, and recreation where the Stockholm City households use more; 15 GJ as opposed to 11 GJ for clothing and 25 GJ as opposed to 21 GJ for recreation. The Swedish household uses more energy for transportation, 22 GJ compared with the Stockholm household that used 16 GJ a year. The different patterns reflect differences in lifestyles between the inner city and the rest of the country; in the inner city opportunities for shopping and recreation are plentiful and close-by, enabling people to spend money on such activities. 5 1 GJ = 1000 MJ 32
