ConnectPower - Switched-mode power supply
Switched-mode power supplies in the ConnectPower series
are suitable for universal use, thanks to the varying voltage
input range of 85 Vac to 265 Vac. The devices are interference-suppressed
to DIN EN 55022 Class B and also satisfy
the requirements for safety extra low voltages (SELV).
Weidmuller’s switched-mode power supplies produce 12 W to
300 W with electronic short-circuit control on the output side.
The mains adapters can be used for industrial applications
and in building automation.
Principal of operation
The outstanding features of primary switched-mode power
supplies include high degree of efficiency combined with compact
dimensions and moderate heat development. Mains voltage
is rectified directly. The rectified voltage is then chopped at
a higher frequency than the mains frequency. A transformer,
which can be of small dimensions due to the high switching
frequency, then transforms the voltage at the switching frequency
to the required value.
The voltage is then rectified and smoothed by a filter. Control
is achieved by pulse-width modulation: the switch-on and
switch-off times of the chopper-transformer are influenced in
such a way as to ensure that the output voltage remains stable.
Current division and redundancy
Weidmüller’s switched-mode power supplies can be connected
in parallel to increase power or for redundancy purposes.
There are two basic methods: active and passive current division.
Active current division requires higher switching complexity.
The advantage is exact current division and uniform load
on the modules. Passive current division means less complex
switching, lower costs, as well as a softer characteristic output
curve and less exact division of the current. The output voltages
of the units must be adjusted exactly (± 100-200 mV)
before being connected in parallel.
Power factor correction (PFC)
Power factor correction ensures with switched-mode power
supplies that there is a sinusoidal current input from the mains
supply. A side effect is the regulation of the power factor to
approximately 1.
