"It looks lovely," Jordan says. "It looks like an erotic ghost story, all set in and around war-time London, which was a bit like being in a cocoon. It was an era which broke down a huge number of barriers, and I think we've created a beautiful portrait of wartime." Jordan begins to describe the style of the film, much of which takes place during rain or at night, or both. But he then cuts himself off with the admission that he doesn't feel right touting his own work. The film employs many who have worked before with Jordan, 1993 Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay for "The Crying Game," the film which starred Rea as a man who discovers the woman he loves is a man. It's Jordan's tenth collaboration with producer WooUey, a relationship that goes back to his first film, "Angel," and includes his excursion into Hollywood-style production "Interview With a Vampire," his highly acclaimed "The Butcher Boy" and his recent trippy offering "In Dreams," made under their development deal with DreamWorks SKG. Roger Pratt, who worked with Jordan on "Mona Lisa," is director of photography. Anthony Pratt, who worked on "The Butcher Boy," is the production designer. Costumes are by Sandy Powell, who also worked on that film and four other Jordan movies (as well as earning an Oscar last year for "Shakespeare in Love"). Greene wrote the novel entirely from the point of view of Bendrix, whom he describes in his autobiography "Ways of Escape" as "a lover who was so afraid that love would end one day that he tried to hasten the end and get the pain over." Jordan's screenplay explores two views of the love story that hinges on a decision Sarah makes because of a promise to God, and Bendrix's misunderstanding of that decision. Having such an impediment keeping the lovers apart—an essential ingredient to any successful love story—appealed to " This film is of a piece mth everything Vve done, Ifs about something which seems to have surface explanation but which turns out to have a very dijferent one. It's about the struggle to understand life in its totality. We don't really have a clue,'' Jordan. "God is very handy, very handy. He creates a kind of barrier. He's a jealous antagonist. I think there is great irony in the fact that Bendrix thinks Sarah has another lover, but, when he discovers who it is she loves, it's someone who, as far he's concerned, doesn't exist." Although falling bombs move the action of the story, they are not its subject matter. "It's very beautiful to make a film that had no violence in it whatsoever and that is really about serious adult emotions, issues of tremendous depth," says Jordan. "So few an "This film is of a piece with everythin I've done. It's about something whici seems to have surface explanation bu which turns out to have a very different one, like in 'Crying Game' when he findl out the woman is a man. It's about th' struggle to understand life in its totalit} We don't really have a clue." Jordan, who used to write novels aiK thinks he'd like to take time soon to do S( again, was born in Sligo and prefers t( remain in Ireland where he has a home ii Dublin as well as the one in Cork. "It's fa more comfortable to be here, outside o the mainstream. You don't have the pres sure that Hollywood directors have—com: paring yourself with your peers, readini grosses, trying to find out what's happen ing in the business," says the filmmaker. H{ describes each movie he makes as a learn! ing process and stresses that the mos! important aspect in choosing subject mati ter is "to make a film you relate to in i deeply personal way—for any movie to b good it has to be that. "Movies are tremendously importan things," says Jordan, assuring us that hf has "a lot more films I want to make." Anc fish to catch. Hi "The End of the Affair."
